"Lots of PS4 game reviews coming in the next two weeks but not Xbone"

Currently he's not wrong about The Last of Us not out-selling Uncharted. Weren't the last numbers around the 3 million mark? Still not anywhere near the stupid 500k number he mentioned though.

It certainly far outsold Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 in NPD, first-month. It also almost definitely outsold Uncharted 3 in NPD, first-month, as Sony said it was the 2nd highest debut month after God of War III.

Overall/long-term sales is a harder thing to judge, but that's not what he was talking about either.

So far TLoU is at least as strong as Uncharted commercially. (That is something I certainly would not have predicted. Perhaps it's the stronger install base and game drought that did it. Or maybe great hardcore-gamer marketing.)

Normal Person: The sky is blue.

Arthur Gies: There's a vocal minority saying that the sky is blue and not green. Sure.

NP: What? The sky is clearly blue.

AG: I'm so glad that the hyperbolic Internet really thinks that the sky will be blue tomorrow.

NP: Why "tomorrow"?

AG: Can't say anymore. GAF is probably already melting down.

NP: Well yeah, because the sky is blue and not green.

AG: If you're an entitled Pokemon Blue fanboy who can't accept green.

NP: What? I never even mentioned...

AG: We'll see. Maybe. You might be surprised.

THE NEXT DAY

NP: Sky's still blue, brah.

AG: Is it? (link to photo of grass)

NP: That's grass. Do you know what "the sky" is?

AG: I know what your harassing buddies insist the sky is, and bully anyone who says otherwise. Blocked.

People are still talking about Geese? Come on, at this point everybody knows he's an utter joke. Dude has the art of being wrong down to a science, I'm amazed he's still employed.

I like how the latest trend in game journalism is tweeting, "I just heard a MEGATON but I can't say anything yet!", which invariably leads to rampant and irresponsible speculation, followed by a reveal which is inevitably something minor or irrelevant.

Meanwhile, the insiders just post a thread and infodump everything up front.

In short, fewer journalists being spoon-fed tidbits by marketing/PR which they then dangle on twitter, and more insiders committing wanton acts of corporate espionage... please.

That trend might stop if people stopped making NeoGAF threads based on vague tweets by reporters. Just saying!

Why is gaf still talking about that guy.

Yeah it was clear with that 500k quip that he didn't think highly of it. I can't even understand why he'd lowball Beyond after what Heavy Rain did.

Newsflash: Kotaku confirms Arthur Gies is an attention whore.

Well, Beyond is more of a niche thing. Heavy Rain did well given the type of game it was; it exceeded expectations. However in absolute numbers it was just about in that range he said... <300k. We'll see about Beyond; personally I think he's probably right on that one.

For TLoU, I don't even have an issue with his prediction. I might have predicted the same (and been super-wrong). It's hard to gauge consumer sentiment. I do have an issue with the snarky way he made that lame prediction. And of course the implication that Uncharted isn't a high-seller is also another dickish comment. I suppose if set the bar for high sales as 8 million or so, then sure. However, selling in the 5 million range = very strong sales. It's like saying Gears or MGS has meh sales.

Can we call Arthur Gies a "reporter"? Isn't he just a bullshit artist who happens to work at a game website?

Genuine question. Because the shit he has said that has been demonstrably wrong over and over is now legion, and so it appears he just says whatever he wants whenever he wants and he thinks that is "reporting.'

The game sold 3.4 million worldwide in the first 3 weeks.

Ironically one of the lowest scores the game received was from Polygon, where Arthur Gies is the reviews editor. ;)

Yep. Got myself banned for asking if the Microsoft money they received from starting-up the site had anything to do with it. lol

TLoU sold more copies in the US than any other ND game in its first month (by over 200k units). He was incredibly wrong about its performance.

Seriously man, the dude trashed Vanquish for literally all of the wrong reasons. Its like the dude is literally too stupid to understand video games or is so hard headed that he is unable to formulate an opinion that doesn't fit with his preconceptions (PS4 can't be more powerful than Xbox One; Vanquish can't be a tight well designed game mechanically because all Japanese games are janky).

The dude is never right, stop giving him attention because he's just going to keep spewing his shit all over the place and get fans because he's as much as a intentional contrarian as Armond White.

I am SHOCKED he would say the differences were not major. As long as it's the XB1 that's inferior, he's gonna say the differences are irrelevant.

I seriously wish I had the patience to listen to it again, but if anyone wants a crash course on Arthur Gies 101, go back and listen to the February 26th episode of the Rebel FM podcast. Dude was on fire with Sony FUD after their announcement. I'll just give you a quick sampling of his statements on that episode.

-we'll see if PS4 actually has GDDR5 in it when it launches. Doesn't believe Sony.

-PS4 might very well have production problems due to using GDDR5, because it's very hard to make.

-PS4 is going to be uber expensive because it uses GDDR5.

-PS4 is going to be very large because of all the heat GDDR5 creates.

That is just a sampling from my memory, but I happen to listen to that episode a few months ago and had some great laughs at just how wrong he was over, and over, and over again.

this was on the back of months of talking down sony, saying how they were way behind, hadn't got anything together, had no direction and that no-one believed in them compared to the monster of a system (if you will) that he knew microsoft was putting together.

of course gies is far too arrogant to admit he got things a bit wrong, so he doubled down on his garbage.

Sounds like a Fox News reporter to me.

I'll quote this post since it is recent but you realize posts like this make you the cartoon and not Gies?

Pretty obvious what he is saying.

Wait Arthur Gies is saying this? I hate Twitter.

Anyway, yeah, Arthus Gies is saying this so it doesn't mean anything to me :P

There's so many sins of Arthur Gies. If he made an effort toward changing that's one thing. But he has literally never stopped bullshitting. Every week he wades and plops down bullshit he either does not understand, is completely wrong about or utilizes just to incite something. He welched on a bet on NeoGAF and never came back. Evilore called him the least trustworthy person in the industry or some shit. If he's a "reporter", Sarah Palin was a "reporter" when she was commentating on Fox News.

Its not wrong, however. He always double down on everything and never, ever backs away from it (see: Sim City, PS4 being less powerful, Xbox One has secret sauce).

I dunno sounds about right from Gies, "it sucks now, but it will be so much better later with improved tools, I promise".

Damage control up the ass.

That trend might stop if people stopped making NeoGAF threads based on vague tweets by reporters. Just saying!

As a recent episode of Real Time noted:
"New Rule: if you end your tweet with 'Just sayin', then you've just tweeted something incredibly shitty.

No one ever tweets, "Had a nice lunch with my sister. Just saying."

I do find Gies humorous, but aren't we just feeding his ego by making a big deal out of anything he says? The less attention he gets, the better for everyone.

The know-it-all that's always wrong but still argues all the time is a fun character though...

esRAM is responsible for "things"... at launch? This suggests one day Microsoft releases a patch and esRAM will magically evaporate or transform DDR3 into GDDR5. Yup, sounds logical /s. I'd believe in problems with drivers and tools, sure, but if esRAM is a hardware bottleneck, it will never be solved. They may optimize drivers and improve API to utilize it in a better way but esRAM is going to stay in Xbox until this generation ends.

i know he is a bullshitter, but he is a gear in their machine, not ours. it'll be interesting if there is something wrong, and if not, maybe we can finally just blacklist him forever from the industry.

Haha, I am catching up on a lot of things I never even knew Gies said in this thread.

He actually said The Last of Us would only sell half a million copies?

Whenever Gies speaks I feel like I want to puke. Not out of disgust, but hate. Hate puke. I hate puke in your general direction, Arthur. :/

This will be the excuse for launch titles underperforming. Forza will be used as an example of why everything will be fine later on, when things have improved. Please be patient..

didnt he believe that XB1 had extra gpu or something? lost secret sauce bet with someone here?

thing that people need to know about arthur is that he doesnt understand anything about technology. he literally cant tell 0 from 1. which makes a lot of sense when you see his statements from past.

in general, he knows very little and almost always is proven wrong.

While you are probably right, I have to be consistent... he has proven I can't believe him about anything at all, so it makes no sense for me to selectively choose when to believe him, ya know?

I think it's more that developers will optimise their engines and whatnot to improve their usage of the esRAM as things go on. Making things improve, although it's obviously not magically going to become as powerful as the PS4. (it was me he was replying to on Twitter)

Launch games are launch games, they're guaranteed to be sloppy. They are at every console launch.

If Gies is saying THIS, that might mean its a lot worse than even that.
