I'm fine with the number of new Pokémon.
We have ~70 all-new species, plus an unknown number of Mega Evolutions (nearly 20 so far), and the possibility of event Pokémon, alternate forms and more Mega Evolutions (in-game or otherwise).
Remember, even-numbered generations (II, IV, VI) tend to have less Pokémon and serve more of an expansion role. In terms of the number of all-new designs, this generation is on par with II and IV when you include the Mega Evolutions. And you
should include the Mega Evolutions, unless you're going to discount, say, the dozens of evolutions like Magmortar, Electivire, etc, which were introduced in Gen IV.
Mega Evolutions also explain the fewer legendaries, since the whole purpose of Mega Evolution is to take popular or under-utilized Pokémon and elevate them to the equivalent of legendary status with powerful stats, abilities and typing. Hence the limitation on their usage -- sort of a formalized version of the rules regulating legendary use in competitions, anyways.
Then take into consideration how you have a strong mix of the previous five generations of Pokémon. For every 6.4 old Pokémon you encounter in the wild, you encounter a brand-new Pokémon. When we're talking 450 Pokémon in the Kalos dex, that's not bad. And that's not even taking into account the Mega Evolutions.
Certain types are barely represented by the new Pokémon, but again, taking a more holistic look at the situation, it makes sense -- there are already plenty of Poison-type Pokémon in the five generations prior, for example, so if Skrelp and Dragalge are among the only new ones, so be it.
Speaking of Dragalge, she is a stellar example of a wonderful new type combination we got -- Poison/Dragon, neutralizing damage from Fairy-types and hitting back with STAB attacks. We got a number of interesting type combinations this gen, including:
- Fairy
- Normal/Ground
- Fire/Normal
- Steel/Ghost
- Dark/Psychic
- Poison/Dragon
- Electric/Normal
- Rock/Dragon
- Rock/Ice
- Fighting/Flying
- Electric/Fairy
- Rock/Fairy
- Fairy/Steel
- Ghost/Grass
- Normal/Fairy
- Flying/Fairy
- Water/Fairy
- Psychic/Fairy
- Ghost/Psychic
And personally, many of these designs are just INCREDIBLE. All three legendaries -- Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde -- are top-shelf. So are (in no particular order) Clawitzer, Dragalge, Goodra, Treverant, Malamar, Pangoro, Talonflame, Diggersby, Gogoat, Pyroar, Meowstic, Aegislash, Noivern, Tyrantrum, etc.
Really, I like every Pokémon in some way. Depending on my mood, I find myself drawn to one, and then another. For example, yesterday I was really digging Avalugg, which reminds me of a glacier combined with an AT-AT. These days I can't get enough of Clawitzer and Dragalge.
So I'm quite happy with this generation's expansion of the Pokémon pantheon. I just want to know if there are more Mega Evolutions, and then I want to see all of the Sugimori art for each and every new design.
