US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

It was only a matter of time since (most of) the people who run our government are so incompetent.
This will go along swimmingly just like the fiscal cliff
dive
we did a while back.
The politicians who could make a difference avoid going to the senate/house or whatever other upper level
because they don't want to deal with the -ahem- politics and drama of Washington. That's what I think, at least.

In the end this is Boehner's fault. He's shown he is incompetent and a coward. I thought he was a rational actor, but he's proved me wrong. I can't even be bothered wasting my anger at the tea party.

Depends on what you consider rationality to be in this circumstance. Sure, he may be screwing the country, but had he passed a clean CR he probably would have lost his position as Speaker. He thinks the GOP House majority is secure as long as he keeps their base happy and energized. I hope he's wrong.

What are the chances the news spins this so the public blames the President and Democrats more than Republicans?

They can try, but it won't happen. Even Wolf "I'm not much better than a mimeograph machine" Blitzer was calling GOP House members out on this earlier. Even Fox News had an entire panel on Hannity's show calling the House GOP out on this.

It's so much easier to argue about video games than it is politics. Anyone else with me on that one?

Republicans doing the best they can to destroy their despicable party I see. Since democrats are too pathetic to do it I'm glad someone stepped up to the challenge.

I still have to go to jury duty tomorrow right? Not like I don't want to, I think.

If my experience at other national parks is any indication, this means I can go to Yosemite for free because no one will be at the gate to take my money...right?

So... Why did they shut it all down exactly?
Short answer: Republicans.

Longer answer: cry-baby republicans want to hold the government hostage because they don't like a bill(affordable care act) that was put into law through the constitutional process and was upheld by the supreme court.

Ah Christ, it just occurred to me that I have a license application in to the DEA. Is that going to be delayed by this? Fuck.

So, the Promised Day has arrived.

so fucking infuriating.

The GOP wants to defund Obamacare, so they're holding the country hostage in a last ditch effort to do it.

It's pure bullshit.

You can't have nice things!

But more specifically even the GOP is sick of the Teaparty. I wonder if in a few years the schism will be large to form a more distinct 3rd party.

"
So... This means funding to the NSA stops?

Oh, right. "Shut down" just means no more funding for the things we actually care about and need."

- American Mcgee on Facebook

All legal functions that are not necessary for whatever is defined as basic security are completely gutted. Well, the independently funded Post Office will continue to run, as will Social Security and Medicare, being nondiscretionary spending items. U.S. courts will operate for a week or two and SCOTUS will probably be fine when it convenes next week, as it apparently has been in the past.

So a whole bunch of laws, mostly pertaining to unimportant stuff like the environment, regulatory oversight, and consumer protection, will go essentially unenforced.
In Australia our constitution allows for a clean slate election across both houses in these situations. America may want to consider it.

Republicans are the motorbike riders and Obama is the Range Rover driver, just waiting for him to press the pedal to the metal.

Thanks to the Tea Party, I'm now getting an eye style (pimple on eyelid).

Yes, I'm blaming them. I'm also blaming them for the 49ers being 2-2 and MS screwing up Rare.

Would be nice if the Repubs would swing left and disown the Tea Party. Would cause the Dems to move left as well to differentiate themselves from the Repubs.

Odds on the budget being passed tomorrow/today?

The Republicans can say they fought the (ugh) good fight to the end, but now that implementation has begun it's a done deal.

Are they really going to keep up this fight over a law that has now been fully implemented?

Stupid shit republicans. Fuck them and all they stand for.

Did u call your representatives and voice your concern? Is anyone in this thread calling and giving their opinion/belief to their congress person? Common people do your job. Democracy doesn't happen if no one gets involved.

The U.S. has a big ass credit card bill. We like to pay it on time. Then the affordable healthcare act was passed that lowers healthcare costs. "Small business owners" and people that provide healthcare to employees (i.e. your employers) don't want to pay for employees' healthcare because they are rich motherfuckers and don't give two shits about people. That also includes people who don't have insurance.

Cue Tea Party Republicans who bitch about government spending but gave us eight years of George Bush spending billions every month to drop bombs on Iraq.

A law was passed that even liberals don't like. Single payer system for life. In this case, Republicans don't like a law that was passed and are holding up Uncle Sam from paying its bills on time because bootstraps and fuck people without healthcare.
