EDGE: "Power struggle: the real differences between PS4 and Xbox One performance"

But that's not what Crytek admitted. They categorically said it was 900p all along. Personally, I don't really care about that number itself, but this smells fishy. :/

This was the footage that has me confused as well. Didn't it have a watermark that said actual in-game footage?

EDIT: Correction. It says "This does not represent final game quality". LOL. Smart! Who would have thought it would be lesser! :D

I'm very interested to see what Ryse will look like upon release

There is a separate thread discussing this topic alone. You will find all kinds of opinions in there.

In short, yes, 720p vs 108p is quite a noticeable difference. GG actually ran focus tests on volunteers to understand their sensitivity to resolution vs frame rate. Resolution came on top. We are far from reaching diminishing returns for resolution. 900 to 1080p may be a small jump that may go unnoticed by some, but 720p should be a lot more noticeable.

Now, should that take priority over other aspects of gaming? It's complicated and I haven't made up my mind. I've tried debating on both sides of that fence. What I can say is that we have reached a point where most of us have invested in full HDTVs. It is only reasonable that we expect them to be fully utilized.

Thanks for the link and the summary. I'm with you here. I was mostly playing "Devil's Advocate" if only because I haven't made up my mind on this issue either. And I agree with you 100% from an emotional and monetary investment standpoint, it'd be nice for the console industry to *finally* standardize on 1080p since most of us have at least one (if not several) such HDTVs in our households nowadays. Regardless of whether the difference is always really that noticeable, my consumer psyche wants to feel like I'm maximizing my TV without having to hook up my HTPC. I'll check out that link.

To be fair, the 1080p video released by Crytek says right on it that it's not representative of the game. The only other misleading media has been native 1080p screens, but promo shots have been inaccurate this way for lots of games, for decades. There's a thread on GAF currently about a "PS4 screenshot" of NBA 2k14 that's rendered at far higher res than PS4 will attain. These things are unfortunately common.

The NBA2k one seems more like a res for print.

Any news on BF4 resolutions? It's looking like 720p vs 900p. All the XB1 demo's have been 720p from what we're hearing. Is this a sign of things to come?

According to Cboat it is. But it could change as they improve tools and optimisations etc.

This is the big question isn't it? How soon can MS improve their tools? Cause right now we have what is clearly a power gap + dev tools not up to the task of helping developers utilise the eSRAM

And a custom built PC would shit on a Steambox for the same price. I don't know why would anyone pay extra for that.

Yeah, don't understand the desire to buy a steambox. The OS is free if you are really interested and you can build mini itx builds without the premium.

Firstly from what I've read that's not an article really detailing the specs or power behind either console so not sure this is the right thread for it

Secondly there's a lot of silly things said in there. For instance

The company has worked hard to be seen to match Sony on every level, and in some respects may have even surpassed its competitor.

Then why is netflix still behind the gold paywall?

#NOPAYWALLFORMEDIA

Also stating this as the truth rather than the authors opinion is a bit misleading

Microsoft’s exclusives are more convincing than anything Sony has shown on PS4 to date. Killzone is no Halo; DriveClub, now delayed, never looked like measuring up to Forza; and Dead Rising 3 now looks like a smarter bet for open-world mayhem than Second Son

Don't even get me started on this one

Even a second-tier title like Ryse makes a stronger case for its host hardware’s graphical capabilities, at least, than anything set for PS4’s launch day, while no next-generation multiplayer game can match multiplayer game can match Respawn’s work on Titanfall – an exclusive secured with Microsoft’s financial backing, and a game utterly reliant on the company’s cloud to synchronise its AI and provide dedicated servers as and when needed.

Even though it's on both PC and X360 as well and looks more and more like it doesn't have cloud compute for those versions

Yeah it pissed me off the way that guy was talking about exclusives being better as if it's a fact. That is absolutely subjective

Yet Sony came dangerously close to a perfect PR campaign while Microsoft was busy making mistakes. Those areas where it had the edge, however, have been eroded by Microsoft’s policy shifts. Today, PlayStation 4’s most visible advantages lie in price and power, and on the latter point, many observers claim that the difference isn’t as pronounced as was once suggested – at least when viewed in balance.

“[PS4’s] DDR5 is basically 50 per cent more powerful than DDR3,” says Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev. “But the memory write is bigger on Xbox One. So it depends on what you’re doing. PS4 is more powerful, but you can’t just write to the memory, you need to read sometimes.”

How does Xbox have 'bigger' memory writes? And lol at 'in balance'

What really bums me out after reading that is that I would have been so on board with the X1 had they only did these things differently:

-No anti-consumer DRM and used games bullshit from the getgo
-No Kinect camera in the box (or at least multiple SKU offerings--one without Kinect)
-Apps not behind Live paywall
-Sold for $299 or $350

What I described above would have been an amazing value and pro-gamer, and I am sure they would have dominated at least the US market.

Holy shit, were Edge of all gaming journalism outfits seriously bought over by MS? I know they're not what they used to be but they still had some integrity.

Edit: Once again Yudintsev praises the PS4's simultaneous crossplatform updates. This goes against the reason given for why Planetside 2 isn't crossplatform(they said it was because they can't do simultaneous crossplatform updates).

Are they on crack, Dead Rising looks better than Infamous SS, and Ryse looks better than Killzone SF.......

Oh man.

Edit - Oh, I see it's from their MS feature in the magazine a month or two back. Have to given them a few positive quotes in return for access to MS execs.
