PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

It's not just a matter of cash.
Most music i'd be interested in using during a game just isn't available there.

Do they have the Shenmue soundtrack i used with Virtua Fighter 5? No they don't.
Do they have the Léon: The Professional soundtrack, i used with Rainbow Six Vegas? No they don't.

I like you, you get it.

This sort of sucks. I real enjoyed being able to play my music while playing Need for Speed and Burnout on the PS3. Oh and Wipeout, that had great effects on the music while playing.

Selling you a service that provides that video/music you would have streamed.

That would be a seriously arm-wrestling move. The average Joe's movie collection is minuscule compared to what is available on those services.

This does not incentivize me in subscribing to those services. It's only pissing me off and makes me not want to give them my money.

Well, aside from the occasional "I use my console to play games - be like me" comment, I'm glad that most of you aren't defending or spinning this. Maybe GAF isn't so biased after all. This is indefensible.

And you know, many people who play driving games in cockpit decided not to pick up Grid 2. Is that strange to you?
Why would it seem strange for people to skip out on a game, because it didn't have an intended game feature? Got another example besides a false equivalency?

Sony's well within their rights to remove features or put them behind paywalls. And to the extent that those decisions negatively impinge on a user's experience those users are more than reasonable to skip out on that product.
And I am well within my rights to make fun of those whiny manbabies, that are difficult to appease and make purchasing decisions in line of my dogs intelligence when he goes to take a shit.

OK, I think you just might be projecting here. A bit.
I just read through 10 pages of meltdowns and cancellations, dumbstruck by the stupid and the entitled - who cancelled their purchase, because .01 of it was wrong and said fuck it all. The same who complain about always online DRM, DLC, online passes, and the casualization of videogames, who don't know when to pick a fight and unknowing highlighted why game makers no longer cater towards them - because they are whiny manbabies with super-sensitive-12-year-old-girl-feelings.

I for one never play music while gaming. I know many people that do. I do however throw a BBQ and put music on via my console quite often. Throw on the graphical effects, boom instant party. Well the beer helps.

I also want to play my music, you know that music that I've paid for in the past, music I've collected and honed to a samurai sword of audio delight. Are there workarounds sure but were going backwards here.

What's next no Netflix? You have to watch shows but pay renting them because reasons?

This is a pay wall, soon you will have to subscribe to 1080p ;P

Always cracks me up reading about people threatening to cancel their preorders. Much like how people are favoring speciality services (IE: itunes, instagram, twitter), people should be moving away from one-stop shops and expecting a game console to offer music playback. I don't rely upon my PS3 for movie viewing, I have a HTPC with XBMC. I have bluetooth streaming setup from my phone to my stereo.

It's wasteful to expect every device under my TV to playback MP3s, I have a specialty device for that. Get in control of your living rooms, don't expect ubiquitous solution, build the solution up in components.

It's kind of funny how the biggest negatives to the PS4 are about trivial and arbitrary things such as mp3s and multimedia services. Its sucks that it does not have the option but these things are being blown over the top. Do some of you even remember why you buy consoles in the first place? Last time I checked this site was a dedicated hardcore gaming forum and that should take priority above all things.

Because losing features with no compensation is never a good thing.

Now if the reason mp3s are out is because of legal issues related to the game recording features like someone proposed a few pages back, then that would be a little more valid, since you're gaining a feature you didn't previously have. It'd be better if they gave up the option to choose though.

That even CD playback being omitted was done to push the PS4 customer into paying for the Music Unlimited service.

It seems very likely that Sony went with a DVD+BR drive which means probably a cheaper (and potentially either thinner or more reliable) disc drive (CD needing a different laser and spin speed) but also would rule out any sort of CD/PS1 disc support. It's a whole different issue to MP3/DLNA/etc which can be coded in. Not supporting BT audio is weird and I wonder if software support can be added for that.

Anyway, nothing has been taken out software side, because it's a whole brand new OS. Everything has to be added in; there's no easy way to just recompile under x86. That's why there are no dynamic themes, either - you can't port over the old stuff and the new UI is so bloody new they probably don't even have an SDK for building on top of it.

That being said, tornados like this are good to make Sony realize what they need to either (a) support or (b) admit they are going to support (it's very common for features to be planned, but be so far down the pipe they'd rather not admit it)

It costs less than 400 to make, they are trying to squeeze a profit out of there product - how dare they not spend an extra 2 dollars to appease your entitlement! How dare they not spend millions to appease the horse driven chariots of the world!

Are you going to sit there and suggest to me that a person buying this doesn't own a phone? or a tablet? or a PC? The system only works on HDTV's. Everyone that is buying this, owns a multimedia device of one sort or the other.

What consumer listens to music on a videogame system instead of their phone or tablet?

How short sighted. Custom sound tracks are a huge relief on certain game types. Who the hell wants to listen to the same 15-20 songs on an infinite loop while playing a racing game? Do you like to listen to a lot of different music while you drive, or do you only listen to the same 3-5 CDs forever? Its also nice while playing online competitive games. Its also great for games that have 100s of hours invested into them. I probably would quit PC gaming if I couldn't listen to my own music while games. There are some amazing sound tracks out there, but they get old after a while.

This is a terrible fucking decision and Sony better fucking fix this shit.

Patch this shit, Sony. Along with background image ability. Yes, I don't use them much but I don't like it when the machine lacks what I consider basic multimedia ability. I'm sure the machine can play MP3 that's why they include the Music Unlimited thing. So stop gating it.

I'm starting to wonder if I should just wait for the next iteration of PS4 before buying one. With the lack of games that I want to play and now this, I am wondering how much I'm going to use the machine. I really do want to own PS4 but not when it's this incomplete.

It is not clear. All the PR reps and MS people in the know have been silent since this news broke.

Yeah. This is worrying. A rare chance for MS to rub something in Sony's face and they're not jumping on this?! MS needs all the goodwill they can get. They should be all over this.

It doesn't matter because the PS4 is also incapable of playing CD's.

This is LITERALLY the ONLY Playstation branded system that Sony has EVER built that does not include a way for you to playback your personal music collection. No CD, no mp3, no nothing.

Every other Playstation system in existence includes a way for you to play your purchased music.

I now understand why Sony decided against getting CD-playback capability into the system. Music Unlimited is their new "blu-ray trojan horse" for this generation.
Exactly. Its almost as if they trashed every part of the old Sony culture with their recent changes. It frustrating. I used CD on my PS1, DVD on my PS2, BD on my PS3, etc. Now, not only was physical video media being considered unnecessary, but MP3s are incompatible, too. And no "news" of a Day 1 patch, either. Its disappointing.

Have we found out MS stance on the music stuff and DLNA? I find it hard to believe the company who tried to do all those lockdown moves with the reveal were also gonna freely allow streaming of content from the computer.

I could be wrong though.

Seriously the people saying you should use your phone or ipod. It's like using and then using your ipod to listen to music. It's ridiculous, if you don't have headsets for you computer or tablet etc fine, but it's logical sense to listen to music from the device your using, if it's capable of doing it which it should.

All you need to do is watch a random stream on Twitch to understand how important music is. It's probably more important to hardcore gamers than any other demographic.

The streams on twitch don't use music through the console... and the average streamer isn't indicative towards the average gamer.

This is just madness, I think I need to step away. People are acting as if a new console during the rush to launch does not have certain features prioritized over others. You know, like the ability to make sure games run smoothly, do not crash, network works acceptably. From the rumors we have heard they are having a hard enough time with those basic features. Yet, we have individuals running around screaming that they are going to cancel their preorders because DLNA is not supported at launch. Sony does not have support for their very own Pulse headset at launch, and there is no timeline as to when it will be supported (other than 'soon').

This FAQ just came out, can we give it 24-48hrs before we start canceling preorders?

Yeah, besides the usual couple of people who feel the need to tell us what to feel, this has been what any console owner would hope a thread about this subject matter would be. It sucks. Not the end of the world, but still is awful.

Does anyone know if the Xbone will act as a media server. Don't really care about the MP3s too much.

Windows Media Extender isn't compatible. But we don't know if it supports DLNA/MP3/Etc yet.

So we have people projecting hate at a company who is being legitimately unfair to them, and you in turn project hate on said people.

Nice.

People wouldn't be reacting so strongly if Sony said these features were coming later.

Seems fair. Where is my apology.

mp3 man, MP3 I don't care if your in a rush to push out a product practically everything supports MP3 at launch, in this day and age your not a modern electronic entertainment device if you don't support it.

I am well within my rights to make fun of those whiny manbabies.

Go away. People are going to exaggerate. But it doesn't detract from the complete ridiculousness that stripping away basic features is. You're annoyingly fighting a good cause here because some are rubbing you the wrong way. Our gaming systems now more than ever are also media machines, we have a reason to be disappointed.

good thing i keep all my old consoles, shit my ps2 can read mp3's off a usb stick and read my pc files with samba.guess my ps3 will be next to the ps4 for this reason

Why would it seem strange for people to skip out on a game, because it didn't have an intended game feature? Got another example besides a false equivalency?
Its not a false equivalency, its the very same reasoning.

Grid 1 had cockpit views and Grid 2 removed it because according to their metrics only a small percentage of players used that view. Some people got upset and skipped out on that game for exactly that reason.

There's no reason for YOU to freak out if other people decide that Sony's ditching of mp3 playback and new subscription paywall for background music is a deal-breaker. However "fringe" the usage is, when it affects your enjoyment it affects your enjoyment, and that's reason enough for disappointment and canceled orders.

I agree with Sony I mean they make a console for gamers but this is not a open source system this is not android remember that you cant just do anything and everything you want. There are tons of devices that will allow you to listen to you music.
They gotta make money on the service they offer Makes sense.

It's not just a matter of cash.

Just chiming in to say that this guy knows what he's doing!

It sucks, but I look at the features the PS3 and even Vita had at launch compared to now and it is amazing how far they have come. Like Kagari said the meltdowns will look foolish later. Launching a console is tough and there are features with higher priority than others.

Someone get this console warrior a medal.

Albert Penello said months ago that the Xbox Music app could rip CDs.

And Microsoft already showed off streaming as a Windows 8 feature. We're not sure whether it'll work with other OSs, though.

Um seriously: fuck this.

Streaming was a huge functionality ps3 for me and was a major reason many friends of mine got on board. Why would you regress your OS like this? For these devices to be a hub, streaming should be a fucking given - I have a massive music library, is shouldn't have to subscribe to their shit service. Particularly given there are vastly better ones like Rdio. Stuffing shit down people's throats like this smacks of Microsoft.

This is a massive misstep sony. Fix. This. Shit.
