US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

Well, I just took issue with the stereotyping really, because I'm in the same industry.

Don't take it personally; part of the reason I posted that to begin with was to
clumsily
demonstrate that I don't actually know that many software developers.

(Though I will say they're more likely than most other fields to tend toward the Austrian school of economics, which given that school's rejection of empiricism does lend itself well to the label "out of touch with reality")

That's funny, last time I checked we had a bicameral legislature that has power of the purse as part of the system of checks and balances, and the Republicans won one chamber in both 2010 and 2012. The people have spoken, and they spoke for gridlock and divided government, and that's what is happening.

The President was re-elected with the ACA arguably at the forefront of the election. The Dems kept the Senate. The Dems got more votes in the House and lost it only because of gerrymandering. The people have spoken indeed. ACA is no longer a bill, it is law and has been for years and was deemed constitutional by the SCOTUS. It's off the table and trying to repeal it or any portion of it has no place in passing the annual spending bill. End of story.

I remember you from the GZ thread.

Anywho, what is gerrymandering for 1000.

Still waiting for the compromise Democrats get in exchange for all this. Funding for the government is not a compromise, keeping the US credit rating afloat is not a compromise.

Hey, we still got the Patriot Act right? Obama should just declare the problem GOPers to be "enemy combatants" and we'd get this thing sorted out really quick.

Lol JK.

Sort of.

I laughed:

You don't need a study for that. It's the first five letters of the word.

Not necessarily. There are supporters of Obama that dont like 'Obamacare' and know little about it. I think its more the melding of two names like that gives it a very amateur vibe and with it being used in constant negativity in the media it triggers an automatic response regardless of what the details are.

Misinformation, the sensitivity of the subject of healthcare, and who knows how many dollars in negative advertising.

So should I prepare for Recession 2.0 and the collapse of the financial system in a few weeks?

Probably, the backwoods assholes who got themselves voted in just to dismantle the govt finally have their chance, and they're making the best of it, so that can't really go well.

A lot of those guys are giddy as hell that they actually got the govt shut down, they're going to fight tooth and nail to keep it closed, they would rather see the world burn than listen to reason.

lol, it'll be way worse than 2008 if we actually end up defaulting. Pray to god it never happens. Pray that we use the 14th amendment option or the trillion dollar coin. I'd rather rely on either of those than the House GoP.

I would say 65% yes.

Awesome. I'll stop paying my bills asap!

How would the logistics of minting a Trillion Dollar Coin work out?

You maniacs, you did this to yourselves.

When I read that, I read desperation. They can't believe the Dems haven't back down like they did in 2011. I blame part of that on the current administration . They allowed the GOP to use gov't funding and the debt ceiling as a bargaining chip. Now they don't understand why it isn't working.

They really are kids at this point. It's like a child thinking; "Well last time I threw a tantrum mommy gave me a cookie, but now I'm whining and she's not gonna give me a cookie?! What is going ooooooooonnnnn?!?!?!?!?!?! I am gonna whine till I get SOMEthing!!! Waaaaaaah!"

Well the US Treasury can, by law, mint platinum coins in any denomination they choose. So they'd have to come up with a design, like maybe a scribble of a stick person next to an eagle or something, and then hammer that fucker out. Then they hand it to Ben Bernanke, add a trillion dollars to their accounting book, and call it a day.

C'mon.

It's gotta be Boehner. Preferably crying.

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., who is close with leadership, suggested that the House majority is prepared to withhold support for a government funding bill and the debt ceiling increase if Democrats continue to refuse to negotiate a compromise. But Republicans are not going to give Democrats the "clean" funding bill they're demanding, he said.

“Why in the world would you do that?” Cole said of the clean funding bill. “That’s basically, at this point, a surrender to the Democratic position.”
There you have it. A funded and functioning government is clearly the Democratic position.

Here's Harry Reid refusing to entertain any piecemeal spending proposals for critical issues.

Vid title ('Why Would We Want To' Help One Kid With Cancer?), is a bit shitty, but it is technically accurate. Reporters not impressed at all with Harry Reid's answer here. Probably should've avoided the whole "someone of your intelligence" thing.

Obviously Democrats shouldn't cave to piecemeal spending measures right now if they want to hold on, but I don't agree with Reid's, "What right do they have to pick and choose what part of governments can be funded?" ... well, since they are half of the US Congress, they certainly have the right to pick and propose piecemeal spending. They don't get to pass it without the Senate agreeing, but being duly elected federal legislators, they do have the right Harry.

It's like writing a check to yourself, except whether or not it'll clear isn't even an issue because you don't have a bank account.

Harry Reid's point, which he seemingly failed to make, is that the entire conceit of representational democracy relies on the actors involved abiding by an agreed rulebook, even when that rulebook is arbitrary. Shit, because it's arbitrary.

You don't get to fund just the parts of government you like, or the parts that are politically useful for your purposes. You don't get to enjoy government a la carte, or rebuild it using only the parts you find ideologically consonant.

You either agree to govern and legislate according to the oath you swore -- inheriting a continuing project and representing the political will of the people within an agreed framework -- or you secede.

I'm sure foreign investment in the US and the value of the dollar against foreign currencies will be just rock steady after we do that, too. Burning the basement timbers to keep ourselves warm.

Wait. Wait. No. This shit isn't at all arbitrary. It will affect the quality of my life hugely and in ways I can't mitigate against from my current financial position, no matter how hard I work, for who the fuck knows how long. And that's assuming we don't enter unknown nightmare territory.

I meant that the rules and procedure are arbitrary. Obviously the consequences are very, very real.
