If you just want to know if you have maximum IVs, you can check your Pokemon with the guy on the left in the Kiloude City Pokemon Center.
If you have a stat "that can't be beat", you should have a perfect IV. It's actually pretty easy to get 4 or 5 max IVs compared to previous generations because of Friend Safari Dittos.

Yeah, but the thing with FS is that every Pokemon from there has like either 2 or sometimes 3 prefect IVs.
Plus, I hear you can use the cute-charm trick to make it more likely that you will get w/e gender which, for some people and some Pokemon, would be a big deal.
I guess they both have their ups and downs. Breeding allows you more control over the nature (100% w/e nature you have hold the everstone. Not sure if Synchronize has been beefed up from 50% yet) and IVs but it takes far longer and there's no way to influence the gender of the baby with eggs. Also, I think hidden abilities are far more common in FS. I got 2 Magician Braixen out of the 3 I snatched up and a Protean Froggy that I gave MiCh for his Trex and that was the first/ only Frog I got so far.

Well, I got a Ditto with 4 31 IVs in Friend Safari and Synchronizing a Pokemon from Friend Safari with the missing 2 IVs. Then I breed the Ditto(holding a Destiny Knot) and the Friend Safari Pokemon(holding an Everstone).

I still haven't figured out 'why' people would trade the legendary ones, can't you only get one per game and you can't duplicate them anyway can you?

People that still have the game will import them and you'll be able to trade with them, don't worry
Some people (like me) don't care about Legendaries since they are mostly for dex completion (the ones that can't be used competitively, at least), so thy might not care about trading them away.

Ah, I gotcha. That makes sense. I never really looked at competition all that much so didn't know you couldn't use them. They've always been my favorite in the games. I was hoping to trade some bred starters and dinosaurs, but I don't see people wanting those anymore, lol. Had to strike while the market was hot!

If I wanted to breed a pokemon with a specific nature is it completely random, or will having one of the parent pokemon with the same nature increase my chances? Is the species always the same as the female pokemon? Completely new to all this stuff.

Bleh, looks like i am actually going to have to do this Pokemon Amie nonsense. Amount of times my attacks are evaded online is ridiculous.

There's a mini XY tournament this Friday at my university that I kind of want to play in.
What are some of the best Pokémon this gen? I know I can expect to see Blaziken and Charizard in abundance so I am trying to think of counters for the more popular Pokémon while still building a good team.
I have no idea what the rules are since the announcement of it was pretty vague and spontaneous so right now I've been tentatively planning on about 4 Pokémon.
I've got Florges, Aegislash, Mega Banette, and Clawitzer. Not sure how well they'll do, though.
Any suggestions?

You can equip an Everstone on a parent and then all children will have the nature of that parent, otherwise it should be random.
