I don't know man. I don't know of many companies enjoying monopoly sustaining success for too long. To say they don't need outside competition is putting blind faith in a corporation. Monopoly always makes people complacent. Internal competition is good, but not as good as external competition.

It depends on what you're talking about. I'm talking about games here. There was competition between ND and Insomniac way back and it drove both companies to strive for greatness. Now Sony have many AAA teams fighting to be the top dog. Only Sony teams are going to push the PS4 to the limit and so it follows that only Sony teams are the competition.

I see what you are saying. The PS4 does have a surplus of RoPs to handle 1080p with ease and rendering is the final stage of the graphical pipeline.

That said, why do have current gen console games in existence that are below 720p going as far as 546p (iirc) in some cases?

I feel like more people are going to be outraged over the consoles being HDMI-only rather than the resolution difference. I know of more than few people that are still rocking the A/V cables with their 360s and ps3s.

when I put that vid @ 1080p and watch it on my 40'' 1080p TV, it looks practically identical. With only only slightly more aliasing on the 720p version

360 vs ps3 games had bigger differences.

There must be some better native 1080p video on the internet showing the difference between 720p and 1080p, I would really appreciate if someone could post some links for such comparisons.

I'd suggest this is a poor wager. People lineup for Madden releases. They line up for the new Gears an Halo. Largely casual gamers who line up for re fanfare of it. To be the first on the block to have one.

My little brother and his friends -- who only play Gears and NBA 2K -- are lining up to get a One and can't be convinced otherwise. Why? Because it's familiar to them, because they want to continue to play Gears and Halo, and because they have a network of friends established already.

Some of you think people will jump ship just because there is less power. I say you're wrong. It's going to be about the games and where people can get the exclusive games ad experience they want. In addition to how important the community of online friends they have on LIVE is to them. I bet LIVE and those exclusives prove to have more pull than a resolution downgrade for many.

Your mileage may vary. I wouldn't recommend anyone get a One at launch until these questions are answered, but it won't stop people from lining up or liking what they see on demo kiosks.

Same thing is going on with my friends. Familiarity. And they all play COD and Halo etc for hundreds of hours. A lot of gamers don't even care about this stuff.

yes but its also not only about jumping ship. i personally am a sony person grew up with ps1 so i would only shift to xbox if the ps was at a super significant disadvantage. plus i just love sony's exclusives used to be all about gt and mgs and now its about naughty gods ... similarly with some friends who started on xbox ... but you have ppl who are going to get getting their first consoles etc etc so with the positive buzz sony is generating those guys can be locked up into the ps ecosystem.

Alright, so CoD is 100% confirmed 720p on Xbone and 1080p on PS4 by multiple sources.

BF4 is confirmed 720p on Xbone, but I can't find the confirmation for 1080p on PS4. It's aggrevating, because BF4 on PS4 is the only one that really matters to me anyway.

I know it's buried in here somewhere, but the only thing I saw was the "It's not" reply from Kagari. Did I miss something?

I know this sounds crazy but why not delay the Xbox One until early/mid 2014, sort things out better maybe even drop Kinect fix other stuff. Might be some shock for a couple weeks but in the long run wouldn't MS benefit from a delay, because at this point they are gonna have to bail on the current console in a couple years.

I doubt it. If PS4 wasn't solid they'd just drop it to 900p. That's the thing, you have room to drop. If lets say XB1 version is still choppy at 720p, then they have to start making other sacrifices

Mortimer's real name isn't exactly hidden. CBOAT works for MS or is attached to them in some way, so he obfuscates so he doesn't lose his job. Mods want to verify information from reliable sources before giving the go ahead, in order to avoid liability for certain things said.

Hot scoops? We're talking about doing the right thing here and potentially minimizing harm to consumers. I don't pretend to know how serious the issue is, but, generally speaking, you don't blanket embargo your console a week or two before it's set to release unless shit is bad. If this thing is bricked/fucked/crashing, people need to know. If it's not doing what it was advertised as doing, people need to know.

Giving the media a free pass on sitting on this info holds back the entire industry. Players large and small shouldn't be able to get away with this. We're not asking them to distort the truth, only to report what they know.

Mortimer also (thankfully) doesn't go too hard in the paint with this stuff. He waits to verify and confirms after the fact. No shit that's what CBoaT does. And the mods do exactly what they should.

Their minds are going to be blown. I went from a/v cords on 360 to HDMI on PS3 and my mind was blown. It felt next gen. I eventually realized it was not so much that the PS3 was more powerful, but it was just about the HDMI

If he's talking about what Proelyte was talking about earlier in the week, it's enough of a reason to cancel your pre-order and wait for MS to get their shit together.

I'm just guessing, but I'd say in the future that having a "Day One" message on your Xbox One box and controller is going to be a liability when trying to sell it.

For me the issue isn't 720p per se. It's what seems to be reason behind 720p. The impression I've got from the twitter discussions and what CBoat had PM'ed Bish is that the console isn't even ready for launch. It may even explain why games cannot be reviewed at the same time. May be the OS version that the reviewers have right now isn't even stable for them to play the game end-to-end. May be they have been told not to reveal this problem because MS is assuring they'll somehow make it work within a few more days, which is causing all the twitter frustration. So many questions! It would be extremely naive to buy the console at launch if it's coming in so hot!

This has got to be just the tip of the iceberg. These games are by top, top developers and they've thrown up their hands in defeat and are settling for 720p. Imagine what sort of concessions are going to be made by middle of the pack developers? Could we see 60fps PS4 games and 30fps Xbox games? I wonder if it'll end up like PS2 vs Xbox where the Xbox had notable special effects that the PS2 wasn't capable of doing.

I've also been thinking this actually. Sure they'll take a massive hit to thier momentum (not that it's great in the first place), and they'll make a lotta people unhappy, but surely this could improve thier prospects over this gen? Maybe even upgrade specs slightly? If that's even possible now even if they do delay. Unless this really would cos the Xbox division to be scrapped...
