US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

Until the Boehner and the Republican members of the House cave. Most people didn't think the shut down would even happen, I'll admit I was one of them.

Term limits wouldn't have done shit to prevent this. If anything they would just make Congress more corrupt. Get in, bow to your lobbyist overlords and get out. If you want to fix congress you need to look to campaign finance reform. Money is the root of all evil, especially in politics. Make it so people can buy seats in Congress and you'll go a long way towards fixing it.

epic typo :P

So if I don't work for the government nothing will happen. Gotcha!

if you don't work for the government AND don't rely on "non-essential" government services like some social services, yes.

Or business from people who get paychecks from the government, or to whom the government is a customer, or to whom a contractor of the government is a customer.....

Also, this.

Unless you're a federal employee (you'd already know if you were), like to visit a lot of museums, or only go to national parks when rangers are working, it won't really affect you.

Wrong. Lots of businesses will suffer. I won't be getting a coffee at my local coffee shop for a while. I'll probably cancel cable as well.

Did you not know that the federal government funds private businesses (and is at root the sole source of business funding)?

Well you should.

TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS WORKS YOU GUYS.

wait a second...

I don't really know how to use Twitter effectively but I picked a government shutdown hashtag and almost all tweets that placed specific blame were saying that "people on foodstamps are going to cause riots tomorrow so watch out."

I have so little faith in the voting populace that I just feel jaded at this point. I guess I can latch on to the idea that people who bitch on Twitter aren't representative of the majority, but I don't know how true that is...

I think it's time we put term limits on Congressmen. This is just embarrassing
........

You realize this is because the Tea Party wave of 2010, a sect of 30 or so people in the Republican House Majority, has thus far been telling the rest of their party, their Speaker, the Senate, and the White House how to run things?

~30 people. And don't you forget that. Republicans will try to call out Dems who aren't perfect by any means but this is a crisis manufactured by an incredibly small but ideologically insane group of people.

John Boehner is not doing his job -- you should know he has the power to bring the clean CR bill (what the Senate sent back) to the floor, and he would have had at least 100 Republican votes for that. Combined with Democratic votes, it would have passed just in time and there would be no shutdown.

When 30 people within a party that only controls one branch of Government are dictating the entire process thus far, that's all you really need to know, outside posturing be damned. The Tea Party's platform is one of pure lunacy, plain and simple.

They're just the vocal minority. Keep in mind the Dems got 1.7 million more votes for their House members than the GOP, the only reason Pelosi isn't speaker right now is that congressional districts have been gerrymandered to hell and back.

Will city transportation be affected? I need the bus to get to work.

If you live in washington DC?

possibly.

Otherwise, why would it? This is a federal government shutdown, not a city/state govt shutdown.

Title should be edited to reflect reason of government shutdown, so they can play GTA Online and BF4 beta tomorrow all day.

What this comes down to is that John Boehner is more interested in his speakership than funding the government. He's not a tea partier he just doesn't want to get kicked out by them. If he would bring the clean Senate passed CR to the floor it would pass with a majority of democrats and a small minority of republicans. But he isn't willing to do that because it would spell the end of his speakership, or so he thinks.

Looks like Twitter isn't essential.

No, DC isnt shutting down anything.

Full metro, bus and circulator service.

The District government will not close during the federal shutdown — meaning trash will be collected, permits and licenses will be issued, and city offices will remain open.

“Unless somebody takes me out in handcuffs, I’m not shutting down anything,” Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) said Saturday during a Potomac River cruise with a group of civic leaders.

The decision to remain open came after city lawyers on Friday approved the use of a special reserve fund, containing $218 million or more, to keep the District operational during a federal shutdown. Separately, Gray has sought to designate all of the city’s 32,000 employees as exempt from shutdown furloughs — a decision that, if accepted by President Obama’s budget office, could render use of the reserve fund unnecessary.

DC has no desire to deal with this shit.

Cutting non-essential shit isn't going to tailspin the country.

Funding for WIC, Medicare, Medicaid, social security, and eventually food stamps would indeed tailspin our country into another recession.

Not to mention the 800,000 people who won't get a paycheck causing a cascade effect of all the businesses that they venture to.

Cutting non-essential shit isn't going to tailspin the country.

Non-essential who still require a fucking paycheck to live?. The same ones who still spend money at businesses, for food, clothing, etc. What about the non-essential government contracts that other businesses require to function?

EV said it more eloquently than I could have.
