What anime besides Steins; Gate and Attack on Titan are worth watching?

I cannot recommend this enough times, but Hellsing Ultimate was absolutely fantastic, and i have a similar taste to what the OP likes.

Just my $0.02

I would definitely check out Macross Plus since you like Bebop and Champloo. It's great and has the same director as well as Yoko Kanno doing the music.

A few others that are must watch:

OVA
Gunbuster
Diebuster
R.O.D (Read or Die)

Movie
Ninja Scroll
Sword of the Stranger
Memories

TV
Gankutsuou
Hajime no Ippo
GTO

Part of being an anime fan is embracing the bad.

Sword. Art. Online.

I just have three things I want to say...

1)SD-Ness...props for starting this thread, as I was thinking of starting a similar thread very soon, which brings me to my first problem...

2)This thread presents a very serious dilema for me, as I am smack dab in the middle of figuring out which shows I want to want that I haven't seen, and the posters in this thread, god bless your heart, are throwing out a gazillion recommendation which all seem exceIlent, and ones I could easily see myself enjoying. There's just WAY too much good shit out there. Decisions decisions....

3)Just a quick list of anime I've seen that I'd consider essential/God-tier, that quite frankly I'm surprised got very little or no mention at all:

Macross(all of it, especially the original SDF TV series)
The Vision of Escaflowne
Berserk
Princess Nine
Now and Then, Here and There
wait for it....Dragon Ball and DBZ

Guys what about the following two, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet?

Initial D
Betterman

Nobody mentioned Shiki? If you like mystery/suspense in a small town setting you will love this anime.

Betterman

havn't seen betterman but man I love initial d, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Also Hajime no Ippo, better than the rocky moveis...

Code Gaess, Monster, Welcome to the N.H.K, and Hajime No Ippo seem to be getting the most mentions. I;ll cheggem out :)

It's certainly outdated in part but the quality of the titles at the top of the list is generally very hard to question. Apparently everyone had great taste (e.g. taste I agree with) back in 2007.

Well there's actually a few really well animated action scenes but that's what youtube is for. Although it is fair to say that, on a whole, the animation is average to bad.

Hard to make that conclusion. The 2007 was an all time vote, while the newer lists are for that year.

Just wrapped up my second viewing of The Vision of Escaflowne and loved every minute of it.

I'm planning on watching either Evangelion(OG series) again for the second time, or watching RahXephon for the first time. Which one would you go with first?

Well, considering that RahXephon was influenced, in part, by Evangelion it would make sense to start with Evangelion.

Since I also enjoy the two anime mentioned in the thread title, perhaps my and OPs taste in anime are similar enough, so...

Anime that I find good, enjoyable, and can recommend:
Cross Game - just watch the first episode, then decide.
Girls und Panzer - cute girls doing Tank-Won-Do
Tiger & Bunny
Daily Lives of High School Boys - enjoyable boys comedy as well as a piss-take on "cute girls doing cute things" shows.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru
Hunter x Hunter, old or new version, they`re both great.
Space Bros.
Love Live - the weakest of the bunch here, but an "idol girls" show that just got me in a happy mood, so I`ll just sneak it in.

Baccano!
Baccano!
Baccano!
Baccano!

How could I forget it.

A very fun anime with it's own style and flair with great characters and takes place in the States during the prohibition era. Want something different? Go with this! The VA knocks it off the wall.

Kind of surprised people mention Titan so much but not Claymore, which is an infinitely better dark/fantasy/action series. Unfortunately it got Berserked a bit with some changes from the manga and a cliffhanger end.

You clearly have not seen Legend of Galactic Heroes.

It's good, but not THAT good.
It takes a bit too many precautions in making every single character both good and evil, to the point where it becomes so hard of a theme it's annoying.

Cowboy Bebop is DAMN, DAMN good. So is LoGH, but let's not pretend they're far off each other.

Reading your list, you should watch Fullmetal Alchemist first probably (Brotherhood, don't bother with the anime original knockoff)
Then head to Code Geass, if you liked Death Note. Prepare yourself for bombastic writing, but that's the best point.
Steins;Gate is VERY worth watching, but the first few episodes may prove a slog. Do go through though, the payoff is incredible.
Be warned that Shingeki no Kyojin won't have a anime ending, and you WILL read the manga once you chew through the anime. It's hard enough to hold off reading it while it's still ongoing.

If you didn't like Evangelion, steer clear of Utena.

Watch 2-3 episodes of Sword Art Online, be amazed, and then pretend the rest of the series doesn't exist. It's for the better.

Did I just scroll way too fast, or was Honey & Clover not mentioned? It's a really good slice of life anime. Also, Ghost in the Shell: SAC & 2nd Gig, Azumanga Daioh, Planetes, Cowboy Bebop, Juuni Kokki (12 Kingdoms) and a whole lot more.

Juuni Kokki is an outstanding work but the anime will just leave anyone disappointed by the end.

OK guys here's the deal...

Now that I'm going through my anime and looking for new stuff to watch, I'm planning to eventually start getting into Gundam. I have read in certain forums that these are the essential Gundams to watch...

Zeta Gundam
Gundam Wing
Turn A Gundam
Gundam Seed

Any other ones besides these I should be bothered with?

Also, what order should I watch those four in? Should I start with Zeta Gundam first? Then what?

I have seen the Movie Trilogy but haven't watched it about 13 years. Don't really remember anything about it.

Zeta is more impactful if you have the events of the original series or at least the movies fresh in your head.

The rest are stand alone but you'll soon see most Gundams are retellings of the original story so it's fun to have that in the back of your head.

I'd add G Gundam to your list as it it's quite unique. Also Seed Destiny is basically required..it's like Zeta to original.

Yorkshin City is one of those legendary arcs.. like Kyoto Arc, L Arc, Black Rose Arc.. just phenomenal.

Edit: Also Brother Dear Brother and Initial D are must watches. Someone earlier said Titan was the best manga to anime adaptation, which is not only lol-worthy but just wrong. Seeing D brought to life back in the late 90s with that cgi and soundtrack.. that story was meant to be animated.

I'll just ramble my list.

Claymore (shocking)
Fate Stay Night
Fate Zero
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Berserk
Hellsing
Eureka Seven
Elfen Lied
Ghost in the Shell 1,2
Black Lagoon
Ergo Proxy
Death Note
Time of Eve
The Garden of Words
Wolf's Rain
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Have fun, http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main

Attack on Titan is a lot better than some people are making it out to be. Maybe it doesn't quite live up to the insane hype and popularity, but it's a good show imo, and I look forward to it every week which is something I haven't had with an anime in a long time.

Your statement makes sense now, but would be hard to believe around eps 10-16. It scratches the Berserk/Claymore itch but is lacking a spark to make it really stand out.

Gundam 00..krist.. I watched that show every Sat/Sun and hated myself every time after. So bad.

I hate that im the only person that ever suggests Higurashi.
more people really need to give it a try. its definitely the best psychological anime out there.
also has an amazing soundtrack.
Do not let the bad art style fool you, this ain't some moe crap(though a few OVAs are)

Also Shiki was really good.

Free!
K
Guilty Crown
BLast of Tempest

Angel Beats

All deserve recognition for being some of the best anime out there, certainly more definitive than Steins;Gate.

Is this real life?

I'll put in another vote for Clannad and Clannad: After Story. I'd say you can power through Clannad to get to the superior sequel, but there are some choice parts in the first season too.

Edit: Eureka Seven. Go watch it OP, if you haven't already. Some parts are rage inducing, but overall, it's an ace show, with over 50 episodes of awesome.

Krist..I love Greed Island.. I remember back in 2001 or whenever it was ordering the first volume of the ova. It's back when the goal of finding Ging was driving everything. Chimera Ant arc totally wipes that out though.

Watch the movie trilogy or the original TV series before you watch Zeta. It's a direct sequel, so I'd argue that viewing the original first is a perquisite.

You should also look into some of the UC spinoffs that were OVA mini-series, like 8th MS Team and War In The Pocket; the two of those are superior to everything on your list except Zeta.
