She got it right. I'm pretty sure that they did that because console is a category that they strongly believe that they should play with friends at home rather than playing online with friends. Awhile you have handheld where you can't really share it with other people, hence online and wifi.
It's a Japanese culture thing I think. I mean ideally I would like to have my friends all over the world jump into my room BLUESCADOOWECANTOO! but USA is just much bigger and people live a lot further.

Mario Kart online is the best online on the system, but do a comparison for how many games have Wi-Fi on the DS compared to Wii and you'll see. Also, their handheld systems usually tend to have much more robust options in terms of online and networking compared to their consoles.
It's kind of funny to think about, so this is more of a joke, but Luigi's Mansion 3DS has online before Mario 3D World. They care more about online on their handhelds.
