Em using "faggot" in 2013 is more embarrassing than it is offensive.

I mean how would you feel is someone used it here? how do you feel when you see people call something "gay" in YouTube comments?

It's just kinda sad when you think about it. he's 40.

This is pretty much how I feel about the whole thing. :/

Just 'cus he can rap fast doesn't mean he's a good rapper or lyricist for that matter. The "good hiphop"-camp is so divided, some actually like this sort of crap and some of us appreciate more, well, sophisticated stuff. Gangsta' rap was cool in the 90's but that shit got old real fast.

I'm gonna go drink from the well of Rhymesayers now.

people complaining about the lyrics...

you expect a guy that partly built his career off his shock factor/explicit lyrics to be politically correct all of a sudden? you know what to expect from him by now, so what is there to complain about. just SHAT AHP and enjoy, or don't listen to it. Let's spend another 10 pages over complicating everything and taking the joy out of it all.

Can't enjoy shit lyrics spat with annoying delivery over a crap beat.

Did I just describe at least 60% of Eminem's work?

I think need to stop posting on GAF when I'm tired/hungry/pissy...

These kinda posts are pretty lame.

Opinions and all that. But this type of snobbery is what makes a lot of rap threads awful.

The whole oh well this isn't thaaaaat good. Or this sucks because it's not some obscure underground rapper. Is some of the most shitty hipster shit ever.

I never will get why people feel the need to boast almost after not liking something by mentioning something obscure.

You don't like it. Cool. But when you add that last bit it makes you sound like the biggest douche.

This real rap shit is lame as fuck. Macklemore and Waka are both rappers. You just like ones music more than the others. This constant one uppance of fandom is stupid and lame. Your lyrical myrical shit isn't any better or worse than swag rap.

Fuck

I liked this quite a lot. But then again, I also liked Berserk quite a bit (except that one was for the beat, and this one for the lyrics).

I'm also a huuuuuge fan of DRE's 2001 album with stuff like What's the Difference, Still Dre and many others... wonder what you guys think about that one :/ It's probably my favorite or almost favorite rap album.

Big fan of 2001, lots of good-great tracks on that CD

I agree that beat and chorus is not that great, but I love the lyrics themselves. the thing about odin and thor. wow. There is actually hiphop and effort into this song.

You can't say that about a lot of mainstream rap today.

Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
Can't really dig the production, just not my style, but the man's brain is clearly still stuffed with great rhymes

I like the intro to the third verse..
The way I'm racing around the track, call me Nascar, Nascar
Dale Earnhardt of the trailer park, the White Trash God
Kneel before General Zod this planet's Krypton, no Asgard, Asgard
So you be Thor and I'll be Odin, you rodent, I'm omnipotent
Let off then I'm reloading immediately with these bombs I'm totin'
And I should not be woken
I'm the walking dead, but I'm just a talking head, a zombie floating
But I got your mom deep throating
I'm out my ramen noodle, we have nothing in common, poodle
I'm a doberman, pinch yourself in the arm and pay homage, pupil
Packed quite a bit of pop culture into that, rofl

This. The guy recited one of the most controversial lines of his carreer on this track to see if he could get away with it and you are worried about him talking about faggotts?

you are playing right into his hands and you dont even realise. Nobody should be offended at anything em says at this point. Its what made him the star he is. He feeds off it.

OMG WTF That's disgusting!!!1! How dare you use such a word!!one1!

Seriously though, people over react over the stupidest things. Me and my mates use that word all the time just to greet each other.

Well you can't really tell someone not to be offended if they are, it's just that it's obvious why he does that at this point.

Yeah, you can't tell someone not to be offended that's definitely true and people have a right to feel however they want. The problem is that people think them being offended...how do I put this....matters? Someone, somewhere is going to be offended no matter what you say these days.

90's Gangsta Rap is still pretty good. The beats are amazing and the flow in some of the songs are pretty dope. I listen on my way to work everyday to some DPG and Cube. My rap car isn't any ordinary rap car. It's a gangsta rap car.

Which is understandable, but the issue is it was censored fullstop first time round, clean or dirty.

Yeah, happened with that lawyer's name in Marshall Mathers and that bit about abortion in Hailie's Song too IIRC, probably for different reasons though.

You just reminded me of Swifty McVay's Retro Hip-Hop, now I'm going to listen to that all day. XD

I just get uncomfortable when people use the word tbh, if anything it seems childish to me. As kids everyone just threw that word around as an insult without thinking at all.

Just because you call all your friends by the term doesn't mean everyone has to like it.

I don't dislike the song, I just find him using that word a little embarassing and uncomfortable.

Thinks his PR is better than yours.

You and your mates sound pathetic. I'd say get new friends, but you sound like part of the problem.

Are you 12?

Its crazy, Jay's 43, Em's 41, and Nas is 40.

We're all getting old.

That was real good. Eminem's rap just isn't my style though, I'm more into the poetic side and thats why an artist like Blu is probably my favourite hip hop artist.

"Naïve as the dry leaves on the ground
Lookin' past the tree to the blue sky askin':
Why me?"

Haven't heard an album from 2000's better than Blu's below the heavens. Too bad he's extremely inconsistent

This is such a rare but great post. Never get enough of these types in music or any threads discussing very subjective topics.

And this is the complete opposite of the post above.

Its not just the rap fast. His flow throughout is amazing and it switches up constantly. There is no "good hip hop" camp. Everyone has varied tastes and what you may consider crap others may consider awesome. And all rappers have songs that are purely constructed to show off technical skills. This is what Rap God is. Its just Em showing off his flow(s). To act like he hasn't had sophisticated or deeper songs in his career is just idiotic.

And how is this gangsta rap? Or do you make a complete random point unrelated to what you were saying about Em?

Haha, I was just about to post this. Listening to Relapse again is an eye-opener. Yes, the delivery is annoying; yes, the lyrical content is repetitive and absurdly misogynistic. But, holy crap: Eminem's actually rapping coherently instead of just shooting off punchline after punchline. He still sounds like an artist. His flow and rhyming are impeccable. And the beats aren't pop songs clumsily assembled into rap beats. They're actual hip-hop beats.

I totally get why people were disappointed with Relapse, and why "Not Afraid" was so refreshing. I felt the same way. Most of my favorite Em songs are the reflective ones, and there wasn't much of that on Relapse. But Recovery as a whole is mostly unlistenable to me. It's 90% random punchlines.

I'm also relistening to The Eminem Show. Damn, this album is fucking good. The most mature album Eminem's done, and definitely as good as MMLP. Not much Slim Shady persona at all on the album, just Eminem reflecting on a broad range of issues, from the war on terror to his own career. Eminem did an excellent job producing too; It's a very big-sounding album, which is a rarity in hip-hop.

Oh, and Soldier puts Rap God to shame.

Great post! I've been thinking the same thing but couldn't articulate it properly. But what does Solider have to do with Rap God?

The worst thing that happened was Em thinking people hating "accents" meant hating everything Relapse was. He is rhyming his ass off but without screaming or doing some really bad punchlines. Some of the humor was forced on Relapse but the production was great and if only he eliminated the accents. Instead he took it as a total rejection by fans and critics and completely went into a different zone.

Still hoping that MMLP2 is at least a mixture of 2-3 different styles. If anything I just want to hear some quality Dre beats. First three songs have been Rubin, DJ Khalil, and I am assuming Em himself for Rap God. No Dre yet.

Coming right up!

hahah

I have never once seen it used referring to a gay person. See the south park episode.

Have you not heard much of Em's music then?

I'll just paste what I said in the gafhop discussion on this:

.. someone saying they'll bound and torture someone isn't really harmful in the sense that saying that doesn't do a whole lot, whereas shooting slurs out is itself the problem.

He was asking talking about real life interactions between people which is what he was asking about.

Sorry, didn't trace the conversation back far enough. But you understand that using the word in reference to gay people is only part of the problem with using the word right?

Not a greeting but people use it all the time at each other and I have never once seen it used referring to a gay person. See the south park episode.

I have to agree with you on this. I use it with friends and hear it all the time but anytime it's a room where someone slipped and said it where they don't know even just one person they say "I hope you're not offended by that" (more out of fear of loss of job). I have never once heard it used explicitly toward someone being gay.
Like you said watch the south park episode or listen to Louis CK.

does every shitlord use louis ck and south park to justify their shitty behavior?

like seriously, what made you guys think it would be a good idea to learn about social issues from comedians and cartoons?

Ugh I hate how South Park is considered some bastion of credibility on so many issues and I don't even have a problem his random use of the word. Stop trying to hide behind other people's logic and just say you don't give a shit if it offends someone else.
