PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Do I really need to go grab a statistic about custom soundtracks in the age of the iPhone? You also need me to go fetch a statistic on the number of people riding horses instead of driving cars?
Why would I listen to music on my iPhone when I have a full speaker system hooked up to the TV that can do a better job?

Your rebuttals to everyone in this thread are beginning to cross the crazy border.

I'm so happy this was never something i used on 360, and never wanted on PS3. I don't understand why anyone would want to play nick kershaw* while an epic space battle is occurring in killzone. It sucks for those who use their console as a jukebox, but thankfully that ain't me.

*or anything other then the ost that is present in the game.

I, uh ... play games besides Killzone? Try playing hours of Forza or Gran Turismo with their soundtrack, it's awful. Or sports games, or fighters, or screwing around in open world games ... I mean. I get it. YOU don't use it. But there are A LOT of people that do.

I seriously do not understand what they could possibly gain from taking out DLNA.

Does anyone have any idea ?

Selling you a service that provides that video/music you would have streamed.

It's not just a matter of cash.
Most music i'd be interested in using during a game just isn't available there.

Do they have the Shenmue soundtrack i used with Virtua Fighter 5? No they don't.
Do they have the Léon: The Professional soundtrack, i used with Rainbow Six Vegas? No they don't.
Okay, you're just bragging about your soundtrack-to-videogame parings. But point taken.

(Those are some FUCKING AWESOME combinations by the way.)

Because it's a 400 dollar machine that prob cost like 800 dollars to make. There's no reason for it not to play mp3's. What if someone doesnt own anything that cna play mp3's and this is their first "multimedia" device. There's no justification for the removal of this feature, that extra 2 dollars out a multimillion dollar company to provide a common service isnt going to bankrupt them. Why should the consumer have to worry about their costs anyway?

It costs less than 400 to make, they are trying to squeeze a profit out of there product - how dare they not spend an extra 2 dollars to appease your entitlement! How dare they not spend millions to appease the horse driven chariots of the world!

Are you going to sit there and suggest to me that a person buying this doesn't own a phone? or a tablet? or a PC? The system only works on HDTV's. Everyone that is buying this, owns a multimedia device of one sort or the other.

What consumer listens to music on a videogame system instead of their phone or tablet?

I play music on my PS3 (along with other multimedia) all THE TIME. This is hugely disappointing. And here I was thinking we'd finally get custom soundtracks this gen, lolol. For me this is a huge deal. But, since some of you are saying it can be patched, I'll keep the faith.

So music is the back breaker? the lack of backwards compatibly was fine and dandy?

Fucking hell, how dare nintendo not include a SNES cartridge port on the Wii U.
Simply denying features because you have the older version, pft!

Did I say it was a back breaker? You're welcome to start paying attention to what I, by myself have posted, instead of lumping me in with others at any time.

But yeah, I guess your analogy works if almost every other single piece of technology at the time played SNES cartridges. Or wait, if PS4 added a feature that was more beneficial to the user and experience like a disc drive and DVDs did.

Great analogy. Really nailed it.

Am I the only one who doesn't care at all if my game console can play music? If I want to listen to music while I play I just mute the tv and put my iPod on.

Most games do not need this functionality. But at least with the 360 MS gave the user the ability to listen to whatever they wanted to. Sony was limited by their ram allocation for this functionality (like cross game chat) and that is why very few games had it. Many of us expected Sony to finally give us the functionality that the 360 had with the PS4 and not remove 2005 functionality because of whatever reasons the higher ups at Sony decided.

As someone who likes using custom music in games, this is absolutely terrible. No chance in hell I am ever going to get Music Unlimited, I don't fucking want it. Perhaps there is another reason like mentioned earlier, but if it's just a "fuck you, give us money" situation, I will be extremely disappointed. I am going to scream at Yoshida later.

This is why they're crazy for going through with this. The hackers will work even harder now there is a cause to be fought for, coupled in with the architecture that is closer to PCs and there will be much drama.

Just like with OtherOS being removed from the PS3...
This why I don't get the logic behind this. Do they think that anyone will subscribe to musicxxx just to listen to their mp3s? Everyone can do this on the cheapest phone available.
I bought and own my music collection, if I want to play/stream it to my PS4 I have to buy it AGAIN? Is it available on their service? WTF?

And I'm not playing my music/movies trough PS3 so often. Disgusting.

When the hell did I say that? I wasn't aware the PS4 was a giant bonfire for mp3 capable devices.

Do I really need to go grab a statistic about custom soundtracks in the age of the iPhone? You also need me to go fetch a statistic on the number of people riding horses instead of driving cars?

iPhone?? What would you do with an iPhone in this situation? Serious question...

I think it's a matter of their Home Entertainment eco system. I know my brother has his PS3 connected to a huge system and he plays CDs/MP3s in it all the time. This will be a huge bummer for him.

I see why you think my comments might be a bit naive. I guess what I should have said was that they need to let us know now if this is something permanent or if it will be patched at some point in the future.
Oh, my bit about naivety wasn't aimed at you. It was a general statement. Sorry for being unclear there ;P

This feels more like a cynical money-grab than a scheduling issue.

I have never used this feature on any console, but the option should be present for those who want it. Personally I'm miffed about no BT headset support, since their answers earlier this year seemed to indicate compatibility.

The worst part is he recognizes it's entirely an anti-consumer policy yet he's feverishly defending it.

I understand if anyone cancels their preorder. No DLNA is abhorrent, inexcusable... whatever other adjective that's a synonym for fucking disgusting.

Guess i'll wait to see if they announce plans to patch it in, otherwise I just don't know if its worth it

I got a MU subscription when it was $12 and use it on the Vita all the time, it's really handy to have a streaming service on there because of lack of space. I hope we can at least use it in the background while it's streaming, instead of only offline like in the Vita.
And I hope they do plan to add DLNA support and all that in the future, MU will cut it at launch maybe, but it's not enough a year or two down the line.

LOL, what is this horseshit? Tons of people do this. It's one of the best features of the OG Xbox and 360, mostly used in-game but I used my OG Xbox as a media hub because you could burn music onto it from a CD, I didn't have my PC hooked up to my main stereo system back then. I used the PS3 as a streaming device to my HDTV which was hooked up to my main speakers. A lot of people do this. It's not uncommon.

Is that a serious question, or you being sarcastic?

Hopefully the DLNA features get added eventually. Far from a dealbreaker, since i already have 3 other devices that can do that.

The MP3 outrage is weird to me, though. Haven't had the desire to play music on a game console since the Sega CD.

Don't listen to music on the ps3 so I don't care, but it's still stupid since I know that there is a lot of people that do. What's DLNA, is that media server? Because if it is then it really is huge bullshit

It IS an excuse, but what I said is still true. The popularity of a feature IS a factor, and saying it's the same as producing a car with AC is not accurate.

Also removing Linux was arguably worse, since it was present in a product one already bought and then removed from that. However it was such a barely used feature that it ended being footnote. MP3 playback is not that.

I wasn't comparing it to AC and your point about popularity is a fair one. Linux removal was definitely worse but my point is that if it's not considered a key feature then it's easier to justify removal. It's the principle of it, even if Linux users on PS3s are far fewer than those who stream media / play MP3s.

Who DOESN'T hook up their iPod to their car stereo and blast their music all the way to their entertainment center?

Can I just say this thread has opened my eyes to how many people use their PS3 multimedia services that often. The only thing I use mine for are occasional screenshots or bluray movies.

Ya its media server, and yes it is total bullshit

Erm, the ones replying to this thread saying just that?

I really hate the "I never listen to music through a console, so I don't see what the big deal is" defense posts.

There should never be an excuse for basic functionality to be stripped from your console from one generation to the next. Even simple DVD players are capable of playing mp3's. I had a car stereo in 1999 that could play mp3's loaded onto a CD. It's fucking ludicrous for basic features like Compact Disc playback and mp3 playback to be removed from a system with so much power.

We can play .mp4 videos off a thumb drive on PS4 but can't play .mp3 AUDIO off a thumb drive?

I knew Microsoft was pushing their system to be a multimedia machine and Sony wasn't, but I didn't expect Sony to remove really fucking basic media functionality from their machine to come across as even worse for media than the PS3.

Who does listen to music at home on their phone or tablet? The speakers at shit. I'm not saying this is a deal breaker, and if it's going to be patched soon, that's fine. But yeah...I'm starting to reconsider my pre order. It's a prettybig deal for me. I use the 360 to stream music to the living room today, and I plan on putting it in the kid's room to make space for the ps4.

With watch dogs getting pushed back, and this... we'll see.
