Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | October 2013 | Ver 2000, Batman and some Angry Birds

September was a good month, bought DJMAX Technika Tune (amazing game), Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz (best portable version by far) and Sly 4 (on queue).

A toast to Vita's future

That's an actual photo of our engagement in NY

hope so (re the future) having just got on the train.

is it an Indie only future or can they get lots of sales with ps4 and get some big games back on it?

they've done some brilliant stuff. Uncharted and LBP have blown me away. Shame if we don't see more of that quality and scale.

After talking with my buddy in Japan, I decided to order two more of the new Vitas, the Light Blue and Lime Green.

This got expensive
and stupid
fast...

- 1 White Vita 2000 ¥ 18,995
- 1 Black/Khaki 2000 ¥ 18,995
- 1 Light Blue 2000 ¥ 18,995
- 1 Lime Green 2000 ¥ 18,995

- 1 Khaki sleeve case ¥ 1,282
- 1 White Sleeve Case ¥ 1,282
- 1 Light Bluesleeve case ¥ 1,282
- 1 Lime Greensleeve case ¥ 1,282

- 1 64GB Memory card ¥ 8,572
- 4 PlayStation Vita Protective Film ¥ 645x4 =2540

But seriously, can we talk about how awesome the colors are?

Question for NA VitaGaf: Should I pick up Dragon's Crown? I had my eye on it when it released back in August, but with Uni and all I kind of forgot about it. Seeing it in the OP reminded me of its existence, so is it still worth it? Online still alive, etc.?

id say it depends how badly you want a new game. the combat can get quite repetitive, but if you are someone who likes castle crashers and the like, it might not be a problem for you.

i'd say you want a group of people you can play online with.

YES

One of the best games on the system period.

Worth it for the first playthrough alone but then you get so much more out of the 100 floor Chaos Dungeon!

It is a pain to beat the game on each difficulty to completely unlock i though but I had tons of fun the whole way through. The loot/quests helps you get past the repetition a bit

The combat looks pretty cool to me; I've heard it's repetitive, but how different are the characters' styles? Also, is there still a reasonably big VitaGaf following for the game?

i assume there's a few, but I never played it online. I purchased it for the PS3 (which i never really touched) and the vita (where i leveled 2 characters to about level 13)

it's a beautiful looking game, but i personally don't think the combo system is great. would be much better if you had a group you could consistently play with, for sure.

the styles are different enough i suppose, but this type of game wants you to stick to a character for a lot of time before switching

So about a year ago I sold my Vita to buy an iPad 3 (currently have iPad 4).

Now I am thinking about jumping back in to Vita. The iPad game library is great, and it does get a little too much hate for touch controls (many games work just fine). But other games do indeed suck on a touch only device.

Vita Vita.

Hope there's a bundle with PS4 sooner than later. I'll keep the PS4, and give the Vita to my brother so he can FINALLY experience the majestic flawlessness that is P4G.

unfortunately we can't be picky with who we allow into the cool-kids-vita-club, as we need everyone we can get

but I definitely have my eye on you

I did pretty much the same thing (sold it because I didn't see how I'd have time for both), but came to the opposite conclusion to you. I hate trying to control anything without buttons (unless it's specifically designed to be played that way).

I bought Bastion, as I'd been wanting to play it ever since the reveal (before MS exclusivity), but got nowhere at all. I still have my iPad, but will never play games on it. Ever.

Buttons for life yo!

Work on getting those shortcuts open. Always exercise caution. Look for traps and spiders. Look down before jumping.

I think a gaffer made a huge spelunky post that had great tips in the last vita thread

yea, that was me.

shortcuts are pointless unless you want to unlock the 2 secret characters. it makes you feel good when you complete the temple short cut, but you shouldn't be using them anyway

As a fellow person that sucks, I've been using them just to help get acclimatised to the lower levels.

Just got my Vita in time for the new thread! :)
So far I'm really pleased with the system. Really solid piece of hardware. Loved the multitasking - playing Mortal Kombat while downloading Unit13 and Soul Sacrifice and installing them at the same time. Will be redeeming a 1 month trial for PS+ to get some games and most likely will purchase an year worth of subscription.
To the guys who answered my questions in the old thread, after all I went with a Bulgarian PSN ID, for the simple fact that it will be a lot easier for me to pay in my local currency. Also according to few friends, the BG store is almost identical to the UK one, since they are closely working with the British to bring us the same experience, hope it won't disappoint me.
Feel free to add me as an PSN contact - swnnyh

On the PS+ side of things, I see that Uncharted GA and Wipeout will be pulled down in the end of November. Any guesses what they will add as next yearly titles?
I'm really hoping one of it will be Persona 4 Golden. Funny thing is, that Uncharted GA was released in February 22, 2012 and was made avaiable on PS+ half an year later in November. Persona 4 Golden was released in February 22, 2013 and they are about to change the yearly games in November. Coincidence? I think not! BELIEVE! :)
(talking about EU release dates here)

I can only make it to level 2-1 consistently. I have so much trouble with the spiked totem poles.

the are harder if you have the climbing gloves but no spring shoes. you need to learn how to fake them out.

they are only "active" when the spike it fully extended. its all about making them come out, then moving.

get the timing down with the jump, jump (meaning jump to grab the top of the tiki trap, then jumping again after grabbing the ledge to jump on top of them)

the gloves make them harder because predicting what you'll grab onto is rough and only comes with experience.

Good to have you on board and to see you enjoying the Vita so much!

Why hasn't Sony made a locoroco 3 yet for the Vita?

Instead of shelling out on memelands they could have brought back some good ol classic PSP IPs for the Vita.

Papaton and Locoroco would be amazing on this thing

Responding to posts from previous thread...

Welcome Marc,

Congrats on the purchase. Don't feel so bad about the fighting games - I personally think the complexity of the modern fighting game has gone up quite a bit.

I think out of the must have games you listed, you're missing Spelunky for one. I'd bump up Killzone Mercenary because it's a real showpiece title, one of my favorite games on the system. Batman and Tearaway look like the ones to watch in October and November. BigFest is indeed free.

If you're up for some more leftfield games, I'd recommend Soul Sacrifice, DJ Max (import), Lone Survivor and Thomas Was Alone. These might not be to your taste but are a sample of the diverse range of games you'll see on Vita.

Thanks $h@d0w

Yeah, definitely more moves and systems in place to learn but just messing up on the basics and can't remember all the old moves so button mashing more often. Weird though, I used to play as Sub-Zero all the time and can only remember a few of the basic ice moves, play as Freddy Kruger instead and do waaay better with him.

Spelunky doesn't really appeal to me, I heard all the love, just not feeling it myself. I figure thats a game that will come to PS plus at some point anyway. Waiting for the price to go down a bit for Killzone as I enjoyed the beta but didn't feel the analogue sticks are quite up for FPS's. Thats a thing about Vita in general actually, the top tier games seem to go for £28+ which would be fine at the start of the current gen, but not now. I mean I saw the new Splinter Cell game going for £19 and Killzone is still going for like £30 and I would bet it is a much shorter game. Tearaway going for £19 right off the bat is much more reasonable and I will buy day one.

Soul sacrifice was definitely on my radar, one of the games that first attracted me to Vita, but seeing Killzone and what vita is capable of I think I am now going to wait for the sequel. And hopefully play it from PS plus one day. Thanks for the recommendations, will take a look at them. :D

Look in the Cheap Ass Gaffer Europe Thread to look for cheapest for Dragon's Crown Vita.
Far as PSP games go, get into
Store.SonyEntertainmentNetwork.com
Enter your region and look the Vita section to see what PSP games are vita compatible.
Enjoy your Vita mate and welcome to the club~

Cheapest I have seen is around £35, which is the same as a new PS3 release game, in my mind handheld game versions should be far cheaper. That might be my own misguided expectations but can't justify that. Arkham Origins is going for £30 already in preorder, can't help these companies move units in general. Yeah, the dedicated gamer will pick it up but the masses will look at that on the shelf thinking about buying a vita and just write it off. Will probably be cheaper to import it once its released in the EU, won't be as much demand.

Thanks for that, way better to search through than using the PS Store itself.

Some games work fine if designed for touch. Rayman Jungle Run is an example. Others that don't require quick inputs and reflexes like The Room or turn based strategy / board games work great on iPad. But for action/platforming games, real buttons are so much better. I struggled through Capsized+ and enjoyed it, but so many times I fought with controls or got a cramp from holding a heavy iPad.

Vitagaf's finest Top 20:

Frost defending the top spot and Takao with a big comeback in September. Not such a busy month for Aytrial but with RalchAC we have a new face in the Top 10.
Overall, over 3000 less posts in September than in August. TGS wasn't as interesting as Gamescom?

Great! First time in the wall of shame. But I have most of September free. I'm yet to see what can i do now that i've started university... what i'm trying to lie, i'll probably comment even more in classes xD.

I'm happy to put my hand up for either collaborating with someone or going solo writing up the monthly thread.

Anyway, I'm super excited for Dragon's Crown this month. I've been waiting for ages for a side-scrolling brawler. The itch has kinda been scratched by Muramasa, but the random counters have been far too short for my liking in it.

I can help you with the thread if you want. I don't think I have enough time for making it all by myself, but send me a PM if you need / want my.

I'm buying Dragon's Crown too. Let's have some co-op together, EU gaffers!

I haven't played Dc online yet, not had the chance, will be up for some of those eu games when I'm back soon for sure. Na too, why not.

Also had a chance to play kzm online the other day :) finally, I can rest easy now. It must have been an issue with the routers I was trying like someone mentioned I guess, weird though.

Anyway it also gave me the chance to download one of my new eu ps+ games, new little king story. The game is awesome! Framerate so far is totally fine, just drops a little when walking about your town, non issue. I'm still only 5 hours or so in so maybe it gets worse later but I'm really enjoying it, very charming. I never played the original. Quite a few weird texts too.

As mentioned before, this'll be my last month overlooking the monthly Vita threads. Both classwork and (normal) work has caught up to me and I don't quite have the time to give these threads the same attention I used to. Back when I agreed to do these, the original idea was for it to be a more collaborative effort, so I'm passing the torch on to whoever wants it. I know he/she can give them more love than I can right now!

Thank you, it's appreciated. Best thread on GAF
now that Breaking Bad is over
.

I don't know what "memelands" refers to but the LocoRoco games never sold well, and the director of the Patapon games has left Sony (Pyramid?).

Feel free to either continue my current format or come up with your own. It's your thread now, mold it as you please!

You're all still my muffins.

Thank you Noi, a fantastic job you have done facilitating these threads every month. I greatly appreciate them and your effort.

I really do love the Vita and our little community on GAF is pretty awesome so sign me up as a 'contributor'. If anybody needs write ups or info or maybe just a post formatter, I'm your guy. Not good with graphics so I can't help with images but everything else, sign me up.

I think maybe we should vote for head Vitacat who can bring some order to everyone involved. I also think we should keep Noi's cool Vitablurbs such as Game of the Month as well.

I just want to be a part of it all and make an active contribution to GAF.

Well, Octobers my birthday month so yay to that... I was pretty busy in Sept and that got in the way of my Vitatime and now Pokémon is in coming... Blarg lol.

After my hsrdcore pokehype dies out, I'm gonna start swapping between Vitadays and Pokedays since I have a 3DS XL now..

Octobers Vita releases don't look to fulfilling but I have a nice backlog anyway. Holla for Rayman Origins!! I can hold out till Legends is cheaper... AND I still need Killzone to cop too...
