It struck me earlier while I was in the shower that, completely by accident, Nintendo have fallen upon a fantastic strategy with the Wii U.
They launched a year before their competitors, slowly penetrating the market bit by bit, admittedly trickling out new games. I love the console, but even I'm going to admit that Nintendo did screw up the launch and were perhaps too slow off the mark, depending too much on a repeat of the success of the Wii right after it launched.
Now however, we've got the upcoming launch of the PS4 and Xbox 1. The final nail in the Wii U's coffin? I say quite the opposite.

Think about it. It's early December, you're a 30 or 40 something parent out christmas shopping and planning on getting little Johnny his first games console. You walk into a game retailer and take a look around at your options.

Hm, that Xbox is sure a bit pricey for a first console isn't it? What if Johnny doesn't have much interest in games? And they're sure pushing that Call of Duty game...Johnny is only 7 years old, you don't really want him to be playing stuff like that just yet. You look at the rest of the lineup. Battlefield 4, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Ryse....well there's not a whole lot here that's very child friendly is it? Oh, and the console wont play all those awesome Xbox 360 games either to fill in the gap? Hm, maybe I'll give this one a miss.

You move on to the Playstation 4. Well this price is a bit better that's for sure, but it's still a bit on the steep side in these tough times. But let's have a look at those games. Call of Duty again, Battlefield again, Killzone, a lot of sports games, why quite a few of these aren't very child friendly either are they? There's Lego Marvel, Skylanders and Knack but beyond that there's not much variety. Little Johnny will surely get bored of those quite quickly. Let's have a look what else they have.

What's this? The Wii U? Well I don't play games myself but even I've heard of the Wii, it was on the TV a lot as doing really well wasn't it? And look at that price, over £150 cheaper than the others. I could buy at least 3 or 4 games for the price difference alone. Speaking of the games, let's have a look. Wow, look at them all, this has way more games than the Xbox or Playstation. And so much variety. Mario Brothers, Mario Brothers 3D World, Sonic the Hedgehog, Skylanders and Disney Infinity just like all of Johnny's friends are playing, Lego Marvel...there's enough here to keep Johnny entertained for a long time.
Well, with that catalogue and a price like that, I think I'll get the Wii U.

The Wii U is far from doomed. It's greatest period is just about to start.

Good post. However, this assumes that the parents know which consoles are next gen and which ones aren't. Honestly I think this holiday more people would be interested in PS3 or Xbox 360 (especially Xbox, because it's very popular in US and they might hear there's a new Xbox coming out not knowing the 360 is not new). I do hope the scenario you presented will happen though.

Given the publicity that the mainstream media has been giving them I think most parents will have an idea of which consoles are 'new' and which are 'old'. If not, most of the ones who aren't will probably just ask the staff "Which of these are the old ones?"

Guess I'm a little confused at your post, are you saying the Wii U is saved because it will sell to the 10 and under crowd?

Not exactly the saving grace I'm hoping for.

Deus Ex Director's Cut just got a release date of 10/22 in the US, and 10/25 in the EU FYI.

Montréal (September 26, 2013) – Eidos®-Montréal™, a Square Enix® studio, is pleased to announce that Deus Ex: Human Revolution® – Director’s Cut, the definitive version of the critically acclaimed action-RPG title, is shipping for Nintendo’s Wii U™ system, the Xbox 360® games and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows® PC on October 22. The Mac version will launch in the near future.

“Over the last 18 months the team has been working very hard on the development of the Director’s Cut,” said David Anfossi, Head of Studio for Eidos-Montréal. “With this edition we gave the team the envious task of pushing the boundaries in innovation and creativity to explore something we believe will become a big part of the future of the franchise, the second screen experience.”

Exclusive only to the Square Enix Online Store, a new Deus Ex novella, Deus Ex: Fallen Angel, will be free with the purchase of any console version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director’s Cut. The novella, created by James Swallow, the writer behind Deus Ex: Icarus Effect, follows the story of Malik just prior to the events of Human Revolution and is a must have for any Deus Ex fan.

Tongs’s Rescue mission and the entire Missing Link chapter have been integrated seamlessly into the narrative flow of the Director’s Cut. Other core Deus Ex: Human Revolution augmentations include overhauled boss fights, refined game balance and combat, improved AI, over 8 hours of developer commentary, and striking visual improvements which make this edition the best looking and most immersive Deus Ex experience available.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut also offers a full slate of second screen features for the Wii U GamePad, Microsoft’s SmartGlass, and the PlayStation Vita system that make the touchscreen interface Adam Jensen’s primary neural hub enhancement.

For more information about Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut, log on to http://www.DeusEx.com.

Well if Nintendo made it very obvious that the Wii U is backwards compatible as well, perhaps people might pick that up instead of the Wii. But there's always the risk of them just picking up a 360 or PS3 instead.

Guess I'm a little confused at your post, are you saying the Wii U is saved because it will sell to the 10 and under crowd?

Not exactly the saving grace I'm hoping for.

I'm sure Nintendo would take that gladly at this point.

Okay since that sale in dicksmith there have been a lot of Wii U's for sale on ebay and gumtree in australia and I managed to grab one for $199 AUD for a 32GB with nintendo land. I just bought NSMBU for $25 and a copy of Monster Hunter for $25 and I also got a Pro controller for $30. I also got two wii remote + and nunchucks for $40 for the lot and I am hoping to get a copy of zombi U today for $25 used.

Now besides PIKMIN 3 WWHD and Wonderful 101, What other games can I get right now that I cannot get on any other system that is a full retail game that is a must have title? must be released in PAL territories.

Funny how there was a 50% off sale on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate just last week. lol

There have even been permanent price reductions of retail games.

Keep spreading misinformation and/or lies. Seems to be working.

I don't know if I'm getting into anything between you two... Europe may be different but in the US there's hardly been anything. A few eShop only titles have gone on sale (usually the same handful of titles over and over again), but full retail games really haven't. That brief Monster Hunter sale and that Ubisoft 30% from ages ago are the only retail "sales" since launch. Oh, and also a couple of Virtual Console specials if you bought more than one title at launch.

Assassin's Creed 3 price dropped to $39.99 and so did NBA 2k13, but that was a long time ago too (spring?) and they are overdue for another. Other games like Tekken, Zombi U, Ninja Gaiden 3, Need for Speed, Batman Arkham City can be found on disc new for max $30 and often times under $20. Some of which I'd be interested enough to download, but certainly not at full price on the shop. I'd really like to see some of those older titles get price cuts, as I'm pretty sure the official MSRP has been lowered on many of them.

At 22 snoops it's a bargain.

Bargain? Well I don't know about that. Bought it myself for something like £18 within a month back when it originally released two years ago. Director's edition content seems okay but still trying to sell a game that has been 2,5€ multiple times on Steam it is still steep.

As someone who's never played this series before, I just would like to say that Pikmin 3 is fantastic. It's one of those games that's very relaxing and fun to play. I didn't know what to expect going in really, but yeah, I'm really impressed.

Yeah it's fine. Not 100% my cup of tea but still a solid 8/10 game. Light on content but the execution shines.

I finally reached the 3rd division in FIFA 13!

I love this, so much. It's my favorite off TV Wii U game. The rendering on the GamePad is crisp, superb. There's zero latency, it really makes a difference. And online is smooth as butter.

FIFA fans, whatever the newer version you have, you owe it to yourself to buy this game for cheap and play it off TV. It's a drug, but one of the best you'll find.

Division 3 :-)

Lego City Undercover. It's not perfect (big loading time at the beginning and when you go in and out of the police section - but that's like once or twice per gaming session) but it is a Lego open world with full of content and a great story mode. The final mission of the story is one of the most epic missions in games in the past years. After you finish the story you are at somewhere between 25% and 40% of the game completion, that's how much content is in it. Unless you have Lego games, I highly recommend it.

Just kidding :P

try to pick up zombi u new, it needs all the sales it can so we might see a sequel one day

I have a quick question.

If I bought a used Wii U would I be able to create a new nintendo network account on the console for me to use or would I have to use the previous one?

If not, can you change account names?

I FINALLY could get a Need For Speed Most Wanted U copy.
All my local retail stores were out of stock a few weeks after the game launched and all of them told me they wouldn't ask for more due to low demand.
At first I didn't care but recently it was like looking for water in the desert.
I had to pay $35 for it ¬¬ but I'm happy :D

Amazon?

Never
Amazon is shit in my country.
Actually, every single site similar to amazon is shit over here.
A friend of mine who works in a place where you can only rent games told me they had a new copy left. As soon as he told me that, I pulled the trigger.

Off to a good start there. Get New Super Luigi U DLC once you're done with Mario. I'd also recommend Lego City since it's funny and fun even for someone like me who isn't super into open world games.

You may want to look into games available for other platforms. Rayman is superb and I wouldn't want to play the Murphy levels without a touchscreen. I also re-enjoyed Darksiders 2 due to the added map/inventory on the touchscreen, really great for a loot-heavy and vast game like that. Sonic Racing is also pretty cool if you like local multi, they have some nice multiplayer options with the pad.

That's nice fanfic and all, but they'll just buy a 360 or a PS3. People are kidding themselves if they don't think the top 3 consoles/handhelds of the last 2 months of the years aren't going to be 360, ps3 and 3ds in whatever order. There is simply not going to be enough units produced of the ps4 and xbone to even compete, and if you want to factor in price it's obvious which win. (oh and 2ds as well if that's counted separate from 3ds on npds and the like)

I read posts like that and I wonder. :P. PS4 will sell truckloads, second place belongs to whoever wants it. Potentially PS3 will get because GT6.

My list in Oct-Nov very hard to decide:

October:
Batman Origin
Wii party U
Sonic Lost world
Deus Ex
Assassin Creed 4

November:

Wii Sport
Wii Fit U
Mario & Sonic 14
Watchdog
COD:Ghost
Mario 3d land

Lego city undercover. It has some loading issues but is far better than any lego games i played so far.
NSLU if you like NSMBU.

Aside of that i would recommend multiplats like Tekken tag (exclusive stuff), rayman legends and NFS Mw, which you probably can get for cheap.

So I'll maybe buy a Wii U by the end of the year, but I'm still unsure about the console because I already have a 3DS, Nintendo problems, I already played lots of Wii games, etc. I just came here to ask if these games are still active online and if it is good enough (I consider online mode good to play the games for a longer time, but is not essential to me):

- Sonic Racing Transformed
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
- Need For Speed Most Wanted
- Monster Hunter 3G

And I would like an opinion of Pikmin 3 compared to Pikmin 2, as if I'm going to find it very different, etc.

Oh, and I played a demo unit yesterday and I didn't like the sticks placement, it was very awkward for me, though the gamepad is very comfortable and light. Rayman Legends looked good and Mario U looked as bright and clean as I expected but my hype somehow deflated by playing that first Mario level. Maybe I'm burned out of the New series because I played NSMB2 last year and the game wasn't very good, add that this Mario plays the same, I didn't like the squirrel suit and I don't have anyone to play with, then I don't really know if the WiiU could be good to me (also consider that it will be a 5 year console compared to the more powerful ones that will run for more time just like PS360 right now).
I love Nintendo games and the games look so good but I'm unsure of this console. Mario 3D World looks so fun and it includes 4 very different playable characters and the level design seems to be very good (way better than 3D land, which was already good but lacked in many ways), I have never played Wind Waker (loved the 20 minute demo in Zelda Collector's Edition), The Wonderful 101 seems innovative and fun, Game & Wario looks cool and that 9-Volt minigame could be addictive, Mario Kart 8 is going to be a big thing for me but doesn't look very different from 7 gameplay wise, Smash looks very good but I could get the 3DS version, Sonic Lost World doesn't seem to be my thing, I'm not very hyped for X and Donkey Kong doesn't do much different things compared to Returns. What do you think guys?

^ I can only speak for NFSMWU out of that list. As of last month it is pretty easy to get a multiplayer lobby. Never had to wait hardly at all. But does take a BIT of time for the lobby to completely fill up, like a few minutes sometimes.

There are players, but it's not exactly bursting at the seams with activity.

- Sonic Racing Transformed
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
- Need For Speed Most Wanted
- Monster Hunter 3G

And I would like an opinion of Pikmin 3 compared to Pikmin 2, as if I'm going to find it very different, etc.

NFS MWU is still active online. Only got the game recently and immediately got into a multiplayer match.

Pikmin 3 is nothing like Pikmin 2. It's building off of Pikmin 1 and throwing its own stuff on top (multi-tasking, high score chase).

As for the sticks: It's pretty obvious that it feels weird to anyone since it's the first controller with the left stick above the buttons. In practice it's not weird at all once you've played a few games with it. You have to get used to everything, that's normal for new stuff.

They had some watchdogs footage in the latest Nintendo Direct. But it didn't say if it was wiiU footage or not.

No they didn't. They had ACIV footage taken directly from old trailer (obviously not Wii U footage). They've never shown not-PC footage of Watch Dogs anywhere. They had WD in the E3 Direct with white buttons but their are completely unreliable when it comes to that stuff. It's safer to assume all you've seen is PC.

Is that Skylanders Swap thing I keep seeing on TV on Nintendo only consoles? The ads only show thr Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. Or is it multiplat?
