Wrong. There's self shadowing coming from the particles. Of course they're soft because of the numerous lights, but they are there. Also his feet are clearly casting shadows.

That's something that's been bugging me for quite some time and I'm glad you brought it up. As a non tech person, one thing that comes to mind when people discuss managing the esram is all those gymnastics the system has to do to utilize the esram, those are all extra "steps" in the rendering of the game. To me that makes the system inefficient.

The difference is it seems to be relatively trivial to use the eDRAM on the 360 (there were launch games that run at 720p with AA and alpha transparencies), but a massive fucking pain in the ass and difficult to use the SPEs*. It took years for devs to get to grips with the intricacies of the Cell, and only really Sony's first party studios that made the PS3 sing.
* I can't wait for this gen to end an I get my username back. Sony still haven't paid me royalties for it.

What's impressive is that gif is that each particle in the scene is a light emitter. which I think you ignored. This is why it looks so impressive compared to actual old-hat videos of GRAW and that dual teleport particle columns posted after it. (I also see that I'm really late with posting this).

You may want to look at the material by his feet throughout the gif. There is a very nice, soft shadow during the entire thing. To say there isn't shadows is pretty silly.
Honestly don't think we've seen next-gen COD running on anything yet.

Have console launches always been this miserable and I just haven't paid attention? I recall being so excited about getting the Gamecube, PS2, Xbox (and 360) N64 etc etc and going online when it was possible and people seemingly feeling the same way.
