Why haven't part time jobs cut into the now 1 trillion worth of student debt boom boom, and what do you think should be done about it? Also why were your parents only able to secure minimum wage jobs?
uneducated 1st generation immigrants that came over in the 50s.
the 1 trillion debt is caused by the crash of the US market in 2008. There was a reason why students loans werent mentioned back then. Because people were able to get a job post grad. the jobs would fall into their laps.
now, they actually have to work to get that job.
I'm 26 and I live at home now because I can't find work. I'm still considered independent by the Florida uni system though.
The Florida Public School system doesn't let you use pell grants over summer semesters. There's a limit to how much pell you can use in one semester as well. Couple that with the fact that a lot of my classes are 5 credit hours or more and I'm taking many of them at once, such as University physics with calc, calculus with geometry 1, and chemistry and the pell grant becomes unable to cover all my expenses. I've been making extensive use of ebay and amazon prime for used books, but a lot of these classes want mymathlab licenses or some other pc software. It all adds up and I end up taking out a loan to cover the rest.
You combine that with the fact that Florida was 1 of if not the hardest hit state in the US when the housing bubble popped it get just gets worse. I'd like to think that there being "no jobs" was hyperbole, but there really aren't a lot jobs around the Tampa area. Most of the part time/casual positions got gobbled up by retirees who lost everything when the bubble popped. There was a thing in the news awhile back about there not even being a lot of jobs for summer teens to work.
I'm assuming your from California? Must be nice out there, but the situation your describing just isn't applicable here in Florida. Your trying to apply your own personal success/situation as the rule rather than the exception and its just does not work out like that. I've made a full time job out of applying for scholarships and I have yet to get 1 that paid out more than $100 at best.
wait, if your'e an independent, how are you not qualifying for financial aid? 0 incomes mean you would at worst, get subsidized federal loans (unless you've been in school for longer than 4 years).
And, credit hours should only matter if you're doing school part time no? If it's full time, then you'll just be paying one lump sum for that semester.
as for your scholarships applying, that's pretty unfortunate, another reason why Florida sucks. But, maybe your time is better spent trying to find a job then if the scholarships aren't even paying that much?
The retiree diid not lose everything when it popped, unless they've managed to die in the last 5 years. Because the ones that live, the stock market (and along with their stock earnings), has greatly increase since 2008.
I'm applying my own personal experience because I don't think anything I've had was ever given to me, or that it was easy. I went to school full time, took part time jobs, and like you , did summer classes while working to to graduate on time. I applied to hundreds of scholarships only to get like, 2. And then also going through what, i think 30 interviews, before getting a job after graduation.
Do other people have it worst than me? I'm sure. That's not my point. My point is that all this Gaf talk of education in the uS to be so prohibitively expensive is pretty much only looking at Grad schools and private schools, completely ignoring the public university settings.
Yay, let's talk of the student that did a 3 year law school and came out with no job and a 200k debt and says the US school system needs to be reform without realizing that that has nothing to do with the undergraduate program.
