PS4 vs. Xbox One poll - Tokyo Game Show Edition

Oh good... Maybe MS won't buy up all the next generation exclusives from Japan I love and send them to die. Namco's Tales series was a huge failure on the X1, as was essentially any RPG.

At least MS knows their audience now... Zombie games like DR, shooters, and Kinect casual games. The lack of anything distinctly Japanese in their lineup is encouraging for PS4 and Nintendo owners.

We all know that MS could essentially buy anything they want, and they are no longer buying up the games I care about. Now, if only Sony and Nintendo don't do the same. Free competition!

WTF is wrong with some of the people on this thread. Guys acting like no one in Japan buys video gaming consoles when over 23 million were sold this gen. Thats like a 8% decline from last gen.

Agree.

Efforts to minimize the importance of Japan to gaming are suspicious. Sony, MS and Nintendo all tried their best to capture that market, and any implication otherwise is just silly.

360 didn't do as well as it deserved to in Japan, and Xbone doesn't deserve to do as well as 360 did.

Then why bother releasing it there at all? Of course its relevant.

At this point it's just a formality. That and they do have some great relationships with some Japanese devs. Other than that Japan is not that relevant at all (at least for Microsoft).

They buy video games, but as I said on PSP/DS/3DS, not on PS3/360, or not that much than before... And I know what I'm talking about, I lived in Japan more than a year, and except handled systems nobody play games, well not "nobody", but not a lot.

I really just do n0t understand the dismissing of Japan. How many other countries in the developed world have a bigger market than Japan???? Only one.

How many people bought the PS3 in Japan? Your anecdotal evidence is useless.

What I took from this video: PleSteFour is a cool abbreviation for the ps4. That's all.

But there was an article on kotaku that said Japanese people where interested in TitanFall

o.O

They propably all said PS4 because clearly Japan's favorite title is on there: Killzone where they will have large-scale tournaments and the winner would be treated like a rockstar

At least that is what the PS4 commercial told me :P

Didn't MS put forth a legitimate attempt to break into the Japanese market with the 360 and were essentially presented with a giant middle finger by the Japanese gaming community? I can't fault them for not dedicating as much time, energy and resources towards winning over the Japanese market this time around. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

They put forth an effort for a year or two. People didnt buy in because they felt Microsoft would drop it and everything would just get ported to PS3 anyway. I'd say they're pretty damn vindicated by now.

This just in, the sun rose this morning .....

MS pushed hard in Japan with the 360. Buying up Mistwalker exclusives, getting Dead Rising from Capcom, quirky games from Rare like Viva Pinata, Panzar Dragoon Orta, Project Silpheed title, Final Fantasy, etc.

Still managed to sell next to nothing ( 1m overall? )

Absolutely nothing they could do this generation for Japanese folk / Asian folk to plop down 500$ for a Xbox One.

Yep, and they practically killed Mistwalker in the process and ensured games like Tales of Vesperia never made it onto PS3 in the west. They were overly aggressive and it got them nowhere.

So in other words its MS fault that they reached out to Japan and were ignored.

Sometimes you have to cut your losses. MS could spot Sony 20 million units in Japan and still outsell the PS4 worldwide. That's how insignificant Japan is from a sales perspective. Even Sony silently acknowledges this.

Any effort on Microsoft's part in Japan is a symbolic one that respectfully acknowledges Japan's contribution to console gaming. They should have a precense there but I Wouldn't spend one more dime than I have to.

What????!!!! How do you figure that??!!

Not to go in circles, but based on this I don't see how MS could have succeeded.

I have to imagine they went in thinking something along the lines of...

Okay, here's our game plan for Japan. We're going to do this, this and this and then re-evaluate where we are in X time. If by then we haven't made any significant progress we will scale back our efforts and shift our focus.

If you couple that with the viewpoint you are presenting then the outcome was inevitable...
MS: We'll only continue to support the Xbox 360 in Japan if they buy our product. | Japan: We're not going to buy the Xbox 360 because MS won't support it.

That's the less important pie in the equation.

Imagine if all the Japanese devs decide that they shouldn't even bother supporting Xbox, if Sony's platforms have enough of an install base globally. ( especially if PS4 can establish itself as a leading console early-on )

Being in Japan matters even if just as a show. The elephant-in-the-room for Japanese devs to not want to support Xbox is always there.

You really think MS gives a damn if they got zero Japanese dev support?

They'll get the MGS and FF because square and konami want that western $$$

So will Sony, and Sony will also get support from the smaller devs.

The point is to at least be have parity as much as possible.

Right now, any fans of Japanese games will not even consider getting an Xbox, because support from the largest all the way to the smallest console devs can be expected on Playstation, whereas Xbox will only have the big franchises.

Err... no they couldn't. MS "spotted" Sony around 8 million gap in Japan this gen and didn't outsell them worldwide even with a decent head start (particularly in Europe).

If Sony got a 20 million lead in Japan they'd demolish MS worldwide.

You're right about MS approach to Japan in a sense though - they recognize the market legacy and worth and keep trying as they have to.

I presume your post is driven by the enthusiasm of loyalty but come on - let's try and keep the examples somewhat in line with reality.

I'm sure this will happen. PS4 pre-orders are proof few ppl want a $500 xbone and PS4 will be lead-console for many games with 2:1 sales leads. Giving Japanese devs no inclination to support xbone. Plenty of PS3 games don't come on 360. One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 etc.

I really can't remember hearing anything about the xbone or 360 this week.

Neither can I.

Shocking news.
I don't see Xbone selling as well as 360 did over ps3 except may be USA and some parts of Europe.
0 people in Japan wants Xbone is really not a shocking news. It's still mainly a 3DS> Sony>>>>>>>>>>MS market.

Why is this a surprise? Microsoft isn't even trying in Japan anymore.
Microsoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the Xbone, nor will they purchase any of Microsoft's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but M$ has alienated an entire market with this move.

Microsoft, publicly apologize and cancel the Xbox One in Japan or you can kiss your business goodbye.
I see what you just did there.

You need a lot more arrows between 3DS and Sony (PS3).
