Turned on the radio the other day and they were interviewing some women developers from silicon valley and how hard it is for them to excel in the industry. They talked about the change of the typical nerd into...the BROGRAMMER.

Urban Dictionary: A programmer who breaks the usual expectations of quiet nerdiness and opts instead for the usual trappings of a frat-boy: popped collars, bad beer, and calling everybody "bro". Despised by everyone, especially other programmers.

I have never heard of this term before. Must be out of touch....

So are any of you... BROGRAMMERS?

In tech, some bemoan the rise of 'brogrammer' culture

edit: Not a new article, but certainly new to me.

Most Developers Are Middle-Aged Married Folks, Yet Brogrammers Persist

My best friend's brother is one of these.

He parties non-stop, went to USC, says "bro" all the time, is constantly drunk and got a six-figure salary straight out of undergrad programming shitty iPhone games.

I didn't know this was a term, haha. I can consider myself a Brogrammer. I am a programmer and also a IT Director but absolutely go out, get drunk, party like a crazy asshole, outgoing, social, etc while also keeping my cool nerd factor (games, anime, movies, etc). Guess I am well balanced. I still don't understand why most programmers are the quiet/shy type. I have noticed the vast majority of CS majors are like that, us MIS guys are usually "cool" (whatever that means).

There are a lot of people around my age at MS that are like this. A lot of the older folks are married and start to settle down a bit after a while

So is bro-X just how people describe anyone that is more confident, better looking, bigger, stronger, and more successful then them now?

CS has been a mostly introvert field until very recently when the barrier for entry became more accessible.

x-copy from programming thread:

I have a question for those of you who work out in California as developers. If you don't mind sharing, and I understand if you don't, how much are you making out there? What languages are you working on, how many years you have been developing and where do you live? I really would like to move out to Cali one day but am curious as to how much of a bump in salary would I need in order to do a lateral movement and then get the 20% increase for getting a new job.

PMs would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Grr... No. Most of the non-coast developer community absolutely detests brogrammer "culture". Super exclusive and arbitrary. Worst of all they tend to write shit code (yay sophomorism)

Maybe it's changed or misunderstood like "hipster" but it's generally used for someone who is white, male, adopts hyper-masculine ideals, supported by generally well-off parents but contributes little and gets drunk on shitty beer.

I was last year when I was hitting the gym hard squatting and deadlifting with a bro. I'm in between bro and hipster programmer at the moment.

Yup.

my roommate that I mentioned earlier during undergrad was middle eastern and had poor parents

he did drink shitty beer but only because he didn't have a lot of money

he fits the bill in the other areas though. i actually knew a lot of non-white, non-rich males who were like this. maybe because California is so diverse?

No, just someone that's an unlikeable asshole.

But isnt one of the main complaints about bro what ever is that they`re always out parting and womanizing?
For being such UNLIKABLE assholes they seem to have a lot of friends, and a very busy social life.

They are perceived as assholes by the betas and super betas.

Nah, complaining people are just salty.

your not a programmer until you can translate your source code into obj code by hand , so no bro read more compiler manuals and come at me.

Brogrammers are just beta in real life around everyone else. But when they get surrounded by other beta "brogrammers" because finally in Uni they were told "they have some value" and are not the total losers that everyone before said they were. So now they try to over compensate by becoming bros forever yearning to be like those who used to kick their ass and get all the girls.

Neither here nor there brogrammers are kind of like the hyena who crawls into the skin of a dead lion. They can cover their loserness all they want but inside they will still be losers.
