Responses like this bother me as well. Poster One complains about something and another poster is responding by doing the exact same thing poster One complained about. It can be in good fun, but more often than not it's even worse than a drive-by post, because it attacks the emotions of poster One directly.
Also, it's neither witty nor terribly funny - even if used 'ironically'. Most threads that have complaints in the OP have at least half a dozen posters that respond this way.

Only pun-age is worse.

I actually agree with you, but in an arguably failed attempt to be funny, I was hoping that particular poster would follow through on the threat of ignoring everyone who does it, only to be met with the "You can't ignore Admins/Moderators" message*, and shake their fist angrily at the monitor. In general, I agree with your point, and wasn't just trying to be combative and snarky for the sake of it.

*Before I get carried away from a lofty perch of being immune from the ignore feature, I'm sure someone out there can show me what for by showing that they either already had me on ignore from before my getting moderator status, or that they have an extension that allows ignoring mods. If that's the case, then that too makes my silly post less funny.

Ah. Yeah, I just haven't seen it. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, though. I'm curious now. Got the links?

Sorry no links-it was relatively soon after I got approved, and the thread topic wasn't even that deep (I actually don't remember what it was), but I just remember the junior thing being thrown out as an easy attempt to discredit my opinion.

Maybe you could have beat me to it if you didn't write a novel just to explain a simple joke.

I thought I was the only one that hates "Am i the only one..." !!

I also hate the slightly weaker version "anyone else..."

Also, when people feel the need to point out that they've seen a video/picture/article previously.

"yeah, i saw that video 2 weeks ago, its really good." Just tell us what you think about it, goddamn.

You should get upset when someone is saying something with bad intent. You shouldn't really add bad intent because someone for some reason calls you "sweetie".
Who said anything about bad intent? Yes, I can get angry if I'm annoyed enough by phrases I don't like to be referred to by strangers if it's often enough.

I rarely smile out of amusement on the net, especially for jerk comments, but this one actually got a smirk out of me. I think it's because I'm as bad with brevity as he is, so it struck a chord with me.

It was brought up before, but the attitude among some members that all juniors are stupid is annoying. The only difference is that we've been members of GAF for a shorter amount of time and have made less posts.

Junior members are those who haven't yet made it through the probationary period. So the perception that they're worse posters than regular members is on average kind of accurate. Most of the dumb ones get culled before making it to full member.

That said, when people use junior status as a reason to dismiss someone's posts, it's still shitty and obnoxious, and potentially bannable.

Steve's response was just the easiest way to show what grinds my gears sometimes, as this thread is intended. I could have quoted someone from two pages ago, as it was used there as well. I well understood the point of his post, but the style remains the same.

Also, "deal with it"-type of posts bother me too. I guess I'll "cry about it" until I "grow the fuck up".

Thread titles that start with something like "Uh" or "Um" especially when ellipsis are included somewhere in the title really irritate me, probably more than they should.

Do we also hate avatar compliments?

This is my favorite. I need to get my kitty back out.

so cute.

the political correctness of GAF as a whole is starting to get really fucking annoying. Step out of line in any thread from the hive mind and be prepared to have them shit down your throats.

what ever happened to free speech ? instead of circle jerking each other to death and ejaculation ?

Now that this guy is banned, I wonder if he's raging at the ban screen and posting on Giant Bomb about how much GAF sucks and that it's a hivemind forum that wants to limit his free speech. I see that all the time on GB when I browse over there.

That's a forum habit that annoys me: people that think 'free speech' applies on a private forum, and that they can see whatever bullshit they want without repercussion.

Juniors, members, and mods regularly break TOS. Constantly, even. It's not really a big deal unless you're going overboard or doing it intentionally. I'm sure there are a few posts in this thread that are breaking TOS or at least skirting them. People calling out juniors is rarely about that and almost always just to either be a dick or think they're part of some kind of hazing ritual. It's bullshit all around. I see many, many threads where the juniors are by far the best posters and the actual members are spamming memes and blatantly trolling people.

It really sounds like you're making a harmless way for a stranger to be nice to you, into something it's not.

Defend it all you want as I can totally see where you're coming from, but I would definitely advice you to look at that situation as something much less complicated and mean.

I'm a 31 year old guy and I get referred to as hon, sweetheart, sugar, and all that by women older than me all the time, both by family and strangers. I take it as them being nice rather than condescending.

Same here. Had it happen with a female dentist, female dental assistant, several bartenders and servers, baristas, and one of the women who works at the gym I go to. It doesn't bother me at all, though I guess I can see how it can bother some people.

*shrugs* I don't know what to tell you, but from my experience I'm 100% certain if I were a boy he wouldn't have used those words.

Perhaps not. Perhaps he would say something like "man", "chief", "dude", "mate", "fella", "bro", "boss" or whatever. All things I've been called by other guys in similar situations. I haven't had a woman call me those things but also haven't had a guy call me the things that guy called you while women have.

Advise me for what situation? What did I view as mean? What am I making into what?

That hasn't been what I've observed, but I guess you could be right. I mostly only see junior mentioned in context like "Whoa, junior, you better watch it," or things along those lines. Personally, I send a PM to let them know about an unspoken rule, rather than putting it in the thread.

I've PM'd a junior to edit his post to take out the term "hivemind" since it's not in the TOS but is bannable (and--unlike the banned junior above--he wasn't using it entirely pejoratively, but rather as a shorthand for "Many people on GAF think...") He thanked me for letting him know, edited it, and survived. But I think other people have the same inclination to help, but they post their help in the thread, and then it can sometimes turn into a dogpile by accident, which can lead to a banning. So that might come across as members hazing juniors, but I don't think it's meant to be.

Anyway, I agree that sometimes juniors are the best posters. Some certain long-time, well-known members are absolutely terrible. And I'm not on here enough to say that my observations are more correct than yours.

I wish there were an elegant way for mods to let users know why another user was banned - without it turning into a public stoning. I've been a member here for years, and had no idea 'hivemind' was bannable.

I'm being a smartass now and I wish I knew how to find this thread via the forum, but I had to google it:

Banned Sites, Inappropriate Posts, and Memes

Innapropriate Posts & Banned Memes

- Thread Whining / Respect to Others. It's not that "Haters gonna hate" is a banned meme, it's that it's often used to be flippant and dismissive to other posters. If someone is trying to explain what they think about something, either treat them with respect or don't reply at all. So when you post "u mad", "deal with it", "haters gonna hate", "the GAF hivemind", "the usual suspects", "but GAF said x and now they're saying y!!!", "entitled whiners" or anything else that suggests that you don't care what other people think, you may be banned if it is taking away from discussion. This is getting to be a pretty big problem, and it's probably the single largest category of bans these days. If you don't want to discuss something, you don't need to post.

I have more:

1. The term dudebro is pretty obnoxious. Anytime someone uses it in a serious manner I just imagine some fedora wearing guy with cheeto stains all over their Khols Batman shirt and cargo shorts typing that out with a smug expression. Sorry to break it to some of you but people like popular things. It's okay to be critical but at least do it without coming off as a bullied recluse.

2. Misuse of spoiler tags is a freaking epidemic around here, especially on the gaming side. I can't tell you how many times I've highlighted one of these only to find
lol jk
or some shit like that. This has lead me to unconsciously clicking on ACTUAL spoilers which is frustrating.

3. Tag begging needs to stop. Don't crap up a thread asking for a tag or trying to post something edgy in an attempt to get noticed. Just behave normally and if you deserve one, it'll happen. I can only imagine how much sucking up/PMing moderators have to deal with in an attempt to get a small individualized blurb under their username.

4. Thread whining is being cracked down on (thankfully) but I still see it go unpunished here and there. Of course the moderators can't monitor every single thing posted but we have to do a better job as a community. Don't like a certain thread? Then don't post in it and it will automatically fall off the front page and fade into obscurity; bumping it with "this thread is dumb" type posts do more harm than good.

5. #teamwhatever in TV threads (I'm looking at you, Breaking Bad) is lame in my opinion. This isn't twitter or some tween twilight forum, take that shit elsewhere.

6. One word responses to posts in gaming gets me riled up, especially when the offender is clearly just responding to the thread title instead of contributing to the conversation.

7. Rushing to make a joke as the first response to a new thread. 9 times out of 10 it isn't funny, stop it.

I dunno about posting but one thing that actually bothers me is certain things in avatars like gore or lolicon.

Or avatars that obviously come from porn but are cropped in such a way to remove the naughty bits. Those kind of make me nervous when I visit GAF at work since it's so obvious.

7. Rushing to make a joke as the first response to a new thread. 9 times out of 10 it isn't funny, stop it.

I've been annoyed at the "jokification" of NeoGAF lately. Everybody loves a good joke but I swear many threads are just attempted joke after joke with fewer posts containing actual serious discussion. While I'm sure a large portion of the userbase likes this, it has made the board less serious and ultimately less interesting to me personally.

Haha, this isn't a recent phenomenon, but at the same time, in the past there was room for both. Now you can easily flood a thread in minutes.

The only thing that bugs me very much is when Pimpwerx signs his posts with PEACE. I don't know why, it's just kind of dumb.

Anyways, rather than continue complaining about it I wrote a quick script to get rid of it. It's a greasemonkey script if anyone would like to use it. It may remove other 'PEACE." occurrences if someone quotes Pimpwerx and then says it themselves, but I don't really feel like going through the trouble of fixing that tonight.

Here is the script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/177968

I stated before that I hated people who complained about spoilers and beg for spoiler tags, but now I'm annoyed by posters who spoiler tag non-spoilers. It's like, get a fucking life. I should just automatically put those people on ignore, but I'm too lazy. It's just pointless though. Nothing under those spoiler tags is ever worth the effort of clicking on it anyway, so why even bother? The spoiler tag feature was the worst addition to this forum.

Boy, it would've been even more annoying if I'd decided to end my posts in "FIN." like I originally wanted to when I started on usenet. I got the idea from the french cartoons I watched growing up. Pink Panther and some toon about a shark and his pal ended their credits with "FIN." in capital letters. I always liked that, so I was going to end all my posts like that. Then I think "peace out" became a thing in the early-90s and...well...the rest is history.

Fuck yo script. :P PEACE.

I don't see them much anymore, but thread titles with any variation of, "blah blah blah, or how I blah blah the blah." I hate it and I don't know why.

Never said he did, just commenting on how it's annoying in real life.

It's a slight form of sexism. If I were a boy, that cashier would not have said "hon," "honey," or "dear" to me once.

I have been called all manor of 'affectionate' things by women cashiers over the years. Frequency varied deepening where in the world I was living.

Hun, honey, sweetie, sugar, duck (a British thing), my lover, darling, darl (an Aussie one) and so on. It is not sexist in the slightest, but usage varies region by region, country by country. If you're not used to this is it isn't common where you grew up, then I can see how you could find it weird. But in general, there is no malice in it.

Edit: sorry Cyan, missed your post.

I was reading a thread a few months ago where someone replied to him and added "WAR" to the end of their post. It cracked me up at the time.

If you post any images that are popular on reddit. Like the space dude saying "we have an arrogant person present" or the bird hair actor with "is that what you said?" And the images are always huge.

That's not a GAF thing. They even talk about teamwalt on Talking Bad after the show.

There is just WAY too much talk about Breaking Bad, and TV in general, out there.

Roughly 3/4ths of front page threads on Reddit was about Breaking Bad, right after Sunday's Episode.

People with no understanding of cinema and its history suddenly turn into little Pauline Kael's, trying to explicate Breaking Bad in today's cultural context, obsessively deciphering allegorical clues in each episodes. What a waste of energy--they would get so much more results in they directed that elsewhere (to classic cinema, say).
