Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 16-22 | EVO does a 360 and walks away

hour-long downtime with repetitive music and crowd shots, this is like watching an MLG event.

Except there's hot cosplayers and mike ross so it's 100x better.

People have to keep in mind that it's TGS. A tournament just happened to be put during it. Dudes have to take time to engage the spectators that they have and advertise and what not.

I really hope Capcom does not adopt this 2/3 single elimination format for the other qualifiers. The top 8 format is fine but before that it's basically a joke.

What are you talking about? EVO should just copy this format for a year and see what kind of craziness happens.

Eh, doesn't take into account the greater pool of players SF4 has, and larger international and online presence at that.

Random is a dumb word and people should stop using it in the context of fighting game consistency.

Looks like he's delusional. The only reason AE '12 has different champs every year is because of the international presence. Also, the game is much older.

The last 20 or so majors in Marvel have all been won among the same 5-6 players. That's pretty much where the god classification comes from.

I think the last time a non god won a US major was Kusuro when UMVC3 was fresh. After that its basically the same people winning all the time.

Basically in UMVC3 you always have a 25%+ chance of correctly predicting who will win the next major or hell even the next EVO... even among 2000 entrants.

eh theres 12 different champs in the us too without international presense

the reason its more random its because its more balanced .

I am not going to count this tournament as a major because the format is stupid and any game subjected to that format would yield stupid results.

The difference between Marvel and AE in terms of player results is simply that the top 6 or so players in AE are nearly even matched in a tournament format with the next 12 players also strong on their heels. In Marvel the top 5-6 are near evenly matched for the most part but there's a huge drop after the top 6 which leads to less variance in results.

Its harder to predict a winner in a stacked AE tourney versus predicting a winner in a stacked Marvel tourney. Has nothing to do with the "randomness" of either games... it's a matter of skill and performance gap.

So basically Fchamp called SF4 more random because Daigo was taken out by one of the top Japanese Vipers who has made top 32 in at EVO two years in a row and Infiltration got taken out by the #2 ranked(from Japanese arcade rankings) Sakura player who has never traveled overseas to play in a tournament?

I'd say you can put maybe the top 50 AE players in a similar category. And depending on the match ups, A can beat B who can be C who can beat A like the Daigo/Kyabetsu/Choco matches showed us. All those burn kicks that Daigo kept getting hit by. Choco just laughs at it because she can sit on down back and EX up ball it every time.

Anyone who describes either game as random is an idiot. The only thing random (and technically, it's still not random) in Marvel is shit like Hsien Ko's projectile. Even then, that can be intentionally selected but just not in a practical manner.

This is one of the worst discussions in this thread yet.

Phoenix Wright's evidence is the only thing truly rolled in Marvel IIRC.

There are only three random elements in UMV3 (one is a problem):

Hsien Ko item toss (doesn't matter in high level also this isn't completely random IIRC)
Phoenix Wright item pick up (doesn't matter in high level)
Dimension Slash/Phantom Dance cross up (technically its not random all the time, FChamp broke it down into where it crosses up but for practical purposes its random and its incredibly stupid)

Also this wasn't what FChamp was talking about.. it was about "randomness" of results or rather the stability in predicting who is likely to win a tournament.
