I'm surprised at how good Arkham Origins Blackgate looks on 3DS.
It's stunning.
Also, Smash Bros. 3DS looks super clean.

Yeah, the upgrade from DS to 3DS was big, just as the upgrade from N64 to GC was big. Going forward portables will start running up against the law of diminishing returns, though, just as home consoles have in the post-PS2/Xbox/GC era.
The hot-linking doesn't work on my end, so I re-uploaded the image on imageshack in case it didn't work for the others either:

I guess Sony won't make another handheld after the Vita.
And Nintendo has still a lot to do in terms of resolution. 3DS's resolution is lower than PSPs. *
I guess the law of diminishing returns won't be a problem for handhelds.
*Thats what a graphical leap combined with a resolution jump looks like. Nintendo should do that with their next handheld.

Thats Wipeout Pure(PSP) vs. Wipeout 2048(PsVita)
At this point it's not really the level of graphics I'm concerned about, I'm concerned about how expensive and time-consuming it will be to make games for the next-gen Nintendo handheld. Developing for the GB/GBA/DS was cheap, but making something that takes advantage of the 3DS hardware is costlier and longer, and it's probably one of the reasons why third-party support has dropped significantly compared to the GB/GBA/DS.
Speaking of COP The Recruit, those guys are working on a 3DS game. Wonder what magic they'll work with the extra grunt?Ubisoft got the best out of the DS hardware with COP the Recruit. I bought the game JUST for the graphics

The 3DS's inability to push 60 fps due to its weak ass CPU kills the impact of the improved graphical capabilities. Even ATV Wild Ride, a straight port of a DS game, saw its framerate cut down from 60 on the DS to 30 on the 3DS, despite its visuals being mostly the same.
RE: Revelations is still the best looking on the system in my opinion. Looks great.

Any guesstimates as to when Nintendo might release another handheld? I've been on the fence about one, but I think I might want to wait until they can do 720p on a handheld and have a unified account system. I understand the latter might be a longer wait, but how realistic is it to have another graphical leap along with native 720p games on a Nintendo handheld?

Uh, of course the jump is big, like it was between N64 and GC.
But 3D was actually what awe me initially.
DS has weak polygonal graphics so it's more likely 2D games that held up better.
Said that here a few example I think could stand well the test of time:

We're probably halfway through the handheld gen if not even less.

After playing a lot of Animal Crossing New Leaf, gave Wild World a go. The difference between the two is amazing. Wild World looks awful.
Came to post this. Wild World not only has a lot of 2D elements and clipping and lacks texture filtering, but also runs like shit. It surprised me a lot, as I've always regarded it as one of the best looking 3D games.
The jump is literally like N64 to GameCube.
I wouldn't say Revelations isn't "coming close" to RE4. Conversely I struggle to think of one DS title that looked better than Ocarina of Time or Conker. It's literally nothing like that at all. The DS can easily outperform the N64, but the 3DS can't even come close to matching the best of the Gamecube.
New Leaf looks leaps and bounds ahead of the Wii AC, but that's probably due to;
1) Advanced lighting & shaders
2) The complete half-arsedness of City Folk

The lava room in RE4 blows away anything in Revelations. Revelations takes place entirely in corridors and tiny environments, limiting its impressiveness.
Okamiden is pretty easily better looking than anyhing on N64, as are most of Square Enix's DS games.
The ds would probably have a hard time getting some of the more detailed 3d n64 games to run decentlyIt's literally nothing like that at all. The DS can easily outperform the N64, but the 3DS can't even come close to matching the best of the Gamecube.

You sure you played it? There are some rather large environments.
Also, graphics =/= power. The 3DS is superior to the GameCube graphically. You could definitely be right that the 3DS is not as powerful, I have no information on that so I can't say yes or no, but the thread title says "graphical discussion," not "power discussion."
So the 3DS can replicate any of these graphics?

(Note: All of these games run at 60 fps on the Gamecube)
Dare you say that in the OT. I got bashed for that opinion.
But I agree, it looks better on 3DS considering hardware. It's the outlines. They make characters look super smooth and it just pops.
I think the Wii U game is less impressive since it looks like Brawl HD. I know they can do more than that, but the game still looks terrific.
Not just the outlines, they look pretty damn smooth, textures look real nice as well. And I did post that in the OT, but it was ignored. And I agree with the Brawl in HD sentiment. But who knows, it might end up looking spectacular by release.
Factor 5 how i miss thee
What i would give to see what they could have done on the WiiU
uh? That title change was really unnessecary... Usually I'm all for mods changing titles of threads when it's a stupid thread but this one just feels like a mod didn't like that people were discussing graphical leaps.
It's a shame the resolution isn't higher. Vita 2D games look soooo good on that screen.3D graphics on the DS were a joke. The 3DS can definitely hold it's own, although i wouldn't mind more 2D sprite based games.
