US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

I disagree. I find it highly unlikely Boehner is literally a supervillain.
He probably thinks that worst comes to worst, Obama will use the 14th amendment and he can keep his job, avoid the consequences of default and tear into Obama for his "unconstitutional use of power"

"Reclaim the Republican party" lol, there are three parties now in Washington. Republicans are fucked, they can't undo this. Only for them to safeguard their party is to give in to the Tea Party.

The only comfort I can take in all this is what was said before Obama became president, and which has held true for a decade: Obama's opponents eventually self-destruct.

Boehner is a giant asshole, sure, but I also don't think he's actually an insane supervillain. That's the left-wing equivalent of "Obama is a Kenyan Muslim."

The GOP already absorbed the PR hit from doing this in the first place; there isn't any purpose in ending it before they actually have to do it.
The only reason this is happening is because Boehner's Speakership is effectively already over.

We really do need to nerf farmers.

Hey, don't knock on farmers, we need them for gold.

I don't think even Boehner is that far removed to let a default happen, though it is getting tiresome for him to keep catering to a fringe group so close to the deadline.

So...is it now abundantly clear that the GOP/Tea Party never gave two shits about the ACA?

This whole thing was a sharade to stick it to Obama.

Nothing more, and nothing less.

the speakership is such a thankless job i honestly think boehner couldnt care less about it at this point. not saying he doesn't want the position, but i don't think he'd care if he was bereaved of it. and i don't think any other GOP congressmen are dying to get themselves or somebody else in there

There was a rumor going on a few months ago that Boehner was not going to seek the speakership again.

There was probably a little truth to it.

Of course. I don't think its a stretch at all to say the shutdown is happening because GOP voters personally dislike the president.

With this last news of the vote tonight being cancelled, it seems like even most outlets that were playing the neutral game are stating pretty clearly in headlines that the GOP can't even agree with itself on what to do here. So while that's kind of awesome and makes me feel warm inside, it's also depressing because we are totally going to default now.

What's the over/under on how long it takes for someone to try to formally impeach Obama after we default? This is obviously where at least some of the intent behind is going.

Also Shake would you say you moved here at the best time, or the best time?

I'm sure the GOP already has people ready with the paperwork.

That being said, the people who run the party like the financial system, and will ensure we don't default.

It's clear that Boehner can't pass anything with tea party support unless it's a delay/repeal of Obamacare. Tomorrow he's going to have to put a clean CR/DL on the floor, there's literally no time left for games. And if he does manage to get a tea party bill passed, he'll be forced to pass whatever the senate sends back.

Personally I think Boehner expected his bill to be passed today, and for the senate to amend it late tonight or tomorrow. Thus giving him his out - "we're out of time, we fought as hard as we could, etc."

Again, how in the world are they going to push an impeachment through when they themselves are the ones that had the power to pass the bill and avoid the default? It makes no sense.

This seriously could destroy the GOP.

Last shutdown worked well for them. They won a majority in the house, senate and the white house.

You underestimate the immense stupidity of a large majority of Tea Party/GOP supporters.

The House vote would have been nothing but a symbolic speedbump anyway. If the vote had went ahead, and passed, it would still be rejected in the Senate. This will be resolved by the Senate passing a bill that gets sent to the House and is passed by all Dems + non Tea Party GOP. Everything else has been a waste of time, games and face saving stuff. There won't be a default.

Just use this opportunity to think how far we've come as a society. Only a couple hundred years ago, if a minority political faction decided to abuse governmental power to do something selfish at the expense of everyone else, a giant mob would come and cut everyone's fucking heads off. That doesn't happen anymore.

A real shame...

You underestimate the immense stupidity of a large quantity of US voters.

Did you see the unemployment numbers this month?

Nope, because Obama is keeping them a secret. Must be bad news.

The majority still support Obama and blame the GOP for all of this. The last time the GOP had the President cigaring an intern to use.

What do you think Boehner's motivation was for allowing things to get this far? He could have let a clean CR on the floor for a vote. He wouldn't even need to vote for it or support it. It would have passed with 20 or so moderate Republicans. He could have avoided a PR disaster and moved on to negotiating a budget, but he let it get this far because he hoped to continue leading the republican house as its speaker.

I think he'll do whatever it takes to keep his job as speaker, avoid a primary challenger and not become the whipping boy of the conservative media bubble.

I honestly don't get it. These Tea Party reps/GOP are about to collapse the global economy. Is this not treason? They should be escorted out of the floor in handcuffs for this utter negligence and incompetence .

If anything, there should be a rule that if the government shuts down, all members lose their jobs and elections are held as soon as possible.

Even if that happened every year I still think Congress would be more efficient than now.

Sadly, our founding fathers didn't have the insight to predict that a fringe group of lunatics would actually try to dismantle the country they represent...

Everyone needs to remember that the US has enough cash on hand to pay bills until like November 1st they estimate before stuff starts bouncing left and right. So we won't "default" on any type of obligations until our cash runs out.

Even without worrying about that, interest rates will go up. Stocks will go down. And the economy will still take a turn for the worse. Right when we were recovering.
This isn't good, no matter what.

The only person who cares about Majority of a Majority....is the man elected by a Majority of a Majority.

Last shutdown worked well for them. They won a majority in the house, senate and the white house.

The last shutdown was in 1996, and I don't remember Clinton losing his re-election. Also, republicans lost three house seats that year, and another five seats in 1998 (the worst midterm performance in 64 years by any party not holding the presidency), and then-Speaker Newt Gingrich was forced to resign after getting most of the blame for it.

But the market will completely crash before then, the dollar will be impacted, and our debt will be reevaluated. Let's not pretend nothing bad will happen on October 17/18th...

Fully agreed its just were going to see the inevitable morons on Friday going this isn't bad!

Just wait until everyone's social security checks bounce on the 3rd.

A default isn't going to happen. You seem to forget that the GOP is the party of the CEO's, bankers and mega rich. They are not going to allow a default to happen that would throw their wealth and their backers corporatons into chaos just because the Tea Party group within the party would be ok with that.

It is treason but nothing will come of it. Just like nothing has ever came of exposing our own troops to depleted uranium, or Bush blowing up our own weapons of mass destruction, that we sold to Iraq, to cover his ass.
