Disclaimer: I have never been in a relationship.
That being said, I can still offer some opinion on the matter. From my experience (observing from a distance) dating is a pretty brutal thing, in the sense that obviously your partner needs to be attracted to something in you, and that most of the time is one of two things: 1) You look good/better than average. 2) You look average, but have a great personality.
And to accomplish 1) I would suggest trimming the hair, ask a hairdresser for suggestions if nothing else and work out to lose weight and gain muscles. 2) Try to be funny or memorable in some way.
Obviously I am oversimplifying, and once again I have never been in a relationship, so perhaps someone else will offer better insight. Also, you don't have to date, you know, do it if think you'll enjoy it and that your partner will enjoy you, not just for the sake of dating.
