US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

Status
Not open for further replies.
Debt ceiling deadline is really more like April now, thanks to Treasury measures.

The thing is, can the Republicans even threaten another government shutdown now? I can't imagine they can go through with it again, especially not a few months after a shut down! They are screwed:p

You are a parody.

Next battle: a shit budget. Prepare for Ryan charts

The system is a parody. There was 0% chance we were ever going to default.

That's how crazy people get into office though. At least vote for the least of all evils.

That only works if you take away the ability of stupid people to elect stupid representatives.

This is a well-considered and provocative analysis of the big picture

Its the same shit we see all the time though

Big ups about danger all the time, until the end when a deal is reached and everything goes on like it did before. Its nothing but a theater.

Not voting put us in this mess. This is a terrible attitude to have. Low turnouts allow for a group like the Tea Party to just buy itself into Congress.

The inverse relationship between education and fertility puts us in this mess. What does voting change if a bunch of inbred hicks in the middle of the country have more kids than you?

Sure, why not?

Nothing to lose now.

Nothing to lose when you've hit the ground, except delaying your attempt to get back up. Two years away from presidential elections, they might want to start thinking abou tthat.

Oh ok. So the Democratic party fringe is racist. I'm glad we agree.
There is racism in every group. You're not making any sort of real point, other than stating the blatantly obvious and then making a false equivalency. If you can point to widespread racism and dog whistling from democrats, do it.

This is a really, really weird analysis, for a whole variety of reasons, but for now I'm just going to observe that your argument assumes that kids are tiny robots you can program to vote the ticket you prefer. In reality the generational impact on votes is enormous.

Perhaps you'd be happier if we just defaulted and plunged into the economic abyss so you could get some kind of weird satisfaction.

I still don't have it at 0%

I had it at 0 when it happened and CNN had this big funny clock on their station like the seconds mattered worth a damn in the first place.

The media and the political system in this nation are a joke. A bunch of rich guys get together to put on a show to earn their pay, and the sheeple are happy when they "Save US at the last second. Its a joke.

Here is one, but the stories go up so fast you can pick almost anyone and lick the salt.

Real talk, this site is fucking terrifying. I had no idea it was this, thorough. This is how insane people get into power, as you see them threatening anyone to be replaced. THey keep fucking score on who is going with them, and who isn't voting the way they want. Its pretty much a bankrolled program that isolates candidates/politicans financially if they vote wrong.

They have signup sheets to just virtually put your name on, and copy *slightly modify* and paste messages to congress. I don't want to say liberals need to do this as well, these tactics only lead to what we are seeing now, but how on earth could you clamp down on this?

The voting/score section is really troubling, especially when you read the content of the votes then the smeared angle. We have to make a declension that you can't lie about bills/codes/laws etc to vote against them. Sort of like Libel for legal documents.

As an outside observer it would've been fascinating seeing a sovereign default of that scale. Really though, was there any doubt a deal would be reached?

So wait, the tea party got the anti-fraud concession?

What the hell? They should get NOTHING. ZILCH. ZERO.

Bring up the anti-fraud stuff in an actual legal manner through the actual government channels if you have a problem with it.

Ugh.

Nothing to lose when you've hit the ground, except delaying your attempt to get back up. Two years away from presidential elections, they might want to start thinking abou tthat.

If anything, this last debacle shows that the hijacked republican party as driven by the te party is incapable of making rational decisions.

I don't put it past them not to go through this again.

And if history is any indication, the government will shut down again at some point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_shutdown_in_the_United_States
It almost seems that once the government shuts down, it keeps shutting down for a few times.

Lol of course they found a deal at the end.

Same shit, different day.

I'll probably never vote again. All of these guys are nothing but actors.

A non-vote is a vote for the status quo, i.e. the bullshit you're complaining about. But yeah, sure, do that.

From what I understand, the anti fraud provision they were given was already in the ACA. Basically they got nothing but can now say it wasn't a total loss.

Yeah, it's kind of like watching a strange species that's different from us and is fasinating but at the same time terrifying if it ever got loose.

Says who?

Have more faith in Americans. We can do better than this.

Says me and I am the ultimate authority!!!

We're not going to throw people on the train tracks because you want to preform a social experiment on society.

A girl walking in front of me to Waitrose today dropped a quarter. A real, US currency quarter. You guys just can't get shot of the stuff fast enough, can you?

This whole crisis was people not doing their goddam job, success is defined by business as usual. That's why this is stupid. Of course the irony is that you want spectacle for the sake of it and then proceed to criticize similar people as "sheeple."

have we not learned anything from the past two elections that even our votes seem to not matter with all the controversy regarding missing ballots, voter rigging?

Im not sure.

I would not think of it as "They". Lets assume the provision is not in the ADA, Im glad it is now. If that was a concession given, then I'm okay with that. It makes for a better legislative document.

okay this is a couple pages late but i feel like i had to post this

Oh ok. So the Democratic party fringe is racist. I'm glad we agree.

yes, you agree that racists are racists; you don't seem to agree that the GOP racist fringe comprises a much larger proportion of the party

Thank you... delicious!

The thing is these people should have to do tis job in the first place.

The mere fact a bunch of rich people can get together and "Represent" entire segments of people is sickening. The system is broke because not a single one of them has any incentive to make things better for the average man.

The NDSP and Bolshevik parties both agree that complete economic collapse and suffering is the optimal way to implement more effective governance.

Its amazing how people get inspiration when they are hungry. A content person never has to rise up.

A non-vote is a vote for the status quo, i.e. the bullshit you're complaining about. But yeah, sure, do that.

If a nonvote is for the status quo then you cant avoid it then.

Interesting, but I think times have changed. Information age and all, I think the impact is felt faster and stronger.

One thing is likely; internal battles ahead for the Republican party, and that can't go any other way than Fun.

edit: Also Carney apparently is saying Obama now wants the immigration reform to be the main issue. This period will radicalize the Tea Party even more. Like I said: Fun!

There's people here more informed than I, but I believe the income level checks for subsidies already existed.

Our political system is such that anyone can run for office. You are free to try.

Hmm, maybe. Who knows...I know that I think the Tea Party people are certifiably insane and will never attempt to predict their behavior on anything other than taking a crazy un-workable conservative position.

I hope you are right about the internal battle for the Republican party. The Republicans have very sadly squandered an opportunity after the 2012 election to re-invent themselves and become a strong, moderate party with sensible conservative economic policy and a moderate stance on social issues. Instead, the tea party completely hiacked it, drank the kool-aid, and now look at everything. disgraceful.

Our political system is such that anyone can run for office. You are free to try.

Long as you have money and are connected with the right people of course.

A content person never has to rise up because he has no reason to. Are you saying that the world should burn just for the sake of it? Are you 13?

The betterment of everyone is not just for the "Sake of it", nor is it the entire world burning.

There's people here more informed than I, but I believe the income level checks for subsidies already existed.

I honestly don't know. Most news pundits didn't think there was. Either way, Im for this so long as it is a simple, easy, and effective.

Don't give a damn if its "concession" or not. Whatever...its better legislation.
