House Republicans will vote today to give back pay to furloughed workers.
Good news.
The GOP delivers again. Now let's get Obama to the table guys.

Oh yay! Back pay.

Cause most of the people working for near minimum wage for the government can totally afford to wait for back pay.

Also, I remember back when all of the GOP was kicking up a stink because if Obama wasn't harsh with Syria, it would make us look bad.

Federal employee salary disclosure. Lowest I've found listed was a GS02 making $23k, which about what my wife makes as a teacher's aide in a special needs classroom in a public school. As a supporting income that'd be ok, as a head of household it would suck. But, that salary level appears to be the extreme minority .... this is just a random sampling on an alphabetical listing and most of the people I'm seeing are making very good money indeed. Example - veterans health administration custodial workers (janitors) all seem to make more than $30k. Veterans health administration medical officers (doctors) all seem to make over $250k.

Well, considering around 423,000 make less than 50k a year, if they are heads of households, yeah, I can't see them having anything saved up for a shutdown.

My point is is that back pay is nearly a meaningless gesture at this point. There's no way it's NOT going to happen, so trumpeting it as some noble thing is insulting.

It's going to be funny when the new unemployment numbers are released.

edit: And yeah, starting an engine takes a lot more energy than turning it off. Re-starting the government will take so much longer than it took to shut it down.

Because the numbers will go up, and the Republicans won't be able to pretend it's Obama's fault, people (except idiot fringes) aren't that dumb.

They won't go up because of the shut down. They are not considered unemployed.

The UE numbers shouldn't change too much, they don't ever account for bloaty government jobs.

Plus what crazydude said.

Dems are so bad at messaging. They should be hammering away at the fact that a majority in the House want to vote to pass a CR but Boehner won't let them vote.

Reading the saturday newspaper here in the netherlands called Algemeen Dagblad or AD for short and one of the articles says "US are clowns of the world" "Nobody is taking the superpower not serious anymore"

And that shows how dumb those Republicans are and that is not only damaging to the economy of the US but also the rest of the world.

They've been saying that for days now. Obama has said it in every interview hes been in.

They mention it offhandedly. They need to give it context. They need to explain that Reid isn't preventing the Senate from voting -- the Senate votes on what the House is giving them. The House isn't even voting on what the Senate is giving them. That will help illustrate which side is really holding this up.

We have three parts to pass a bill. The president wants a clean CR. A majority of the Senate wants a clean CR. A majority of the House wants a clean CR. It is insane that this story can be spun as "GOP and Dems are both stubborn and can't agree."

edit: also point out that the Hastert rule is mostly used by Republicans -- I haven't yet found an instance where Pelosi used it.

They're not dumb. They actually do want failure for the country if it'll help them regain power

I think the issue is that their views are a lot harder to instill into small, little sound bites

Lower taxes!
Freedom!
Promote Business!
Less Gubermet!
Obamacare job killing freedom killing American killing bill!

Not really sure how you boil down Obamacare or the reason why its so important for the President not to compromise in this situaiton into 5 words or less

Republicans
Obama's not willing to negotiate!

Democrats
We can't negotiate because it will undermine our democracy by destroying the legislative process since one house would be able to hold the government hostage and demand legislative concessions. This would situation would occur every few months because thats when the CR and debt ceiling usually come up.

Just not the same. Republicans usually have a lot more simple message since their ideas are, well, simple.

That's certainly part of it, but Dems don't need to say "We can't negotiate" -- they already negotiated!

"This is a budget bill and the Democrats in the Senate have already compromised by passing a budget using GOP's numbers. The GOP leadership refused to even vote on the budget the Senate has passed, going against the will of 72% of Americans"

The President wants to sign a clean CR. A majority of the Senate passed a clean CR. A majority of the House wants to pass a clean CR. A majority of Americans want a clean CR. Who's not negotiating?

A Democrat soundbite? How about...

"We don't negotiate with terrorists, even if they're Republicans."

Their reply: "Democrats are calling freedom loving Republicans terrorists while they talk with Iran's leaders"

Dems have to keep it classy. They need something that sounds more reasonable than what the GOP is saying, and all it takes is stating the facts in an aggressive way. They can't just sing to the choir -- they have to expose the cognitive dissonance of the right's talking points to disarm them.

Got it down to a tweet:

What happens when nothing really changes and the debt ceiling hits? I don't see Obama nudging and the republicans aren't doing this just to fold anytime soon.

I still don't think it reaches that far. Boehner will allow the vote once the pressure reaches a certain point. A default would pretty much destroy the modern Republican party.

Have we had new polls since Oct 1st? I'm worried the GOP's photo ops and piecemeal bills they've sent to the Senate has eroded some of the lead Dems had going into this. Not sure the pressure on GOP rises unless Dems hold their ground in the polls.

Which makes his hissy fit all the more meaningless. He's just ruining lives and not even proving a point.

The one benefit that may come out of this, for our country and for the republican party, is the defanging of the tea party wing of the republican party. If the shutdown continues until the 17th or so and Boehner brings the Senate passed clean CR plus debt ceiling bill to a vote, the bill will pass with majority democratic support and some republican support. The tea party wing will have lost entirely with no concessions from Obama, the ACA continuing to go into effect, the shutdown will end, and the debt ceiling will be raised, This might mean that republicans in congress will never bend to the will of the tea party wing again.

If only. I still can't believe the Tea Party got even an ounce of power. That level of stupidity just can't be tolerated.

I was more talking about the debt ceiling rise. Even if the government doesn't open back up, the GOP will have the pressure of the everyone on them to prevent a disaster. Unfortunately, yeah if the polls somehow manage to turn against the dems this shutdown could last for a while because Obama (rightfully) isn't budging anytime soon.

But if the polls even out and the blame falls on everyone equally, the Dems lose the leverage they had. The pressure would fall on Dems as well. The GOP is doing everything they can to shift the blame away from them and Dems can't lose this messaging war.

Aw. When the government fails, Colbert helps do the business of the people.

A little sweeter than going up to a park ranger and telling them they should be ashamed of themselves.

Yah, that one would have to be astroturfed. Or maybe it could be actually grassrootsed (yeah right).
