PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Why are you (and the rest of people that are doing it) defending the fact that a 399$ 2013 machine isn't capable of reproducing MP3?

Honest question, it goes beyond my comprehension.
Because its a big leap to say that it's not a "machine for gamers" because of this.

I don't listen to music on my console much, but I've spent the last few years converting all of my dvd's to a digital library in my media server. Not being able to watch any of that in my PS4 is a huge kick to the nuts. I really hope Sony patches this back in.

If this is a patent issue then I'm fine without it, if this is a means to sell Music Unlimited then they should listen to the people who would like it on PS4 and just patch in support.

I subscribed to Music Unlimited and I love the variety and how well the updates are, but the Android app is terrible for the most part. And the Music Unlimited app is cumbersome on PS3

So three new troubling finds:

- No DLNA

- No MP3 (force Music Unlimited Sub for custom soundtracks)

- Smaller physical size than expected for HDD

Only the HDD part personally concerns me, but the other two stand out more as obvious glaring omissions.

Make your voices heard, @yosp is there.

what is the HDD info? Cant find it quickly anywhere.

No Custom soundtrack via mp3's sucks, hopefully they plan to implement it, although i wont use it myself it is one of the basic features really. Plus not like I can get Music Unlimited anyway.

I won't use it, but I'm sure a lot of people do. They could easily patch it in. This should be a standard feature though

No DLNA is bullshit. The fucking PS3 has this.

Count me in for not using those features frequently, but even I think it's pure fuckery.

It's a bunch a crap and consumers/sony fans shouldn't stand for it.

jmdajr, what console are you getting if any at launch? haven't seen you in gaming much these days.

I've been pretty lenient on Sony for everything they've done in the past, but what the hell? No MP3/DLNA playback? Have we been going backwards?

someone needs to start #PS4MP3DLNA

It isn't that difficult; they are the diehards who will fall on a sword for their brand.

400 or 500 dollars for console that will do a lot of things isn't asking a lot. If some are falling on the sword for their favorite brand then let them. Some are rational enough to at least not just respond with obscenities or over reactions.

I'm sure both companies will have some things planned post release seeing as these systems aren't even out yet and we get this kind of reaction.

Truly sensitive times when even background threads get 500 posts.

Wait, WHAT?

No MP3 support?

My Sony Blu-Ray player plays MP3s, MP4s, MPEGs, AVIs, MTS, etc.... straight off data discs and USB drives.

The PS4 can't do this? Who in the bloody hell thought that was a good idea?

Something that could easily be added with a firmware update is missing. Everybody cancel!!
Something they've locked down and are now monetizing is something we should expect a firmware update to open up?

Have Sony given any reason whatsoever to expect these features to be patched in at a later date?

I fucking loved the visualizer on the ps3 it might sound odd but I was really looking forward to a new visualizer :(

Me too. :(

I was actually bummed when Sony didn't add any new ones for the PS3 (they hinted at releasing like 5 more visualizations way back in 2007 or so). They added the Planet Earth one and that was it.
3DO still has the best music visualizer. Man that was so much fun to trip to. You could mess with it by pushing various buttons/d-pad/etc.

No CD playback was bad enough for me, but no MP3s in general? Fucking stupid.
Guess I'll be keeping my laptop close by. Thanks, Sony. :[[[

Didn't know not being able to play your own music is stopping you from playing games. Learn something every day.

A lot of people really do value custom soundtracks for playing games. Certain genres, like racing, or even certain modes, like online survival, really do benefit from custom music as part of those gaming experiences. Some of us, outside of narrative-heavy games, will listen to audiobooks or podcasts while we play. This is especially important when those people have time constraints due to work. While you were being sarcastic about learning something new, it's probably worth thinking about.

Also, you're suggesting that it's not a problem to take away existing functionality and features (which don't require special investment or hardware from manufacturers) from the newer systems. I have no earthly idea what would motivate that.

From the "PS4: The Ultimate FAQ"
What type of hard drive does PS4 use?

PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.
.

oh no...now ill have to listen to just the game im playing.

Is it really that important to people to be listening to their linkin park while pwning some righteous noobs in call of dooty?

How dare you imply such a thing!

(Smarmy jokes aside, apparently it is to a lot of people. There were always some people who had something else pumping on a stereo in the past, and it was beyond useful to have a console with the smarts to do both without having to fiddle with other gear.)

This thing with the external storage, does that mean, that I cant transfer video datas from PC to PS4 via USB, while I am able to transfer a Firmware Update from USB?

This makes no sense...

Have Sony given any reason whatsoever to expect these features to be patched in at a later date?
Only people in denial think Sony has just cause to patch those features in at a later date.
Why? "Because Sony LOVES us. They're not Microsoft. They'll do what's right."

<rolls eyes>

jmdajr, what console are you getting if any at launch? haven't seen you in gaming much these days.

I have a PS4 pre-ordered. Still wondering if it's a wise choice.

I do use a lot of multimedia capabilities, like say windows media center on 360. But Xbone doesn't even use that. It's straight up caca.

Anyhow, Fatherhood hasn't allowed much time for games.

I have no idea how people play racing, sports or competitive shooters without custom soundtracks.

This is complete bullshit.

Have they actually mentioned exactly what file i/o capabilities PS4 has?

I mean, at this stage have they even stated whether you can transfer anything to/from an external drive?

No external drive support, no mp3s,probably no file input, maybe harddrive needs to be formatted once inserted, probably encrypted too. Maybe they are going for the same type of lockout as the Vita. HD=mem card. If they do, it will probably be due to anti-piracy I think. I think this is the reason behind no custom wallpaper too. If I am correct, minimal file input or access to file system.

Pretty simple. I'm buying a PS4 to play games. Not being able to listen to my own music and having to use MU sucks, but it doesn't stop the fact that I can enjoy my games without it.

It isn't that difficult; they are the diehards who will fall on a sword for their brand.

lol This guy.

I am sorry for posting again, but im getting more angry by the minute.

Those fucking bullshit paywalls need to die, it should have died with XBL.

god danm!

The day any console will legally support MKV is the same day that the N64 produces better GFX than a Quad-SLI Titan powered pc.
Who knows. I'm thinking that Microsoft is going to end the "Windows Media Extender" chapter.

My mom's fucking tv can play mkvs...
It's such a stupid thing to leave out.

Not really because of this announcement, but I always wondered: some people seriously hear music when using their videogame? Why? And when? Serious question... like, that doesn't make any sense to me. You are either browsing the store or playing games, or searching for something in the main menu (that usually doesn't take much time). How do you find time to listen to music is beyond me. I never understood the reason to add this Music Unlimited or whatever in the first place.

Also whats DLNA?

Because its a big leap to say that it's not a "machine for gamers" because of this.

There's many games that are noticeably improved with custom soundtracks, especially including EA racing games. Forcing a subscription to a mildly crappy music service to get custom soundtrack sucks, and in that regard makes it worse than the PS3 in terms of custom soundtracks. Especially since most of my music is stuff that's not on MU, so I couldn't listen to it even if I did shell out for the subscription.

And I game using headsets, so using another device is not a good solution.

Oh. Dlna didn't launch with ps3 either? Maybe it's just not ready.

Of course it's not ready. It won't stop people from over reacting though.

These consoles will have features added and fine tuned through their whole life. People need to realize the complexities of launching new systems and certain priorities coming first.

Yikes. I mean, background music wasn't really a selling point for me but it would have been nice to have. Also, video unlimited is WAY too expensive IMO. They should just do what Amazon does and allow access to certain shows for a monthly/yearly fee and charge extra for premium new content like movies.

Umm a console can't play MP3 or basically any file based media despite the fact everything and their mother can play MP3's and precisely why can't it? It's because they want you to buy an entirely separate subscription. Regardless how you look at it this is some Grade A bullshit, if no one complains this, this shit will remain so telling everyone to calm down isn't helping things.

Were you telling people to calm down when the DRM fiasco hit? Probably not, just because it doesn't matter to you doesn't mean it doesn't matter to others.

i don't do this but I am sure there are people that stream music to their ps3 outside of video games. Maybe their music library is on a computer in another room and their ps3 is hooked up to the best stereo in the house.

Oh i get how it would be cool, I would love to play music or dump my podcasts onto my ps4 so i can listen to it while I play.

But its nothing near the end of the console world scenario that people seem to be clamoring about and should be easy as a patch to add in.

I would assume they did this to avoid people playing illegally gained music on their system right? Why else would they not include something like it?
