Not really because of this announcement, but I always wondered: some people seriously hear music when using their videogame? Why? And when? Serious question... like, that doesn't make any sense to me. You are either browsing the store or playing games, or searching for something in the main menu (that usually doesn't take much time). How do you find time to listen to music is beyond me. I never understood the reason to add this Music Unlimited or whatever in the first place.

Also whats DLNA?

I use a custom soundtrack for SSBB, for example. While the standard soundtrack IS awesome you just want to hear something else after 1000hrs. I also use the custom soundtrack to accommodate my custom stages :D

I also use a custom soundtrack in racing games and (to a degree) in most other multiplayer games.

Never in SP though. Basically I only use it when
a) I don't like the regular soundtrack
b) I'm not in SP where the soundtrack might be used as a stylistic device.

wtf? why downgrade features from ps3 to ps4? ps3 had a beautiful audio visualizer, let you play mp3s, AND cds. c'mon sony, this is inexcusable. we're approaching nintendo levels of stupidity and ass-backwards-ness here (inb4 haters, i still heart nintendo)

Why shouldnt people expect functionality that was added during last gen to work on the new console? Certain things missing are more understandable than others, like BC, but wouldnt people be mad if Party chat wasn't working at launch even though it wasn't a feature when the Xbox 360 launched?

I suspect people are mad that Dlna support was removed, not that it has not been added. Do you see the difference?

Sony's priorities are not your priorities. It isn't that they couldnt easily get MP3 support and DLNA working, it's just that they prioritized getting pay-to-play equivalents working first.

Is it supposed to be a shocking revelation that Sony put work into a feature that is in the console and did not put work into a feature that is not in the console?

Indeed but telling people to calm down isn't helping things. Worst case scenario Sony doesn't change anything best case scenario Sony changes promptly if people don't do anything the Sony probably won't do anything either way. unless it was simply a delay.

Either way complaining doesn't harm things but it can improve things telling people do calm down does nothing.

Then folks should carry themselves better then but that doesn't make this some good news. It's not as terrifying as the reactions though.

I tweeted and complained to yosp.

The whole not being able to use the system as a media server really sucks. Oh wait... like every other device I own already does this already.

Hell the launch PS3 played SACD!

The worst thing is that everyone going to keep never using Music Unlimited anyway. And now hating the service even if dont use.

Damn, a lot if my friends listened to music constantly. Personally doesn't affect me at all, but it's a silly move they hopefully change.

Man this is a bummer. Using my PS3 as a media server is something I do quite often and it's pretty damn cool. Seems like a feature that can and will inevitably be patched in. Hopefully this will be implemented by the time I'm ready to purchase.

Couldn't care less.

The number of times I've used background music in games, other than what the game provides? Zero.
The number of times I've used any PlayStation console to play music? Probably once or twice on the original PSX, just see the dumb visualizer.

That reeks! I always play some background music when playing a fighting game.

Hopefully they can solve that. Except fighting games I don't know many games that had support for background music on PS3. I know the Vita almost has every game the ability for background music while playing.

Some people might want to use their consoles to listen to music while doing a host of non-game related activities such as socialising, chilling, having sex etc.
Well just subscribe to Music Unlimited and you can catch all the STDs they can throw at you, to your very own mainstream soundtrack.

As someone who plays a lot of fighting games , RPGs and sometimes sims music is a god send .

wtf, at this rate it looks like I'm going to have to keep my PS3 around for media center duties...

I actually use it for music a lot, which bugs me, but the most annoying thing is just how much of a money grabbing exercise it seems to be.

All the time, especially games without a lot of dialogue or cutscenes, like strategy games or even ARPGs
Yep. And racing games, and open world games, and survival modes, and loot games, and any games with crappy soundtracks or underused soundtracks. Hell, some of my custom soundtracks are made up of the game's own music.

Was looking forward to playing some Diablo 3 while listening to the Bombcast. Guess that's just too futuristic or dangerous a concept for a late 2013 console.

It's also disappointing that the Ps4 won't read music CDs. I use my Ps3 as a CD player all the time.. so I'm just glad that I'm keeping it hooked up to the main TV.

But MP3s and CDs? This seems like a weird limitation in general towards music.
We've known it couldn't play cd Roms for some time. MP3 support is odd. Isn't the cost tiny? Probably to force you into buying music again.

One more thing: Seeing some questions re: Xbox One & support for CDs, MP3, DNLA etc. I'll track those answers down.

I imagine suddenly nelson with shotgun hunting DNLA because he believe it is bird

Not as shocking as them going backwards instead of forwards with their new console, no.

Indeed but does that matter. Overreacting to get a company to change an anti-consumer policy is the least of this societies woes. As long as they're not threatening in a totally unreasonable way or doing something illegal I don't see the issue.

While I dont listen to music on a console at all, be it in-game at all, this is just stupid. I cant comprehend why they would do so.

There's many games that are noticeably improved with custom soundtracks, especially including EA racing games. Forcing a subscription to a mildly crappy music service to get custom soundtrack sucks, and in that regard makes it worse than the PS3 in terms of custom soundtracks. Especially since most of my music is stuff that's not on MU, so I couldn't listen to it even if I did shell out for the subscription.

And I game using headsets, so using another device is not a good solution.
Right. Some games definitely benefit with custom soundtracks. And the absence of this feature certainly sucks for any who planned to use it. But somehow the machine is no longer meant for gamers? C'mon dude that's hyperbole if I've ever heard it.

Very strange, the licencing for mp3 was too expensive for them? I hope they change their mind on this. it generates a lot of ill will for a trivial thing. I suppose this is why competition is good because it pushes them to do better. Sony has to do better here.
