That would be fantastic. But still doesn't quite hit the mark; sounds like I'd still have to reset/breed for local battles. Which honestly, are more important to me. If I'm going to play a faceless Internet opponent, I may as well play a simulator.

There are 2nd evolutions in the forest? I didn't see a single cocoon in the wild... also no, I caught both weedle and caterpie quite early on so they both should be available regardless of version I believe.

The Bunnelby for Farfetch'd trade in Santalune City seems a bit pointless considering you can catch Farfetch'd on the route to the right of the city, unless Farfetch'd are super rare and I lucked out.

Just found a hat and shorts in one of the stores that look suspiciously similar to the ones worn by the female trainer in Black/White....
The trades seem to be easy methods to beat the gym if you don't have the right Pokemon.

Not exactly, I had a double check against the artwork and though they are the same length, colour and have damage to the front it's missing the little spiky bits and the hat was the same style and colour but the white/pink were switched.
Still, they look a bit too similar to be a coincidence.

I think this is the one people use. 3DS only; not XL (also sold out and wowzer at the cost*). 2DS might be easier and cheaper on the technical front due to being a single screen I have no idea if the designer plans one for that system.

Because what is the point in giving you a Pokemon you can easily go and catch yourself? In past games where there has been a trade before a Gym, i.e Onix, Makuhita, Machop, Seedot, etc. the Pokemon in question weren't catchable at this point in the game. However, like I said, it could just be that Farfetch'd is very rare and I got lucky finding one.
