PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

I'm so happy this was never something i used on 360, and never wanted on PS3. I don't understand why anyone would want to play nick kershaw* while an epic space battle is occurring in killzone. It sucks for those who use their console as a jukebox, but thankfully that ain't me.

*or anything other then the ost that is present in the game.

Deal breaker. PS3 is my media center, streams from my PC. This is a KEY feature for me, I can not believe they did this....
Lol, if the xb1 supports it I will probably get that first now.

It literally comes down to how many hdmi ports I have and not wanting add a box just for that

This is really disgusting... I assume if there's no mp3 support, we can sit on avi mkv etc...
WTF is this shit? Bring on the PS4 CFW guys.
This is why they're crazy for going through with this. The hackers will work even harder now there is a cause to be fought for, coupled in with the architecture that is closer to PCs and there will be much drama.

Just like with OtherOS being removed from the PS3...

I don't listen to music=nobody should ever want to listen to music.
When the hell did I say that? I wasn't aware the PS4 was a giant bonfire for mp3 capable devices.

Do you have any data to support that music playback is "fringe usage" or did you pull that out of your ass?
Do I really need to go grab a statistic about custom soundtracks in the age of the iPhone? You also need me to go fetch a statistic on the number of people riding horses instead of driving cars?

If you find this a terrible decision for your personal use of the system or think about how others use the system you find this on an equal plane to war crimes and combating an oppressive government? Okay i'm out of here with these horrible allusions and analogies

What Sony should do asap is announce that these issues will be patched at a later date.

I'm pretty sure they will within the next couple days, since people are apparently frothing at the mouth about it. Wasn't DLNA established by Sony?

Not all features will make launch. Sony and Microsoft's priority is making sure they consoles play games day one. This is a typical launch, additional features always get patched in later down the line. It happened with the Xbox 360 and the PS3. People need to step back and breathe.

That about embodies some of peoples reactions here except they aren't full on stupid like this guy.

Something like PS4 is about games first. I don't remember the last time I was ever excited for a new console to play music on.
I understand and appluade that. Still, excluding or removing an mp3 player, especially after its predecessors capabilities in the media department, is disheartening at the very least. Its as if they expect the PS4 to go alongside the PS3, instead of replacing it.

It's kind of funny how the biggest negatives to the PS4 are about trivial and arbitrary things such as mp3s and multimedia services. Its sucks that it does not have the option but these things are being blown over the top. Do some of you even remember why you buy consoles in the first place? Last time I checked this site was a dedicated hardcore gaming forum and that should take priority above all things.

Yep. If its a matter of making launch, then fine.

Agreed.

If there are no plans to add MP3 support, then add Soundcloud support that also allows background support for music. Then at least I can upload all my sets or tracks to Soundcloud and just stream them through the App when I play videogames.

But assuming this will be patched in later, based upon nothing, is naive methinks.

I see why you think my comments might be a bit naive. I guess what I should have said was that they need to let us know now if this is something permanent or if it will be patched at some point in the future.

I seem to recall playing .mp3 CDs on it. May be wrong...

It doesn't matter because the PS4 is also incapable of playing CD's.

This is LITERALLY the ONLY Playstation branded system that Sony has EVER built that does not include a way for you to playback your personal music collection. No CD, no mp3, no nothing.

Every other Playstation system in existence includes a way for you to play your purchased music.

I now understand why Sony decided against getting CD-playback capability into the system. Music Unlimited is their new "blu-ray trojan horse" for this generation.

It's a feature that I've never used. A home console is not the right place to play your mp3s.
But the lack of this feature is totally stupid and unjustified. Just like the custom wallpapers/backgrounds.
It seems like they're totally focusing around games and online services. The rest at launch will be pretty barebone.
Still I'd make some noise if I had twitter and followed yosp ;)

PS3 did not have this feature at launch it was patched in later. Do not buy a launch system if you expect it to have all features working day one, it does not happen with any major electronic device.

This is a terrible argument. Absolutely awful. You can't seriously think it's acceptable for new consoles to deny features simply because you have an older version that does it. Would you be happy if you bought a new computer and someone said, "Oh, it wont use iTunes unless you pay for it. But your old laptop does. You'll be fine."

If you're going to respond with something along the lines of, "it's fine I don't use iTunes!" Don't bother. It's an analogy.
So music is the back breaker? the lack of backwards compatibly was fine and dandy?

Fucking hell, how dare nintendo not include a SNES cartridge port on the Wii U.
Simply denying features because you have the older version, pft!

This is not a good argument. Just because you feel that way, doesn't mean eveyone does.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean you can't empathize with a fellow gamer. Sometimes we just wanna race around in GT or GTA and listen to our music. It's a cheap thing to implement so why not? I can't stand people that say they don't want a feature just because they don't plan to use it.

I won’t be canceling any pre-orders because I buy consoles for the games, but this is nothing but a huge step backwards with Sony squandering the goodwill it earned these past few months.
These are not "not available at launch" features, these are design decisions.
PS3 a better media device than PS4? Who would've thought?

How does that change things. You would cancel a new gaming system because it does not have DLNA support out the door? PS3 did not either.

After reading this news, I am now leaning toward selling my launch system instead of keeping it. I don't have enough room to keep both the PS4 and PS3 connected, and I use the PS3's media streaming capabilities and the music visualizer pretty frequently.

They will patch this in at a later date. If they couldn't/wouldn't get their own Pulse headsets running for launch, you think they are going to bother with DLNA support?

The launch software isn't that great anyway, so I may as well wait and see if the DLNA does eventually get patched in rather than just buying the system and crossing my fingers.

Do I really need to go grab a statistic about custom soundtracks in the age of the iPhone? You also need me to go fetch a statistic on the number of people riding horses instead of driving cars?

All you need to do is watch a random stream on Twitch to understand how important music is. It's probably more important to hardcore gamers than any other demographic.

This is why I'm not an early adopter for anything. I guess it's a good thing we find out about this now, instead of finding out on our own.

It's so weird considering they pioneered the whole multimedia console thing...

Yeah, it sucks, bro. I guess maybe personal music is a last gen feature...

I hope my PS3 slim doesn't stop working like my 60 GB. I love PS3 media server. Streaming FLAC and MKV files is AWESOME. I'm doing this for years.

Really a shame you can't on PS4. Sony dropped the ball with this.

WHAT is this?!

fucking BULLSHIT. who do i write an angry e-mail to?

my console MUST play mp3s, no other way around it. this is utterly ridiculous.

what is "Music Unlimited"? how unlimited is it exactly, can i listen to my friend's band through it? or any 90s hiphop? obscure hardcore punk?

I bet it doesn't have Perfume's stuff on it. Or, say anything from old shrapnel records, or even half the stuff I even listen to.

It explains the no DLNA support to, god forbid I stream audio from my fucking phone to the sound system in my house.

Actually, on a personal note and recommendation, Killzone 2 benefited greatly from using Ed Harrison's Neotokyo soundtrack. Shit was amazing during play, the moody themes fit the levels perfectly. I just checked MU and Ed Harrison is in there, but my $12 MU sub runs out a couple weeks after PS4 launch. I own the MP3s, I should just be able to use them freely on KZSF

Am I the only one who doesn't care at all if my game console can play music? If I want to listen to music while I play I just mute the tv and put my iPod on.

If they have intentions of adding features post launch, they need to amend their FAQ to say so. Simply answering questions with "no" gets people pissed off that features their previous Playstation systems have will not be carried over to PS4.

Right now based on the simple answers of "no", we are left to believe that Sony went this direction on purpose. That even CD playback being omitted was done to push the PS4 customer into paying for the Music Unlimited service.

Your in the minority in this fight. Plus all that stuff you listed are hardware/architecture issues. It sucks, but people understood.

I'd be okay with this if Music Unlimited was free with PS+ or sumsuch, but it isn't. It's pretty expensive as well.

Urgh.

It's not just a matter of cash.
Most music i'd be interested in using during a game just isn't available there.

Do they have the Shenmue soundtrack i used with Virtua Fighter 5? No they don't.
Do they have the Léon: The Professional soundtrack, i used with Rainbow Six Vegas? No they don't.

I don't stream music or play mp3's on my console, but this sucks for those that do. I don't think it will stay like this forever though. And please whoever compared this to whatever Xbox One has done with DRM and such, don't make me laugh.

Not to mention the service being offered only a limited amount of countries + lack of international sections.
