There's a mini XY tournament this Friday at my university that I kind of want to play in.
What are some of the best Pokémon this gen? I know I can expect to see Blaziken and Charizard in abundance so I am trying to think of counters for the more popular Pokémon while still building a good team.

I have no idea what the rules are since the announcement of it was pretty vague and spontaneous so right now I've been tentatively planning on about 4 Pokémon.

I've got Florges, Aegislash, Mega Banette, and Clawitzer. Not sure how well they'll do, though.

Any suggestions?

Expect lots of Blaziken and Aegislash. Lots.

On a more positive note, Metagross just justified his position on my team forever. Enemy player with Mewtwo, Yveltal and Xerneas was ripping me apart, but Metagross saved the day and took down all 3 lol.

Get rid of tackle as it's a worthless move.

Vine Whip will hit neutral matchups harder because of the STAB bonus, even with the lower base power.

I feel like almost everybody has access to either a Dark or Fire move to KO though and its super slow. I don't know anything about competitive pokemon... so it probably best to ignore me.

The only problem is that it can tank things pretty well when it is Defense Mode.

I mean, it is pretty predictable switching between Defense and Attack mode and it is silly crippled when hit with a status element since King's Shield doesn't block them.

Alakazam.
Mega Evolve it into MegaZam, this gives you trace and ability to gain Blazikens speed. Then you can OHKO it with Psychic. Works all the time.

The glory of its ability and movepool is that it's not terribly bothered by that, and in shield forme it's got the defenses to handle a hit or two.

2 people named Zach with normal Pokemon. Only one has the Dittos ha. Still though, thanks to both. It's just registered me on your 3DS and you can bet I'm farming the hell out of Dittos right now.

I expect that once PokeBank comes out, the tension will ease off as most of us will import from Black/White1/2 or have perfect Pokemon to trade over. Thanks again dude.

as far as i know, eevee only evolves into leafeon in the grass surrounding the moss-covered rock in that route, south of the 8th gym. you'll have to trade for one or wait until then. i suppose you could attach a rare candy to it, trade to someone who has that area accessible, get them to use the rare candy and evolve it there, and have them trade it back.

I tried to do the E4 with new monster-only team, but I had to make an exception for Mawile because it's ~*~shiny~*~.

Good battle. I did a mock battle with both you and the guy you faced... ended up having to use a fourth Pokemon to win. Tyrantrum did a number on me on your side, and Greninja got its hits in on your opponents' side. But of course it's faster than Delphox.

I've had good success online with Flygon against those two. Earth Power/Earthquake and Rock Slide destroys them along with opposing Aegislash. Add Draco Meteor and Fire Blast/Flamethrower while holding a White Herb for maximum super-effectiveness. My EV'd Arcanine cleans up what survives.

Primeape is boss. Don't let his lack of buffed stats stop you.

Anyway, finally made it to Xerneas. Now that I've gotten used to RNG abuse, I'm not settling for anything less than 30-31 in all stats. Looks like I'll be here a while

Males pass on hidden abilities too, even with Ditto. Pairing an Imposter Ditto with a non-hidden ability Pokemon will NOT generate a child with a hidden ability.
