Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | October 2013 | Ver 2000, Batman and some Angry Birds

Alright, the Lone Survivor sale is tempting me. How is the game? I know virtually nothing about it other than it looks very cool visually and it's a survival horror game.

The UI works with the touchscreen and buttons and the app does have a lot of options. You can listen to old recorded radio shows and everything from music to sports and news.
Had some errors/stutters probably due to connection problems to a station but else it runs fine and fluid. Only background playback is really missed.

This is out?

This is out?

Apparently not in the US. Just checked the UK store and it's £0.79p for regulars, free for PS+ ... but you get to keep it forever. Not seen it done like that before but it is an app (51MB).

Wow it's pretty neat, might start using radio more often - although it might be nice to have to the option to turn off the screen or something. - the background does change like every minute or two.

Shame you can't listen to it while browsing the web or something. Still, pretty nice for finding stations and that.

There is like a talk section, with a video game category - podcasts, stations. giantbombcast and all

let's see how the battery holds - bit annoying if you pause and resume it starts from the beginning with the podcasts. It seems nice enough for radio.

Finished Lone Survivor earlier today, what a fucking AWESOME game. Anyone who likes survival horror should get it.

Just chiming in, if you like survival horror, GET LONE SURVIVOR.

Just got my platinum, and it was amazing. Great throwback to the golden era of Silent Hill.

...
Take, for example, Lone Survivor. It's presented in 2D pixel art as well, but it's done with a loving care in order to match the art style with the atmosphere. I haven't really reached that cohesive part of Corpse Party where the art adds to the atmosphere. So far it just distracts.

Few recent impressions, the search feature isn't great but still pretty useful, I remember reading a few posts talking about it well - the thread moves so fast though I know. Haven't played it myself and it's not my favourite genre but after the impressions I'll be giving it a go eventually.

Crunchyroll app will be released near Vita TV JP launch.

Do you work for Crunchyroll? I don't believe they've stated that, and I don't believe Crunchyroll is even available in Japan for it to be a "well duh" Vita TV launch app.

Official blog is not up yet but I think the Invizimals IP is only popular in the latin coutries (Spain, Italy, France,...) so it's maybe only available there for the moment. There is a trivial version for Furmins, you'll be able to make your own opinion.

Sony may be waiting for the TV show to land TV deals in other markets before launching the new games.

If you like survival horror and would enjoy a game that has SH2 vibes all over it, then you will definitely like this one.

Rumour for now. A CR rep says that the release date is "soon", and people speculated that they will release with the other JP Vita TV apps, like Hulu.

So I got a $50 coupon from eBay and I'm thinking about using it to buy a slightly used Vita. I'm thinking about just the hardware, no big lots or even memory. I think I can find a good deal on a used card by itself from someone who's upgrading to a 64gb.

Anything I should be looking for besides a great image of the screen? Is this a bad idea? I was all about buying new on or around Black Friday to help support the New Sony Way but I could get quite a deal this way.

I would opt for a new Vita and use the $50 ebay coupon for accessories/memory card myself. The thought of going through the process only to get a burned in screen or something else horrible would put me off.

Would definitely be up for this, only had a Vita for a couple of weeks but loving Wipeout and would be great to have a competition on here.

Also if anyone still plays wipeout regularly feel free to add me, my friends list is very bare at the moment after spending all this generation with just a 360..

PSN ID: savageturnip

Added, and yeah I'm always down for Near challenges.

Oh wow. Uncharted and Gravity Daze are free with PS+. I was about to buy the latter. :O

You can buy the DLCs :)

I'm not very good at Wipeout, but if VitaGAF want some races, i don't care if I lose haha. I'll add you later.

That looks really nice! Thanks! I assume you can continue listening while the Vita is in sleep mode?

I haven't beat Lone Survivor yet, but it is Silent Hill, if Silent Hill was made during the 16bit era. I really, really like it so far, and it's genuinely creepy, despite the 16bit visuals (like Corpse Party, actually).

I just haven't had much time to sink into it, because I want a nice night where I can get under the covers, put my headphones on, and go at it.

That doesn't make any sense, Crunchyroll is not a Japanese service. Hell it's probably even blocked in Japan because it would conflict with domestic broadcasting deals.

No, the music will stop when you hit the power or PS button. The music resumes on the same point though, even with live radio. Your Vita screen can turn off automatically and the music keeps playing though.
Just found the videogame podcast section. Giant Bombcast, Weekend Confirmed, CAGcast, Retronauts etc all there.

Good but not great. Would rank it among Thomas Was Alone and Stealth Bastard (funnily, all three are ported by Curve) but far away from indie greatness like Hotline Miami, Spelunky, Guacamelee and Velocity Ultra.

The funny thing about that, to me, is that I really liked Thomas Was Alone and Stealth Bastard, but didn't care much for Spelunky and Velocity Ultra.

Guacamelee on the other hand, is one of my favorite handheld games ever now. I frigging love that game, and wish more 2D Metroidvania/Platformers had the combat mechanics of Guacamelee. I was so surprised at the depth and skill combat took in that game.

Batman Blackgate is really short, it's a 4~5 hour game (I wasn't rushing it, it's just too easy and you waste your time scanning things) and I don't really want to replay it on new game+ mostly because how boring the exploration is.

and I hate to use this term but it feel like an android game but it does feel like one of the gameloft clones, it's really is there is just no depth here in the gameplay (combat) and everything lacking. this is something I should've got for my Nvidia Shield for $5.

I think the the problem is lack of vision as the game don't know what it want to be, 2.5 levels done badly most of the game, freeflow combat is a downgrade and feel flat, it's not a full or real Metroidvania game and it's not a full or real Arkham game.

I'll try post my full impressions on this in the game OT when I'm not tired, people need to not waste their money on this.

Toto, why u no listen to my advice?
I warned you about the Batman. :(
.

I really should listen more to people.

I really should listen more to people.

Quoted for posterity. ;)

The DLC missions show up as you are playing the game, so I would recommend going through the game with the DLC installed.

YES. THIS. SO MUCH THIS.
IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT GRAVITY RUSH AND YOU'RE EVEN THINKING OF GETTING THE DLC, BUY THEM BEFORE YOU PLAY VERY FAR INTO THE GAME.

Maid pack - after mission 4
Spy pack - after mission 11
Military pack - after mission 17

They fit the flow of the story and stuff where they slot in and become available. I still think I wouldn't have had the interest or the desire to go back and play them in one fell swoop after I finished the game.

I enjoyed the game, although I felt my gung-ho playthrough was the weakest, so try not to go all Rambo on your first run :)

I finally got the platinum in Lego: Lord of the Rings, in times like this I am happy to have PS Plus, the game was fun but in no way was worth the 30 euros they were asking, not even 20, the controls are bad and the camera terrible, I would have felt bad if I had purchased it.

Wow, I wasn't aware of this. Guess I'll pick them up before I start playing. Thanks!

They really are sort of part of the story and felt like things that were naturally in the game in a way. Plus they help you level up further and give you more XP so that you're stronger toward the end when some of the missions can be rather annoying. Sometimes you might not be able to do a mission right out, but having it there is always nice too...

It's not necessary, but I know for me it was imperative that I had bought them before hand because of how they unlock as the story progresses -- it adds diversity in a way so it feels a little more like a GTA sandbox game in a way.
So the latter two DLCs only open up once you meet the military in the story... and since they're kind of side stories, they felt natural to do then instead of "let's take a fully powered up and maxed cat and go do this spy/military mission"...

Again, not necessary, but I think the experience is better if you do.

which groups do you recommend? deadfish seems like one of the most prominent.

Yea, I mostly use Deadfish as most of their releases works on the vita. I think it's just older releases that might not work on it. But other than that, I think they're ace encoder group as their 720p/1080p stuff looks great on the vita.

I downloaded Stealth Bastard (because PS+) and I didn't specially like it. Still, I tried the Spelunky demo and it's really good. I'll buy it soon.

A few minutes ago I've played Lumines for the first time. Some serious epileptic stuff thrown there. There are times when everything starts to shine and you don't know if look away or keep playing. It's kinda cool for a pick and play, imo.

I was always on the fence with Blackgate. Guess its a no go. Thanks, saving money.

I'll play it for a little bit when I'm done messing around with Frobisher. I'd like to know what I'm getting into first before buying DLC.

Also, I just s-ranked Welcome Park. I am now an expert on all things Vita.

Well, the first DLC (maid) shows up in the story after mission 4, I think... and the next one isn't until like mission 11.

So you have some time before you decide if you like the game enough to get the DLC to go with it. :)

I forgot, who is the one making the Tearaway thread? I don't see him on the OT list thread. I see Borderlands 2 for Vita hasn't been taken, I might snag that.

EDIT: If Tearaway isn't taken, I'll take it.

Wow, I thought someone took Tearaway after Toto made the graphics thing. Guess I will end up taking the challenge with Tearaway as my first OT.

Do you know how to do good graphics Cyborg? A beautiful game like Tearaway deserves a beautiful OT.

Make sure you use Toto's N64 cartridge. :)

I haven't done that in ages but I have a lot assets that we can use. Btw congrats on your platinum.

Make sure you use Toto's N64 cartridge. :)

Did you even have to ask :p

Whelp, I thought the promotion for the $10 dollars back ended on the 31st. I was $5 off for another $10 :l

Make sure you use Toto's N64 cartridge. :)
That's a must!

Alright. Let's make this one darn good OT!

Thanks! Gravity Rush is a great game, so I had a blast completing it. I'll complete the DLC next, but I might start Killzone before that.

About time someone stepped up. It would have been a shame if Tearaway didn't get an OT. Good luck!

Do we know if Borderlands 2 Vita is the GotY version yet?

lemme know if you need any art assets - I did the guacamelee OT and assisted the soul sacrifice OT

Help me, I am in 64gb migration hell!

Haha that will be me on Friday hopefully, still cannot be bothered to prepare even though my mind has suggested it a few times today. Enjoy - the card and space I mean :)

Mine is in China, from Japan. I'd be impressed if it got here Friday, which is what the tracking says.

Btw Toto, I'm playing the WRC4 demo again...it's pretty fun you know. I'm not seeing the framedrops I was before either :S -__- Tried all the different cameras, been playing the Italy track a few times now.
I will get it on sale or if they add in customisable controls. I'm always in first person, I'm not going to use the camera at all hardly, why am I limited to R+L digital acceleration and braking. Bit lame for these days imo, and since it's designed like that I feel like the traction physics won't be changed if they do add analogue driving :/ Or at least let me change it to face buttons, vita triggers suck.

The demo sure is fun though. With a sale I think.

When I finally break down and upgrade my 16GB card to 64, I'll just backup saves (Vita to the cloud, PSP to PC) and redownload all games/apps from the store.

Copying an entire card to PC and back to the new one would take a decade or so.

Yeah, it was going to take over 8 hours to back up.
I went with the approach of backing up games that had DLC (Soul Sacrifice, SFxT, Touch My Katamari, LBPVita, etc.) because trying to get all of that stuff back in the DL queue and installed would be aggravating.

Anything else was queued.
I need to put my other card back in, back up the PSP/PSone saves and check what games I'm missing.

My Vita 2000 came in the mail yesterday:
LuWd0ol.jpg

I also bought a 32 GB for all the PS+ goodness.
It's my first Vita and I absolutely love it so far. I tried Spelunky (played it for a while on PS3), Rayman Origins, Wipeout and Hotline Miami, and they looked great.

Did you find all of the secrets? Because if so daaamn :(

I like what I have played so far but it's far from GOTY.

Not sure why you'd go with 32gb instead of 64gb if you were already importing -- the difference in price couldn't have been that much. :)

Weird:
Store shows me as not owning Lumines. I had to go find it from my download list. :|

Don't forget to use as many gifs as possible. Tearaway NEEDS to be seen in motion.

Imo we need new gifs of that video in the 64 thread tbh, some key ones there. Also we have good ones like VanWinkle's gameplay gif, and the water animation bouncing is so cute and well done too. The page is going to be like 50MB :P

-Showing off the open level somehow with a well timed gif, it's the most open level we've seen so far but the annoying (but understandable) thing is the guy goes along one of the set paths and not down the hill, which is visibly accessible but somewhat covered by the fog! But you can see it straight from the start:

It's bigger than it looks here too.

-the pig riding (it's the hog riding from crash bandicoot)
-the lifting the log with fingers to move a tree in your way, which is a really good use imo

I still can't figure out how to do gifs on this mac well I'm afraid, there is a great free and easy program for pc but it sucks on mac - doesn't record when you want it to etc. Forgot the name but it spread around gaf pretty quickly when someone asked how.

there are some really nice earlier trailers as well of the flowers and how they animate by unraveling and that, creating a temporary path

And you can bet your ass I'm going to try hard to put some sourced mario 64 comparison quotes in the first page :P Hopefully I get some more :) I'll be good about it though.

Help me, I am in 64gb migration hell!

lol that was me last week. I noticed that my "saved for offline" music unlimited app custom soundtrack songs were not migrated with the other data. I dont think anyone has mentioned that yet here but it was a bummer as I queue music from that app for wipeout and killzone vita sessions.
