US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

What the current situation over there? Does it look like you guys will have the shut down lifted soon?

There's a small but growing number of GOP House members who are catching hell from the people in their districts to end this before it causes real damage to the country. Even most level headed Republicans know this was a bad idea, and continues to be so.

The Republican Party is trying very hard to see if there's a tipping point to its irrelevancy.

The Tea Party does not have that kind of self-awareness or foresight. They are who they are, think what they think, believe they're right no matter, and can't/won't listen to contrary opinions.

We're talking about a modern day Flat Earth Society, for fuck's sake. They're not a political party, they're conspiracy theorists.

May have already been covered in this thread, but what with Obama being president and all that, can he not just say "fcuk you lot" and pass this budget thing anyway?

This article was a breath of fresh and pure ocean breeze after smelling rotten cabbage in a dank and musty room. Even the commentators are civilized and there is no one calling Obama a muslin hitler alien from space.
Great article, thanks for posting it.
This line really stuck with me, for whatever reason:
"If you did not already know what this was all about, reading the news would not help you understand."

It's so true... their role in the process has gone kafka. If you just thought to yourself "well gee, I'm uninformed on the topic, let's just turn on CNN and see what's going on" you would see some kind of battle over ongoing negotiations regarding Obamacare. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to walk away with the impression that this was all about preventing the bill from being signed into law, rather than the petulant, laughably short-sighted hostage situation over existing law that it really is.

There's AN option for the Debt Ceiling (that probably won't be used), but as far as the CR and the budget process in general, he's pretty powerless to do anything beyond the Bully Pulpit...

Bit of a shitter when 30 odd people in the lower house (whatever you call it over there) have more control on this situation that Mr President.

It's pretty crazy that Aljazeera has become the voice of reason in media, but yeah, CNN is useless, especially when they've got staunch conservatives like Blitzer and, my god, Newt Gringrich, on the screen basically telling Boehner's cronies to keep up the good fight.

Liberal media indeed.
This is Al Jazeera America. It's rather new, but has shown pretty consistent journalistic integrity so far. Within the bloc of news-gathering entities with which it directly competes, it will always be the voice of reason (unless we're singling out Rachel Maddow), and there's nothing crazy about it. Whether it will be a financially successful endeavor is another matter of course, but there you have it.

NPR has gotten a bit more teeth on the subject in the past day or two, but I still wish they'd get more aggressive on this.

That said, I still consider NPR to be the finest news outlet in this country.

As long as American media is too cowardly, spineless, greedy and selfish to do their part in informing a democracy, there will be no tipping point.

This act of holding government and nation hostage without a mote of reprecussion from the media simply reinforces their gall to act in as destructive, obfuscative and petulant a manner possible.

I mean, why not? They have nothing to lose and plenty to gain. What is it they want to gain? They don't know. But that's not going to stop them.

In the short term, I agree. But long term? I think they're horribly hurting the party's future. Maybe I'm wrong, but I really, really doubt this is going to play well to younger voters.

Checks and balances and all that. The President actually does have a significant amount of power to strong-arm Boehner under normal conditions, but this isn't normal. There will be repercussions for this idiocy, but they won't be immediate or dramatic.

Is FEMA affected by the current shutdown??

If it is we may have a whole different ballgame in a few days with a possible tropical system hitting the Gulf states.

Even if they were they would be lumped with "essential staff" and be forced to work without pay. Just like CBP , BOP and other agencies.

it would still place additional pressure on the current debate.

I doubt it. If the recent deaths in federal prisons, the deaths of CBP officers and the protection of our borders aren't enough, not paying fema workers to do work they will inevitably be forced to do anyway won't either.

I was watching CNN twenty minutes ago and they had some lady from a military family talking about how both sides need to neogiate and come to a agreement. I don't think she said the word compromise, but it was damn close.

-_-

Obama is destroying this appearance.

Dude needs to hit up Jon Stewart and show up this week.

And what's funny is that the military is getting paid, they need to focus on federal civilians who are furloughed.

So when it comes to raising the debt ceiling, what does everyone think is the likelier option: Executive order or trillion-dollar coin? I know Obama already ruled out the former, but the latter just seems so cartoonish.

I'd prefer a consitution which doesn't allow the elected government to be held ransom by a lower house, if I'm perfectly honest.

I think more importantly, change the rules to not allow a small cabal of the majority to stop a vote that would keep the government open. This is fundamentally undemocratic behavior. The method to go around these people takes way too long and needs to be fixed.

The coin is equally as cartoonish as pretending that bond sales fund the government.

Yeah, it's BS that Pelosi can't bring a bill that WILL pass to the floor. I know about discharge petitions but that can be blocked

This shutdown is predicable because Republicans hate government. I have no idea why run for office if you hate the institution so much?

NPR doesn't produce a whole lot of purely editorial content. It's more along the lines of the tone of their reporting, which I think has gotten a bit more pointed in the past couple of days.

Also, I'm on my phone, which makes posting them a hassle.

They do try to stop poor people from voting.

I think that was his point lol.

But yeah, it should be painfully obvious by now that Republicans hate democracy. It tends to get in the way of their goals considering every single one of their policy stances (with the exception of vague tax cuts) is extremely unpopular among the general public.

Not all military is getting paid. A married couple that I know both work in the military and are furloughed. It's seriously screwing with their financial situation.

Yeah, I've given up doing any form of satire on the internet because of how stupid the real world has taken a complete turn down the road of "let's see what stupid shit we can do before everyone wakes up." I don't even play along now because Republicans have gone so far off the deep end there is no satire that can be written that they haven't done, in real life, with all seriousness attached to it.

Some of sports guys I follow on twitter says that soldiers overseas can't watch baseball playoffs and football due to the shutdown. A soldier tweeted this picture

well, I guess a lot of people are surprised at just how many services the federal government actually provides.
