Good games Boa toh (hypnodarkrai I think?)

I slapped on an assault vest onto gardevoir completely forgetting that it disables status moves. *facepalm*

Aw man Goodra doesn't gain water as a type? I grew that little dragon blob just for that! The single dragon typing was way too suspicious. But people are sayin it's good nonetheless, eh? What is "special bulk," I keep seeing that, what the hell is "bulk" in the context of Pokemon?

Training this Shelgon and Tyrantum, my team's becoming WAY too dragon-heavy.

Bulk in general is the ability to take a lot of hits through a combination of things like good typing, high defenses and high HP. It's like tanking in pokemon. Special bulk is the ability to take a lot of special hits, usually due to a good Spec. Def. stat. Attacks are divided into two types. Physical, like crunch or most fighting moves, and special. Special attacks describe moves like Hydro Pump, Thunder, or Psychic. Special moves use the Spec. Atk stat for offensive calculations and Spec. Defense stat for how much it hits the opponent. A good example of special bulk would be Sylveon. Hit her with a move like Hydro Pump and see how little it does. On the other hand, good physical bulk would be something like Gyarados.

if you'd started off gogoat i would have lost i think

I had Klefki and Gallade as well, gallade is the shittiest glass cannon I've ever trained and Klefki is awesome but I just threw a bunch of walls and status inflicters on him bc prankster
I love Klefki. He carried my team for the first ~20 matches in Super Singles Battle Maison before I met my untimely demise during an ill-timed Infernape encounter. Seriously, though, Prankster plus Thunder Wave | Substitute | Swagger | Foul Play is deliciously EVIL. Glad the cute lil' key-ring found his calling!

Same for Carbink being a Stealth Rocker/Dual Screener. Equip a Sturdy Carbink with Light Clay and you're good to go. I actually think a Klefki lead to cause frustration and spread paralysis, followed by Carbink setting up screens (and Stealth Rock, if he's lucky) for the sweepers on the team would be an interesting combo.

On a side note, since you were talking about Barbaracle, I have to say I really dig his design. He reminds me of the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth, if the Pale Man worked out everyday and wore a combination of striped stockings and rock armor. :)

Oh alright, that's pretty cut and dry. "High sp def."

I just traded my Gallade away on a whim to someone I beat just now and I'm seriously considering adding Carbink to my roster. I'm kind of also digging Avalugg tho and I'm trying to figure out ways to make use of him

and yeah Barbaracle is the shit man, I love the way it animates and how its limbs have this weird stretch to them

Yep, that's the long and short of it. Typing does play an important role, too. A pokemon can have great Spe. Def, but a crappy typing like Ice that negates its use for special bulk. It's usually not good enough to have high spe. def, but you also need to resist at least some of the common special attacks.

God damn it! Why can't I get a good female Riolu? In a single batch I had 3 males with 4 IVs meanwhile I get an outstanding female with just attack and defense

aggh

The concept of Barbaracle being an assemblage of individually self-aware barnacles, joined together like the Power Rangers Mega Zord, is just all kinds of awesome. :)

For Carbink, I was lucky to hatch a Sturdy one (Hidden Ability) with 31 in everything but Attack. I went 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 Sp. Def. I'm going to run with Reflect | Light Screen | Stealth Rock | Moonblast, with Light Clay as the hold item to extend the duration of the screens from five turns to eight. I'll always survive a OHKO at full health, so I'll always get at least a screen up, although I've been watching videos of him (ask Busaiku and HypnoDarkrai for their videos), and he can take lots of hits with his base 150 Defense and base 150 Sp. Defense. :)

Lucario breeding is the worst. You have to evolve to breed and terribly uneven gender ratio? God. Good thing Mega Lucario is so worth it.

The grind man, it ain't easy. I got a JPN Riolu with 4 IVs in wonder trade. Gonna have to breed it soon

I dunno why, but all the gift pokemon I download end up strong-willed or have some other difficult personality I have to struggle with. :(

Didn't realize Togekiss was changed to Fairy/Flying... don't know if it's better or worse off now...

The gender ratio is what makes it so annoying. I made a pretty good Noibat in less than an hour

Once I've got that female I gotta train up a good Hitmonchan and make them have babbies so I can get a Lucario with Bullet Punch. If it was a TM I would have just slapped it on one of my 4 IV males hours ago lol

You're doing IV's and then egg moves? Any particular reason? I found that it's far, far quicker to go the other way. When you go for egg moves second, you have to rely on a lot more luck to fill in the IVs again.

Hmm... looking at the changed weaknesses/resistances...

Con
2x Steel
2x Poison
1x Ghost (was 0x)

Pro
0x Dragon
1/4x Bug (was 1/2x)
1/4x Fighting (was 1x)
1/2x Dark Type

Hmm... Not crazy about the new weaknesses (would rather have less weaknesses than more resistances) but the rest is actually pretty great... Though now I don't know if people will use Dragons less anyways, so the 0x Dragon might not even be useful in most battles.

People will still use Dragons because the majority of the Fairies are just not up to scratch.

Azumarill, Togekiss and Mega Mawile definitely are (although Togekiss is still physically weak) and Klefki is incredibly annoying but there's not much else.

How does inheritance of egg moves work when neither of the parents are giving it? Say I pass on Bullet Punch immediately from Hitmanchan M/Lucario F and then start breeding their offspring, will their babies have Bullet Punch?

I was under the impression that moves only passed down in the same transaction.

this is for Togekiss isn't it
yeah, there's like 4 fairies not named Xerneas that are good, and fairies actually cancel Outrage, so Dragon STABs will remain

ATTENTION BARBARACLE FANS:

What sets are you running on him? And what Ability and Nature? What EV spread?

I know he's not a win button or anything, but... interest... growing!

Good to know. Togekiss is the one Pokemon that will always have a place on my team, but I'm glad it hasn't suffered much (if any) in the transition.

That could change of course, if Gen 7 introduces a crapton of legit Fairy types forcing people to use Dragons less/Fairy-killers more. But until then I think this is fine. :)

As far as I know, if any move is inheritable and either parent has it, all of the kids will have it. It's 100% pass down rate. If there are too many moves to inherit, the male's takes priority. Also, they do pass through multiple generations as long as the kid you're breeding has the egg move when you breed it.

Ok great. Are the moves that pass down locked in when you drop them off at the day care or do they change as the parents level up? That's my only other concern

They're locked in as far as I know. Never ran into that issue happening. Never had a set of kids stop getting them part way through breeding.

Sylveon will see OU play purely out of utility and special wall capability. Her great typing+wish will make her a good fit on a lot of teams. Yes, fairy is not good enough to completely stop dragon. There are too few of them and it's too ingrained in the meta. It will see a lot of dragon counter play, though.

Saw this Carbink set on Smogon -- someone has been having great success with it in Ubers, flat-out walling Yveltal, Ho-oh and others.

Carbink @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stone Edge
- Toxic
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

I might try this myself, swapping out Stone Edge for Moonblast since my 31/X/31/31/31/31 Carbink is Bold nature. But my priority right now is to make him a Stealth Rocker/Dual Screener with Light Clay boosting the screens.

right, so....which set are you really running, since your other one is also off of Smogon

Interesting ideas. I do think that set will fall out of play, especially out of Ubers, once the Bank opens up. Dual Screens seems like the way Carbink will make it into the larger meta if it hangs on.

I'm not sure yet -- depends on the needs of the team. The nice thing is between TMs being reusable and the Move Relearner recalling all moves for Heart Scales (and Heart Scales being a dime a dozen with the Old Rod outside Cyllage City), I can easily switch between the two to experiment. :)

To add a third option to the mix, HypnoDarkrai had an interesting Carbink set running Protect and Toxic. He sent me a battle video earlier where he had great success with it against a strong team.

I think I'm still leaning toward the dual screens, though. It won't always work, but the times I can get a screen or two up and running would be helpful for slow sweepers/glass cannons who move second and thus need to tank hits.

So both Mewtwo and Zygarde got caught with Quick Balls.
Capture Powers are crazy.

Capture Powers being pretty great combined with Quick Balls being kind of OP and legendaries that are laughably easy to capture. I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad that all the challenge of capturing legendaries is gone now.

Won't carbink die to a single earthquake from Ho oh?
Not if Sturdy saves him for a Rest and Toxic has been inflicted for a finishing blow from Stone Edge! (Or something like that)

Steel is what Carbink has to worry about. It's the only thing that hits him for 4X. His base 150 in Defense and Sp. Defense can take a lot of abuse.

So I just tried a few ranked matches and got bodied. I had fun though. I really need to invest in some bulky types it seems. Too many games were decided because something had priority (Talonflame Brave Bird is the most "just do it" thing ever I swear) or I underestimated the defensive values something had. I also got exposed to Klefki running Thunder Wave/Spikes/Dual Screens. Shit is WHOA.

Tangent: I'm mildly curious about how well a defensive supporting Gardevoir would work with my team.

Oh yeah, forgot about sturdy.

Thanks for the mons, otakumegane, though I'm wondering what message you're trying to tell me. :P I really do appreciate the honedge and the togepi though.

That's pretty much what I'm experimenting with right now. Using choice scarf gardevoir to do some wish passing/will o wisping/light screening.

I honestly don't see why you'd want to use Sylveon over Blissey for a specially defensive Wish user.

It can hit harder and do well vs dragons but when it comes to actually doing its role it's a hell of a lot worse especially since Wish runs off max HP.
