Only if you want to go overboard with hyperbole.

That being said, I hope we get MP3 in the future on top of DLNA.
I don't think it is hyperbole. When it was a fact that CD playback was removed I almost expected it to have every other digital alternative plus lossless formats too and nas support. And we got nothing. It's really depressing when you go from PS3. Everything was free and had great functionality. Now we get a multiplayer paywall, a music stream service paywall and I truly wouldn't be surprised if we get a gaikai/back comp paywall too.

It's not surprising. MS have been getting beat up the last few days (and months really) over all of their fuck ups that when something negative comes out about Sony, people want to blow it up to the same level when it is nowhere near. Is Sony trying to push people into MS shitty? Damn right it is. Is this the deal-breaker people want it to be? It really isn't no matter how much whining happens.

That's why I've noted things about how sensitive things are on this forum.

The first bit of bad PS4 news even if just regarding the lack of a damn background causes a stir.

I'd be more upset if things were going wrong on how my core experience would be affected and thankfully all that is good one Sony's end.

I agree with parts of your point and thanks for at least coming with more reason.

I won't argue about everything but stuff like paywall with Plus is something I've been on board with for a couple of years on PS3. The MP3 and DNLA (which should be fixed later) I'm on the same page but I digress in saying the console needs to function at it's core and it looks like Sony has that in hand. Not sure about MSFT but this thread isn't about them.

I'm a sony fanboy, no matter how unbiased I try to be, but this is a fuckup and a half right here. Consoles are media centers these days, it's just a fact. This console is NOT a media center whatsoever, unless you pay hundreds a month.

Not disagreeing but I wouldn't call it a major mess up when these things will improve much like MSFT will get their tools in better order post Xbone release.

I understand DLNA could be coming but the answer was an emphatic no.

Sony founded DLNA and as far as I know still sits on the alliance. Just a weird way to get the information out.

Are they trying to start a new standard unrelated to DLNA?

I believe it will probably come in the future but what a weird way to answer an FAQ the company itself wrote. I'm sure all these answers were well thought out and not just thrown out there.

No they are trying to sell you a crappy $60 music service plain and simple.

Yeah...the idea that this is just some thing that they didn't have time to get around to is pretty silly.

The lack of any audio playback (unless you subscribe to their shitty proprietary music service) is absolutely on purpose.
Yeah. I really have a hard time seeing this any other way.

The more I think about it, I seriously doubt that there will be no mp3 support... I hope, I don't know. It can't be possible.

Agree there but maybe it's not a priority at first but you have to know they are going to patch things up.

XMB/PS3 in the first year was not that good in terms of functionality but look at how far we've come since.

Personally, I'd be more than happy waiting since I don't use the feature anyway, but if it turns out that Sony insists on not supporting mp3 to force their damn service down our throats I'll be pissed off. It's a matter of principle.

This is terrible and wont go over well for them. Not enough people are going to subscribe to a music service if all they want to do is play the music they already have. I predict mp3 playback will be patched in at some point. This is a bonehead move.

you honestly don't think the guy writing "No MP3 support" didn't even for a second think about how consumers were going to react? Really?

Correct.

If he did know then he failed to talk to those in charge to let them know that some type of announcement concerning the reasoning behind these missing features would be recommended to avoid negative internet reaction. Really, this should be known to anyone who has taken Microsoft's class on how not to do PR correctly after the announcement of the X1.

Didn't Microsoft come out earlier this year and say Xbox One won't function as a media server?

If both consoles are dropping support...wow. Next gen indeed.

Same thing xbone did, a nice big 180 on everything they stood by... damage was already done though.

The priority is making money with Music Unlimited. I can't believe this is just some technical hurdle. They will say it is that when they are forced to include MP3 support in a few months but this is intentional.

What the fuuuuck. There's a difference between being a gaming machine and being a media centre, but this is taking the piss.

Music is SO important to me, and honestly i didn't think for a second that either console would have anything less that the ability for me to choose what music i want to listen to whilst playing a game.

I am in utter disbelief that this is true, to the extent that i will have to wait until tomorrow before i make a decision.

This has to change down the line, because they will make it happen, but if the functionality isn't there at launch, then i have to wonder what angle the OS was designed from in the first place.

Kagari hinted that all things would be worked out in due time. I'm saying if that is the case(and i believe it). Why would they just say no right now?

I guess you could make the case that they want to cause a rush on MU and then dissapoint everyone who signed up when they do add DLNA.

Or maybe MU is going to be free for ps4 owners with ps+?

the lack of DLNA is bumming me out. I wanted to be able to replace the PS3 with PS4 for this duty as the PS3 sounds like a jet engine after 20 minutes.

Guess I’ll keeping around the PS3 in my setup for longer than I expected.

Good thing it's a gaming device then.

yes, it is. But I think it’s fair to say that not many expected such a regression of features from the PS3 - which was also a gaming device first.

No Windows Media Server support I think. Didn't they even drop it from the Home version of Windows 8? I think they intend for you to stream using a different facet of the OS. If they limit it to Win 8 and and 8.1...blech. Screw them.

It doesn't surprise me at all, considering how Sony didn't give a fuck about custom soundtracks for the PS3 like the 360 had. When shit hits the fan and Sony says emphatically No MP3s, I won't even be mad.

Spare me the lecture bruh. In the grand scheme of Sony selling PS4s to consumers this holiday season, this isn't going to be as big a problem as you think it is. If you read my comment, I even acknowledged how shitty pushing people into a paywall for music is. Doesn't change the fact that it's not harming the core purpose of the console and that is to play games.

Disappointing.

I rarely used my PS3 and 360 for music though so it's not the worst thing ever.

But it's always strange to see such a basic function that even a fridge can do these days not performed by a gaming and "media" console.

This. This kind of sucks because I do like to put music currently on my PS3 and use it as a jukebox when I have people over. I mean, I have even ripped cds right to the PS3 hdd as well as streamed from a server, so this is kind of a big deal.

But there is no way I am going to subscribe to a music service.

Good thing every gaming device comes standard with these features now. Let's pretend the last 5-10 years of gaming hasn't happened right?

edit- Wii, 360, ps3, ps2, xbox (the first one, not the bone), vita, psp, 3ds, wii u, pc, and I'm sure more that I missed can all do what the ps4 can't, period.

The xbox stuff was more about games and different policies that fundamentally changed ownership. This is playing music in the background while you play games. Not really a fair comparison but I hope they do a 180 and add the feature. Anyone not buying the system over this is princess and the pea'ing the fuck out of the situation though.

For a company that used to be the king of audio, it's sad to see them neglect it so much this time around.

No MP3, no CD support, no streaming, no visualizer and I would assume, no FLAC or even ATRAC.

Your whole "it should just be about the games" stance isn't needed. I don't think anyone seriously will forego getting a PS4 because it lacked a basic support of MP3s, however that doesn't make it any less facepalm-able.

No Mp3 support, Sony must be kidding! they can't make people buy music unlimited by restricting them playing their own music collections. Just so dumb of Sony! And no external hard drive support? what is the whole idea to attach 2 USBs port to PS4?

Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration.

Honestly this isn't Sony's first electronic device launch and it won't be the last, regardless what they say common sense would dictate the lack of MP3 was purposeful, DLNA probably was just do to lack of time, but MP3 is so core and practically always there at launch for media devices even on Sony devices that there's no way a company like Sony would have run out of time on it while also having their music unlimited service fully functional at launch.

it's simply foa too convenient. They wanted to push that service plain and simple, lets just hope they decided to keep MP3 support and add it in later.

Haha! What? Why? That's just silly.
Music playback isn't a big priority to me, but local files and Spotify is what I'd care about if I'd ever want to bother. I'm not gonna pay for this stupid Unlimited thing just to play music on my PS4.
