3 men push over 200 million year old rock formation in Goblin Valley.....(video)

The reason those rock formations are special is because they were made that way over millions of years. And the formations themselves are really unique.

Far longer than humans have even existed on the planet.

Except it's not. A good equivalence would be moving any rock from one side of your yard to the other. Nothing in nature gets hurt from these rocks falling over, the only reason people are mad is because these rocks were really good at not falling over and now they're not upright anymore. I'm not even saying the guys should have done it, but the outrage of some rocks being slightly different then they were yesterday is ridiculous.

Last year my family and I took a tour through one of the Oregon caves national parks. It was an incredibly, startlingly beautiful experience. The rock formations deep in the caves were crazy. Our guide pointed out all the places idiots had vandalized or destroyed parts of the cave, even though it was a felony to do so. It wouldn't take long for the place to be completely destroyed - an absolute national treasure, stolen from future generations, because people just moved "rocks". Rocks that had been there and formed over millions of years.

That kind of wanton destruction should be punished pretty harshly. If not, places like this simply won't exist for future generations to enjoy.

I consider environments in their natural state to be inherently valuable. Do you? So from my perspective, any man-made change reduces the value of that area.

I'm not going to say they should be jailed or heavily punished like some are advocating in this thread, but you won't see me trying to claim that what they did wasn't wrong.
People are calling for their deaths, literally.
Fine em for disturbing a landmark but jail time is insane

Exactly. A fine isn't going to deter idiots from being idiots and ruining things for everyone else.

Perfect time to make an example out of these plebs and throw the book at em. If acts like these dont go punished to the fullest it just shows that people can get away with stupid shit and receive just a slap on the wrist.

We should crucify jay walkers too
If they don't use the crosswalk, yes.
crosswalk4jsf9.png
Let's just hope the attorney general or whatever is set loose by the state to put charges on them is rational.

Dicks. They could have lasted 200 million more years.

Oh well, make them push boulders up a mountain for a few years. You fuck nature, nature fuck you!

If they're jaywalking in an area that has big signs saying "No jaywalking under penalty of crucification", then yeah, guess we should.

They just pushed over a rock that would have fallen on its own in a few years anyway. It happens all the time. It's called erosion, look into it.

It's not like they dropped a bomb that leveled the entire site.

Good to know youre sensible
Lol, just saying that the laws in national parks are very strict. Once you step in there things are very protected.

Most people are on the world, not in it-- having no conscious sympathy or relationship to anything about them-- undiffused separate, and rigidly alone like marbles of polished stone, touching but separate.

When we tug at a single thing in nature, we find it attached to the rest of the world.

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.

One learns that the world, though made, is yet being made; that this is still the morning of creation; that mountains long conceived are now being born, channels traced for coming rivers, basins hollowed for lakes.

God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools.

There's no such thing as God brah.

This thread is blowing my mind.

People supporting those morons and people downplaying other historical sites being vandalised. Oh and conversations on how God doesn't exist.

Fucking :lol

No one is supporting pushing rocks off little cliffs or whatever the proper term for these formations is. But jail time for something this harmless? Lol please, i certainly hope youre not like some of these people calling for their deaths

How many people in this thread are actually calling for jail time? Can you not for a second just realize that some people actually care about vandalism at this level?

No one should be defending those dumb fucks, but people are insane for thinking they deserve to go to prison for this. Do those idiots really deserve to get raped all day just for knocking over that rock?

Well, that escalated quickly...

Obviously they deserve punishment, maybe a small sentence of five days. But that wouldn't teach them anything.

Maybe a community service order where they have to repair vandalised sites in national parks for a few weeks.

They did something dumb and selfish over a misguided sense of being helpful.

Ofcourse there should be jail time. He is destroying national treasures and also if its true about the lawsuit then he should definitely stay there for a long time.

Is the concept of a national park so weird for people? Yes, you're legally obliged not to move one rock two feet from its place. Not break of a single branch. That's the whole thing about these places. They have been chosen to be left free of human interference. And the law says so. And like any other law, if you break it you pay.

I don't support jail time either. People tend to act like jail is some sort of magic wand that will somehow fix these people and deter others like them. Jail will not make these people less stupid. What would work better is a fine and a ban from all national parks.

I hate to repeat myself by why can the rock just be put back? Bill the idoits for what it costs to re balance the rock and ban them from the park done

You had three adults there, you would figure one of them to be smarter then the rest, nope. They just let muscles do it and high five him.

And nothing of substantial value was lost.

There are hundreds of these formations in the valley, right?

There are thousands. The point, mentioned in this thread, is that if this behavior is not punished, knocking over the hoodoos (goblins) might become a thing for dipshit tourists to do. The cave stories are good examples of how people have a tenancy to vandalize and steal if they are not enforceably told not to. Most caves have a rock they let people touch to show how the oils on your hands will stain the rock black, as many people touch it over time. Each formation is unique. If you don't understand why these protective measures are in place, you might have some rocks in your head.

Isn't there some kind of law against altering the landscape of a national park? Seems like there should be.
Its a state park.
from the park's brochure:

Not sure what law will be applied, the utah.gov site and search engine kind of sucks. I feel like I'd fall down the rabbit hole on a Nexus search trying to find similar cases. I'm curious if it has any impications for mining companies, and if that would be reason to lessen the punishment.

Climbing on these rocks is allowed. Touching these rocks is allowed. Maybe the park needs to change its policies if these rocks are so precious.

Is that what you saw in the video?

edit: and for the caves, its more about touching a mineral formation. Stalagmites, mighty growing up -- stalactites hold tight to the ceiling, can stop growing if touched repeatedly. The oil on your hands prevents new layers of minerals to be deposited (if my memory is correct). The hoodoos are exposed to the elements, so as they do erode [and] any oils could feasibly slow the process (keeping water out of the rock and cracking with expansion). the thing is, if they roped off the main attraction -less people could be encouraged to visit. It is a tourist attraction and the purpose is to have as many people possible come and enjoy the scenic landscape - a very unique landscape - and spend money for the state of Utah.

Are you just trolling? Can you elaborate on your position?
