PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

People are really cancelling their pre-order because of no mp3 or dlna support? Now I've seen it all.

I'm pretty damn close. Of course I was on the fence already. DLNA itself isnt the dealbreaker, so no server support at all and the vibe of there being no plans worries me enough. Of course I'd much rather them allow devs to make a ps4 version of xbmc or plex.

This might just be enough for me to cancel and build a living room pc or wait and see if ms lets a xbone plex client onto their app store.

the point of the peeps is that while the news is disappointing, it's nowhere near a dealbreaker for them (and for most people). your thread was an overreaction.

the point of sony is that it will potentially make music unlimited a rival to spotify. they are making a business decision, and while it may suck for a lot of people, sony figures no one is gonna lose sleep over it.
Yes, and as a customer its always nice to feel completely marginalized for expecting a simple feature to be continued, if not expanded upon.

I think both consoles were meant to launch this time next year. But the nose diving sales of current gen sped things up.

They could have just dropped the prices more significantly to compensate, rather than rush out unfinished consoles.

Kinda funny you say that. I would have bought a ps3 this Christmas if they didn't do next gen this year. Launch is sounding more and more lack luster by the day. I'm starting to feel that I've matured and can finally skip a launch. Maybe see what gets patched and what gets pushed to a pay service. Maybe buy in next spring or summer...titan fall and a kinectless sku? A perfect ps4 and the last of us 2?

Maybe Sony just got tired of paying the licensing fee for including an MP3 decoder in their kits? Perhaps they figure this time around they can cut that out while pushing their own service as an alternative and make a little more money down the road. It's ballsy to be sure, but better to start out on that foot and backtrack down the road if it turns out not to be working out for them, then give us everything but decide to nip-tuck at system functionality as the years go by like we had with the PS3.

Also, maybe they'll include playback functionality for royalty free codecs like FLAC.

And to those clamoring for a twitter tantrum... This issue is not even in the same universe as the PS4NoDRM campaign.

So no chance of custom soundtracks? Damn. I'll just mix it in externally through my mixamp with phone/laptop, but im honestly shocked Sony just skipped over it.

Yeah, I did kinda feel that way too...Like custom background and customization is a huge deal to me. I literally go like add on my phones and PS3 changing things up, I really enjoy it, but that was my fault for not expressing myself better. Writing and talking is completely different. You can't expect the internet to interpret you like your friends will.

hmm.. it seems like the people that are thinking about canceling or have canceled their pre-orders didn't really want a PS4 anyway? Seems like a PC would be a better option for them.

Uh yes. I consider it basic functionality required for a modern console. I also easily steam half my media via dlna to ps3 currently. This isa huge hit to my intended usage of it.

I guess it doesn't affect me since I don't use mp3's on my PS3(never used custom soundtracks on my 360 either). ONly thing I used the DLNA for was just to copy videos to my PS3. I never really streamed videos.

Considering how heavily Microsoft marketed the Xbox One as an all in one media center don't you find it somewhat odd that this has not already been clarified? Here we are three weeks out from launch and we still do not know.
Yeah I find it somewhat strange that we don't already know this yet. Then again, Microsoft has been pushing the Xbox One as the ultimate media center with its own services(payed). So who knows, maybe there's no DLNA support on the Xbox One either.

wanting a gaming machine does not exclude wanting the ability to have custom soundtracks and mp3. One, it can impact your game experience. And two, it's something that is usually just expected out of our modern systems. It's ridiculous this is even a question.

i think most of us that are poking fun at DLNA being considered a basic feature, not MP3 playback. or changing your username etc.

i can't change my username on Steam. i can only change my display name. same with almost all other account systems i use. DLNA requires certification/licensing. i just really think a lot of people are taking the "basic features of any game console" thing a bit too far. basic MP3 support is absolutely true. but some of the other stuff is a bit of a stretch.

I don't even know how some of you get by considering this is a games console first.

I use DLNA a lot too but since when in this hype train machine for any of these next gen platforms has any of this type of stuff come up until now as if it matters the most right now.

Let me know if this is an issue come next year when this kind of reaction is a thing of the past since it will be all about the games.

All I can say is I will be ignoring the Music Unlimited service if I can't play my own tunes. I'm still as excited as I was a month ago for the PS4. I don't know why this would change anything.

If people have been on board since the reveal then I sure hope it's not because of MP3's and DLNA. Features will come and at a frequent clip. Games are what I care about first. And a functional OS that is fast. PS4 is at that point right now even in dev minus some things being worked on leading into the launch.

Like Spotify.

The only edge I would give to unlimited is that they will be(have) started offering game music and different anime OST. Just hope it makes it to the west with PS4.

Yeah there's some game music on there, haven't looked for any anime OSTs yet but that would be boss. I've recently gotten a lot of anime OSTs because they were just too good, if SMU is the only way to play music on PS4 I can only hope they'll really beef up the library...

Honestly who is going to sign up for music unlimited?
I signed up for it earlier this year when it was $12 (for the year) for PS+ subscribers, I use it on my Vita all the time. Since space is precious thanks to all my gaemz, it's nice to have a streaming service available--would prefer Spotify, but it's all the Vita has. Sadly you can't play in the background while streaming, you have to download the music in an offline playlist to play in the background, but that's not a huge issue. The library is fine but could be a little better. I've heard that the current price is around $42 for PS+ subscribers? At least I'd make use of it on two devices so it wouldn't be a total waste. On just one device though...It's kinda steep.

Of course I'd much rather them allow devs to make a ps4 version of xbmc or plex.
A plex client would be fantastic. I wonder though how the PS4's browser will be, I guess maybe it's possible you could stream videos/mp3s on that with HTML5/flash? Not exactly ideal, but I wonder if that could also play audio in the background...probably not. :/

Eh... I can see where they are coming from. This is an incredibly shitty buisness practice on Sonys part. And stuff like this doesn't happen on PC. So instead of giving Sony money after this, they'll stick with PC until the issue is resolved.

The MP3 support is not important just because MP3s, but for what mean when you think other things thar can be consumer friend or not with the PS4.

Odd that you'd have a problem with such declarations given your hyperbolic username. How about live kinda free, and get by? =)

This little nugget needs to stop being spouted. Perhaps the lack of media options was the last straw? Maybe the lack of a quality launch lineup combined with this pushed people to simply wait? It's not always about people pretending to have affiliations that they dont actually have just to troll others.

No. It only just recently outsold the 360 and that was the GTA bundle that did that.

Never really seen that. To many different sources saying different things and then we have the difference of shipping and sold.

According to ******** they already overtook the 360 in May and then according to another info broker it happened, as you said it, with the GTAV bundle.

EDIT: ohh I used the name of a non trusted site? is there a FAQ where these are listed so I don't do it again?

The DLNA issue is my biggest. I generally don't listen to music while I game, but my PS3 is a media powerhouse. PS3 Media Server makes my life amazingly sweeter, so hopefully they add that back in later.

Having said that, it's not worth cancelling my pre-order over! I've been far too anxious for this console for far too long to let MP3s keep me from getting my grubby mitts on it. :P

I don't care people are complaining about the lack or mp3/dlna support. lol That is their right to do. I encourage it. I'm just surprised by some of the reactions is all. :)

Im not trolling anyone. I was just asking a genuine question is all.

Ok, lets have these options on our last gen console, but not our shiny brand new one.. wtf.

Many forgot to notice is that, since Music Unlimited is the only mean to listen to music on PS4, you can't listen to any music it your internet goes off. So much no always online eh, Sony.

This is now looking like a very smart move.

Besides, there are a bunch of good looking PS3 titles still coming next year. A great group of RPGs throughout the first three months.

I think I can pull back and wait for hardware redesign/price drop/more games.

As most of my stuff was being transcoded anyway. DLNA support could by bypass pesky things like mp3 support by using a format PS4 could support. In theory anyway.

I honestly did not expect them to not support DLNA. Glad I found out while I still have time to cancel and free up the console for someone else.

They've got you hook line and sinker.
Why play your own mp3 collection when you can pay for a service to stream some of what you might like?

I'm a little surprised the thing will still play the Blurays I already bought. Thank God for small favors.

uhm..have they stated that it's streaming only? because SMU does have Offline mode, just as Spotify you can download your music locally and chose to play it in offline mode, only connecting during certain intervals(can't say which since I don't remember) to verify that you are indeed a paying customer.
Every 24 hours maybe?

Wait. Music Unlimited offers game and anime music? Please tell me more.
Video game music, yes. It even has 'radios' for Video Game Music and, right now, GTA music! I have no idea where it stands on Anime music, might be a Japan-only thing for now. It does of course have plenty of weird knock-off albums, such as 'Gundam Compilation vol. 2' which includes such tracks as 'The Empire Strikes Back', 'Pokemon 2', and 'Mega Babies'.

You can download tracks/albums/playlists and play them offline on the Vita. Not sure about Android/iOS since I don't use the apps, and you can't on the website because it's just a web app. But I would have to imagine it would be the same as the Vita.

I was just shocked and surprised as everyone else about not having the mp3/dlna support. I tweeted yosp and adam about the lack of support for that stuff as well. I'm just surprised by some of the reactions.

Slightly OT but I think it would be pretty instructive for Microsoft to see how Shu came in and nipped that particular problem in the bud. He committed nothing but was able to calm the situation with a few well chosen tweets. Having real people like Adam Boyes and Shuhei Yoshida on twitter has been Sony's biggest PR advantage over Microsoft. Sony's entire rollout has been fronted by people outside of PR with real power at Sony who are automatically trusted more as a result. I can't remember seeing may Sony PR people in the time since 2/20. In contrast Microsoft's primary faces have been professional PR shills like Larry Hyrb and Yusuf Mehdi. Nobody trusts them and PR problems with the Xbox One tend to snowball as a result.

Are you serious or are you joking? I hope you're joking. Any device you buy includes the license for these things in the pricing. Sony wants people to subscribe to their service. They want more of your money. This is anti-consumer. There are benefits to their service for consumers, but in the end this move is still anti-consumer.

And there it is... exactly what sony wanted and it's WORKING. here's why they did it.

Considering NONE of the major services offer streaming anime or video game music in the US, if MU does offer it of course someone who liked that music (me) would be intrigued.

You have no choice but to be intrigued since you can't just stream what you want.

Shu's only not getting torn apart because people generally like him and don't think he's a mindless shill. If, for example, Penello were to put out such a statement the reaction would be the exact opposite.

...Nah I've gone longer without connecting to it. Was away on a mini vacation and put the phone in plane mode during a 3 day weekend, Prague has good beer people, and never once did it ask me to connect.

I have mp3s on my xbox and ps3.

Mostly used them on xbox so i could custom soundtrack multiplayer games once in a while.

Had them on ps3 because i kept it on most of the time in a given day, so i would just play music through my tv using that.

This affects me, but not as much as other, although it would be great to have the best of both worlds.
