DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

It's not his ignorance but yours. Read the Eurogamer article. Sony's resolution is higher but the scaler they used to get to 1080P sucks huge balls causing the image to look blurred.

They blew a huge opportunity. Force both systems to 720p, let the TV do the scaling, compare the image softness.

Plus, while you are at it, check to see if PS4 nails 60fps when you force it to 720p.

Yeah, this is so strange to me.

Crushed blacks do not make for a better image- and yet, most are saying XO version has the slight.

To each their own! Glad to see both consoles are doing certain things well!

I remember when I was fresh to the PC gaming. Dead Island just came out and gaffers was posting pictures. After much tweaking I posted my pics and people pretty much laughed at me asking what setting did I have. My blacks were crushed like a big dog. I couldn't see anything in shade on the island. It looked neat to me in a way. I liked it, but for gameplay about surroundings it became a problem, especially at night.

Coming from a PC guy, I think it's fairly obvious the PS4 is the superior version.

+It's 900p opposed to 720p
+It has Ambient Occlusion which appears to be missing from the One version.
+Even with the resolution difference, it constantly seems to maintain a higher frame rate than the One version.

Now don't get me wrong, the One version doesn't look bad, but as people have mentioned it looks like it's sharpened and the colours look way off.

I think what matters is, whatever system you get the game on it's gonna look half decent.
Excellent post.

I am confused, I thought the PS4 was 50% stronger? how is this even possible?? I'm seriously disap-fucking-pointed. I feel deflated by how bad the PS4 version looks in comparison. It's like PS3vs360 version washed look again.

The game demonstrates the PS4 is stronger. Its higher resolution, with AO, and runs better.

You can ignore gamma/contrast differences because you can calibrate that yourself.

You are getting less apparent texture detail though, but that's because of upscaling filters that are attempting to recreate detail lost from the lower resolution on X1. There will be cases where this looks worse or better.

the colors pop and they crush the blacks making it look more cinematic.

This isn't a good thing lol. The term "crushed blacks" isn't the same as saying "Whoa bro he totally CRUSHED that dinner, the food was so good!"

You don't want crushed blacks. They obliterate detail.

Xbox One does look better at first glance. Although then, if any of you ever had to edit images/videos or even play around with your contrast settings, you'll soon realise that the resulting crushed blacks and artifacts from the image sharpening just makes everything looks shittier after a while.

Exactly. the PS4's look does seem 'soft' but it's a much better version to be honest.

Its seem at least MS can fool most people with their sharpening filter, people with $200 dollar TV won't realize, dat secret sauce.

Not trying to argue with you in any way, but to my eyes the X1 version looks crisper and more colorful.
That's what I'm seeing too.

Some of the textures seem more detailed on XO. The XO signal is also a little darker with better color definition.

In the framerate comparison video, XO is also ahead in some sequences. PS4 is ahead in others.

So... what's the explanation? PS4 is slightly more powerful. Was the PS4 version botched?

Yeah I'm looking at the footage again, and it's like you guys are mentioning. PS4 version is not really washed, XBO version is just over contrasted. Also, the seemingly abundant amount of powerlines are not doing the 720p any favors. The footage reminded me of watching Castlevania: LoS cutscenes on my PC monitor

They made the PC and Ps4 footage look washed out, while X1 blacks are crushed. Youtube isn't helping.

I noticed right at the beginning of the DF video comparison, Ps4 buttons on the steering wheel were faded out while X1 showed them clear as day. Something isn't right here.

So the BIG question is why only the Xbox One version has the artificial sharpening while both the PC and PS4 are lacking it?

Is it due to the developer intention or MS?

PS4 advantages:
better framerate - higher native res - ambient occlusion - more shadows - more geometry in some places - Paracel Storm gameplay shown

XBO advantages:
higher saturation / better looking colors / artificial sharpening

Dat Crusher Black...

Seriously people look at that, PS4 is lot closer to PC version than Xbox because of those crusher black on Xbox. Unless you guys think that Xbox version looks better than PC...

Look at that, you cannot even the details on the gun on Xbox.

Folks hit the little arrow and go back and read this post complete with images. The Xbone is sucking up assets into a darkness. It is seriously hurting my head to continue reading people preferring the oversharpened and crushed black images of the Xbone. To each their own, but you are losing so much detail.

Hey guys, look what I did. I upped the contrast, saturation, and sharpening of the PS4 image, and now it has all the colors you crave. You can do this on your TV (it has settings for these things):

What I am saying is, it is silly to say the PS4 version looks worse because of the oversaturation, over sharpened and contrasted filter of the XB1 version. TVs can make your PS4 version look like that. And then all that's left is to compare the other things, that your TV can't fix: resolution, and framerate, both of which the PS4 version is superior in.

You keep telling yourself that. Use your eyes. They are close.

Read the article.

Accepting a poorer framerate and resolution is simply moving the goalposts from a few weeks ago. How low are your expectations now for a more expensive console?

PS4 is running at a higher resolution...yet looks blurrier? Weird. The washed out color palette can probably be fixed by lowering gamma and increasing saturation, if that's the way you want to go.

PS4 version does maintain a more consistent frame rate but it's a lot closer than I thought it would be.

Alright, I just "corrected" the levels of the PS4 side to match the X1 side closer. All I did was crush the black and white levels. I did *not* touch the colors at all. Notice the SSAO on the PS4 version around the hand.

It's unfortunate that the captures are so different, making comparisons difficult.

I did the same thing to confirm before you posted. People thinking the Xbox version is better due to a video capture cock up, while boasting nearly 1/2 the resolution are in for heartbreak this generation.

Xbox One seriously looks better to me, more crisp and colorful. Honestly, I don't care if they crushed blacks to do it, it looks better because of it. Whatever way they want to use to make their games look the best, they should do it. I almost wish the PS4 crushed blacks as well.

Holy shit. The bias in here is fucking ridiculous. LOOK AT THE CONTRAST AND SHARPNESS ON THE XBONE VIDEO. DICE got y'all drinking the Kool Aid hard. I was planning on getting the game for PC anyway, but this is pathetic.

My god its like ps3 vs 360 all over again.

  • PS4 has less jaggies
  • X1 has better texture detail (check out the hair on the black guys head, his hair is clealy more detailed in the x1 version)
  • More vibrant colours on the X1 (not and advantage, becuase everyone will have there tv's calibrated properly)
I think the PS4 is the victor here because jaggies were one of my biggest woes this gen.Though when you take into account the better looking textures of the X1, the PS4 advantage is even less of an advantage the 360 had over some PS3 games, such as fallout 3 and RDR.

So can our tech wizards explain the difference in these shot? To me it looks like better textures, but if all I have to do is tune my TV or something, I'd like to know.

Of course the color saturations couldn't have been the same. It would have gone too far to put these kind of debates aside to have an easy point of comparison. No, now we get to keep this stupidity going. I don't know what I expected.

Jackfrags, who people have been waiting for with bated breath, even says the PS4 mp looks better than the Xbox One sp. Evidently that doesn't mean anything anymore though thanks to this comparison. I'm out. This is never going to end.

Thanks for putting this stupidity in perspective. Too bad we're already dead.

Should i care that it is "artificially sharp"? Serious question. I mean, it looks how it looks. And it looks pretty ok to me

Good post. Thanks for the insight.

BF4 and Killzone it is for me!

Both console versions look good, though the strange higher contrast on XO is mildly off putting in certain scenes... while making things like explosions looks better.
