MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

Is it just me or every time Major Nelson feels disrespected, Microsoft make it worse for him by making it official.

I remember reading something on here a few months ago I think about how it got out that everyone at Microsoft kinda laughs at him behind his back,, would explain a lot huh

He has a point considering "Major" Nelson tried to shrug off the issues of real soldiers not being able to play xbone when it had the online DRM system.
I'm not sure how much real majors are concerned about their soldiers ability to play videogames.

"Gamers"? Most of those you quoted are in fact official acronyms (also, it's PSX and not "PS") with officially designed logos, it's not like Xbone or even X360/360.
Microsoft never cared for nicknames or acronyms for their products, besides afaik Win for "Windows" as in "Win95".
This is also the company that gave us WinCE.

Naming forethought may not be their strongsuit.

Oh look, just another thing to point out how little thinking they did in anticipation of this console launch.

They only got it after Larry commented feeling upset that people called it that.

Hopefully they're also scrambling to get it for social media usernames, too.

I don't care whether it's disrespectful.

Disrespectful is trying to sneak in extreme DRM and steal our ability to buy and sell games second hand. Disrespectful is telling us that if we happen to live or work outside the regions where MS deigns to activate games we should just buy a 360. Disrespectful is expecting everyone to forget these things ever happened when public opinion finally forces you to back down. Disrespectful is having PR goons come to feed us utter garbage about system specs and then have a huff when people call them on it.

If anything, the name isn't disrespectful enough.

Completely agree with this post, but I would like to add a thing:

It's also disrespectful to force Kinect onto us, in my opinion.

Actually bkilian who used to work there said MN is very respected and knows as much if not more about the XBO, the systems and is a "high level manager" on top of his customer relations

So does that make the use officially ok then? I mean, I never thought of it as being offensive since it just rolls off the tongue, but some people definitely get huffy about it.

I dunno, here's the post I was talking about: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=65284926&postcount=59

To let him take all the blame. CBOAT (I was wrong, not CBOAT, but some insider actually confirmed it) even said everyone laughs behind his back and thinks he is a clown at MS. It's pretty fucked up actually if this is true.

Just lol... they started it by calling it something so stupid in the first place. What do you expect people to do? Buying it out because they believe it's disrespectful is just pitiful and childish; someone who can't take a joke.

Their next option was XBOX 720, than everyone would make fun of it by pointing out how Killer Instinct can only do 720p!

Gosh. Well, if they didn't go with Xbox One... and Xbox 720 was a joke waiting to happen, too... why... they might have had to spend more than two and a half minutes thinking about it.

also it looks like they acquired the domain through some service called MarkMonitor https://www.markmonitor.com/

"An online brand protection strategy addresses these risks and combats the loss of revenue, brand reputation and consumer trust that occur when someone else exploits your brand for their own gain."

I think MS was doing good enough of a job losing their brand reputation and consumer trust on their own, not the guy registering Xbone.com before them.

They even admitted they thought of Xbox Infinity, but I'm sure that XFinity would of caused some crazy clashes with Comcast. But still, would of been a cooler name.

Actually I can't think of an abbreviation that reflects favorably on Xbox One.

Xbone = bone, buff said
xb1 = as in 3 less than ps4
XBO = extreme body odor
Xbox180 = half as good as 360, reminder of policy reversals

XboxO maybe? Xbox1? The only abbreviations that fit all sound bad. I wonder what the marketing people were thinking when they settled on the name.

Streisand effect at work, it seems.

Microsoft might try to be proactive, but the name will stick around. Don't lose your heads; Xbone sounds silly by itself, and it's just a petty thing if you think about it.

I bet they wanted you to call it "the one"

Almost anything would have been better than Xbox One. Typing that feels as extravagant as PlayStation 4. That said, if I was into the product, I'd embrace Xbone. Fans/astroturfers could have popped mighty Xboners for Titanfall; marketing could have run with a piratical skull and crossbones campaign, perhaps fighting goofy, subtly PS flavoured ninjas because people go mad for ancient memes...However you want to play it, it's much easier to spin Xbone into a positive nickname than to force people to call your product something 'respectful'. But I guess their focus is on spinning the specs at this point.

Ininity would've been such a better name

XBI
Infinity
XBin
etc.

I remember when Justin McElroy was tweeting fake reveals about "Xbox Horizon." Those were pretty funny, but I do think Horizon would be a better name. Just about ANY name that doesn't cause the same "Wii U" confusion would be nice.

The notion that I should give respect to a damn plastic box is laughable. Even more so when you consider what that plastic box represented policy wise just a few months ago. GTFO of here with that respect garbage, Nelson.

He was talking about respecting the people who put thousands of hours of work into it

Why would they laugh at him? They are just, if not more incompetent at pr than he is.

Although we all new Major Nelson worked for MS he had a cultivated image that he was just a guy who liked games and although he pushed products he was rarely front and center in the pr push.

This past E3 he was front and center and he failed miserably in that he came off as irritable and angry not to mention dishing really bad spin for terrible policies. His previous persona is now pretty much obliterated and now he just seems like a pr suit.

I don't know how MS tackles this because he had an ear to the ground community manager aspect but now doesn't. He is just mocked. Of course he is just a guy doing a job and doesn't deserve hate but this is kind of what you sign up for when you become a spin doctor.

Yeah being employed to defend untenable positions will do that to you.

Now Major Nelson is upset about gamers showing disrespect. The irony of it is insane. How do Msft keep finding new ways to look silly? Do they have a research department dedicated to this shit?

haha this is going to upset those few posters I've seen over the past few weeks who kept saying "if you use the term Xbone it obviously shows where your allegiance is, Sony fanboy."

I use Xbone or X180.

I don't even plan on getting either next gen system.

I don't even remember using the word ever (other than that very post I made ITT). I just say Xbox One or XBO or XB1.

Not that I think the term is disrespectful - it's just a clever abbreviation and doesn't really carry much negative connotation, as far as I'm concerned. It's something that happened pretty naturally almost immediately after the name was announced. I know people want to make it like "XBONED" or "XBOWNED" or something like that, but "XBOWNED" can actually be construed positively ;)

quite happy xbone is now official :)

This. Its not going anywhere, and will be used by fans and detractors alike.

Yep. I've mentioned it before but in no time at all 'Xbone' will become a term of endearment, particularly after launch and 2013 becomes just a rotten memory. The transition will be quicker and easier if Microsoft were to lean into a little.

That would've been fun too.

I remember a month or two ago some (I assume) child here was getting in a huff about people using XBOne, so he threatened to start calling the PS4 'PSDeath' instead. Many lolz were had at their expense.

You'd think that paystation would be the obvious moniker, especially after Sony put most multiplayer behind the paywall.

PSDeath? Meh...

I have one preordered, and I still call it Xbone. I don't consider it derogatory, just convenient shorthand that rolls off the tongue better than X1 or XB1.

Honestly, I think that Microsoft should just embrace it.
