PC: The Largest Threat to Next Gen Consoles (according to Gametrailers)

Gametrailers latest countdown discussed the Top 10 Next-Gen Challengers with PC being listed as the single greatest threat to the success of the PS4 and Xbox One.

Here is the link:
http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/o53pra/gt-countdown-top-10-next-gen-challengers

The complete list:
10. Social/Browser Games
9. Ouya (If it ever catches on)
8. Apple (potential console)
7. IOS/Android
6. Amazon (potential console)
5. Wii U
4. Steam (including Steam OS)
3. Media Diversions (specifically Films/Television Shows)
2. Last Gen
1. PC

Surprised that their was no mention of the Oculus Rift...

As stated in the video, the promise of modding, open-ended systems, upgrade-ability, and complete control over customization/controls/IQ/etc is a huge, huge plus for PC gaming.

I wouldn't say it's a threat to console gaming, but it definitely is competition and forces console makers/devs to stay on their toes, at least to a certain degree (which is great). Throw in Oculus Rift and some other advancements, and PC gaming is looking better than it ever has.

I'm a console gamer, but if the steam box makes going PC easier/cheaper on my TV then I'm all for giving it a shot. PC has some great exclusives of its own, but nothing that matches the best the consoles have to offer imo.

At the beginning of this gen I didn't care about PC. At the end of the gen that's all I gamed on. I'm all for PS4 but if theres issues or something I'll just stick with PC.

Well if there is any real threat to the consoles (or more specifically a threat to potential revenue streams of large third party developers) I'm sure they will use their leverage to "persuade" major media outlets to publish numerous "PC gaming is dying/dead" articles in am attempt to restore the status quo.

Of course it is. PC is a next-gen platform without the restrictions. Why not play on it?

I didn't read the article yet, but I think it's being said (by more than just GT) because of how much easier it will be to make multiplat games without just doing shitty ports due to how much more similar both of the new consoles are to a PC. If developers are not simply doing half-assed scrap jobs and the PC gets the same releases at, or close to the same launch as the consoles, the only reason to care about the consoles is for ease of use and exclusives.

edit: Just watched the video. Talking about Halflife 3 being a PC/Steambox exclusive is just silly. Did anyone really buy a PC or stay strictly PC because of HL or HL2? I don't even know why that is considered a factor at all. Same thing with Portal and Left 4 Dead.

This is a sad thing but very true...

People who aren't interested in something aren't interested in something. You might as well put stuff like exercise, sports and cars on this list to go along with the media diversion category.

What a shitty list where they list things that hadn't been announced. They even list Ouya lol.

Well the Ouya was outselling the Xbox One on Amazon Canada for a while before the 180s.

At least that's what I heard, feel free to prove me wrong though.

I don't think PC and PC actually compete for anyone other than the core audience, even with SteamOS they're not going to win over the CoD/Fifa crowd that is, sadly, the majority of gamers. for instace I will be having PS4/Steam/WiiU combo, not everything needs to compete.

I get my PS4 in 4 weeks, but I will keep buying PC games.

There are some games that will be on PC/current gen but not on the PS4. I don't want to invest any more money into current gen, so that money goes to PC versions.

Surprised that their was no mention of the Oculus Rift...

Isn't Oculus Rift more of a peripheral than a rival? Like it is primarily used with pc gaming, but it isn't something that Sony or Microsoft can't add support for.

Ouya being on the list invalidates Gametrailers opinion on anything and everything

They must have guessed the PC correctly by accident

Just cancelled my Xbox One preorder I have had since the console was announced, the reason being I built a gaming machine about a month ago and after the last month of playing around with it, it really does feel like a next gen type machine right now. Will get an Xbox down the road when they drop in price but for now I am more than happy with my PC.

That's correct. The Rift doesn't run games, and is in fact more of a compliment to whatever you use to run games, most definitely PC.

Who's to say in the Rift won't support it's own OS in the future? But for now, it's not a contender against Next Gen as much as it is a Monitor with which one can experience Next Gen.

I mean it wasn't even mentioned when they discussed PC Gaming. If the Rift catches on and for some reason is only available for the PC, that will surely pose a substantial threat to these consoles.

Not mobile?

I don't really think mobile gaming would be a huge threat, mostly because mobile devices are better suited for more casual gaming experiences. There's a lot more overlap when it comes to the game libraries of consoles and PCs than there is when it comes to consoles and mobile devices. Mobile devices may pull casual gamers away but they can't fully replace consoles at this point in time.

PCs have enough power, dev support, and input methods in place to be used in the place of a console fairly often.

PC gaming really is a huge threat to the success of next-gen consoles. With the amount of innovation happening in the PC space it's really hard to make a compelling argument for the necessity of a console purchase. The PC industry has been aggressively working towards closing the gap between PC and console gaming in terms of ease of use (Steam, Geforce Experience/Gaming Evolved) and comfy couch gaming (Big Picture, streaming, Steam Machines) while at the same time pushing for more innovation that is tangibly improving gaming (Oculus Rift, G-Sync, Steam Controller) and bringing along all the traditionally cool PC features (modding, upgrades, customization, cheap game prices, free online, tons of exclusives).

At the same time the overwhelming majority of third-party games are also released on PC, while consoles have done nothing to close the gap with the PC as they remain locked-down, non-upgradeable platforms. The only arguments in favor of consoles are exclusives (if you really want to play specific games) and price (which could evaporate if Steam Machines can go low enough).

All forms of alternative entertainment are a threat to any particular form of entertainment. And substitute vehicles for any given form of entertainment from the status quo will obviously be a threat.

That being said, I find these discussions about PCs, mobile or micro-consoles being a massive threat to the traditional console segment just fundamentally misunderstand the mindset of the mass market and why they buy consoles. The degree of such threat seems grossly exaggerated.

PC gaming is dangerous moreso this gen because of the shrinking casual console buyer base. Unless there's another big casual draw for the XB1/PS4, they'll be fighting for slightly different shades of the same group of hardcore gamers.

If things like Mantle and SteamOS take off, it'll be even more of a threat.

But those marketing dollars and the lower barriers to entry will still be huge pulls towards consoles. MS and Sony just need to make sure they can put out new games with the same pull as the Halos and Metal Gear Solids of the past.

Like you said, with the amount of money poured into marketing for the consoles, PC isn't really a threat.
PC gaming should continue to grow though, since the cost to make a decent rig has fallen and since it should only get cheaper in the future.
With the large amount of funds poured into console marketing, PC is really not a threat.

Always can count on a doomsday article weekly in the gaming world

PC kills console gaming

But didn't PC get killed by console

Killception!!!

JRPGs mostly.

It happens to have two of the best of this gen. That is, if you actually count those games as JRPGs like many around here want to...

PC gaming aside from MMORPGs and specific FPS/RTS was rather "dead" in terms of quality releases for a pretty long while until maybe the past four or five years where it slowly improved.

Not so much for you to do on anything outside of the 3DS and a little Vita time, then.

Here's a tip: Next time you make that comment, you should note that you're interested in only one genre. You've come off as a bit thickheaded so far.

And even then, it's not like the genre is absent on PC. Underserved, increasingly less so, but not absent. This time next year, it will have more releases than any platform outside of the 3DS.

Dunno about that - there's a decent amount of JRPGs on PS3.

Well, sorry if I sounded condescending but how else do you respond to a condescending post in the first place?
