PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

To anyone doubting Sony's intentions here read the FAQ. In some sections they say this will come in a future update. In others like DLNA and mp3 the answers are emphatic no's.

Yoshida's tweet is a non-answer to placate some of the blowback to this news.

Have to laugh at the irony in this.

Consumer - We want a gaming machine, not that other media box thing.

Sony - Ok, here you go.

Consumer - What the fuck Sony, why is it not a media center?

Sony - *scratches head*

wanting a gaming machine does not exclude wanting the ability to have custom soundtracks and mp3. One, it can impact your game experience. And two, it's something that is usually just expected out of our modern systems. It's ridiculous this is even a question.

It's definitely a weird oversight. I'm not sure what it accomplishes. The only reason I can think of is that they're concerned about the game recording/streaming features bringing copyright issues into play. If it is indeed true the Xbox One doesn't support this either then that would pretty much confirm this theory. A possible workaround would be to allow DLNA and music playback in the OS but then disable it in a game. Its not a big deal for me but I'm sure it gets some people upset they can't use a custom soundtrack.

Nope can't be that, because you can play MU which will still bring those issues into play. What it accomplishes is if you're really hardcore about your music while gaming is you'll subscribe to their shitty service.

Whoever decided this needs to be taken out back. Simply allowing DLNA would render most of Xbone's trumpeting of features moot. How they went backwards with this I haven't the faintest idea.

Yeah, except, that's completely distorting what happened.

People never claimed they didn't want basic media functionality - you know, the option to play your own media files. It's just that no one mentioned it because it should be standard by now.

Again ... Adding features that will affect my gaming experience is different than taking away features that existed on previous consoles simply to push a paid service. I'm still getting my PS4, but this is fucked.

That's what's puzzling, it's also likely the only part of their fan base that cares at all.

Yeah I stated my confusion earlier too.

I've been ripping my stuff since the OG Xbox, this is a pretty big deal, as I think EVERY Xbox 360 game has custom Soundtracks, it's also nice when you just grab the box and have your jukebox and video collection with you automatically, the lack of a video extender/server is less important to me, but would still be a nice addition.

Just chiming in to say this is bullshit. Like others, I've heavily used custom soundtracks since the og Xbox so this blows. I was already annoyed about a Sony device not playing cds, and this is even worse.

Even if you don't make use of this feature, these consoles should not be regressing in terms of functionality.

Consumer: We love media capabilities that don't sacrifice the console's primary goal of providing the best HD gaming for the price.

We got it, PS3/Wii/XBOX 360 are not gaming machines. We played on eloborated MP3 players.

Oh I totally agree, I just find it amusing given the general outcry at the competitions media focus over games. Now here we are, with a basic media function missing on the gaming oriented machine, and people are pissed.

It strikes me as odd, a strange omission, rather than something that impacts me personally.

I think the difference is that Sony controls the MU app and it's possible they can ensure its audio stream is blocked from the game recorder because the audio is sourced from a separate app. I'm not certain that would be possible if the music was sourced by the game from a custom playlist. In that case the game itself would be your music player and the OS would have very little way to differentiate between game sounds and the custom playlist.

Don't use custom soundtracks so don't care. But I can see this being an issue to some. I'm guessing it will arrive eventually.

DLNA was nice on PS3 but I never use it anymore. I really only use streaming. I don't really maintain a "private" collection of media anymore.

Why don't you send a tweet to Julie Larson-Green and see if you get a response? Or for that matter the head of just about any division of a major corporation...The fact that he is accessible should be applauded even if the response isn't what people want to hear.

Think this is one of the reasons why I've come back to caring about consoles.

The availability of these guys, the fact that if you see Shahid you can actually talk to him or just shake his hand, when he isn't rushing in between meetings that is. That they seem to living and breathing this contagious enthusiasm. It makes it hard not to actually genuinely care for the guys.

I would seriously not mind to see a Gabe-Fest, Shu-Fest, Shahid-Party where we all send tacky giant cards thanking them for being generally awesome to the gaming world(I know Gabe already gets it).

That little skit there would work if not for the fact that Music Unlimited's pay service is part of the PS4.

The marketing campaign really worked on you, huh?

You might argue that I shouldn't be pissed about this, because I already have so many other options to play MP3s in my living room - even from the TV, but I think THAT IS WHY I'm so pissed! Every device that even remotely has anything to do with media these days offers MP3 playback... if somebody openly charges you extra for it (it's not exactly what sony does here, but it's close), it makes you feel LIKE HAVING TO PAY PROTECTION MONEY to some MOBSTER!

Also: The earth-from-space music visualization from the PS3 made me go "god, Sony really cares, they love me and want me to love my PS3 ...and I DO! (why would I want an Xbox360?)".

Oh yeah, I remember all the topics and threads about people not wanting basic multimedia support.
Cool, so all I need to do is buy an Xbox One and update my PC to Win 8.
What's shown looks like an addition to DLNA. And of course you need an Xbox One to use this feature on an Xbox One. I seriously hope that you're joking.

I still can't process what led to this decision. My dad bought a PS3 to watch blu rays and to stream files for fucks sake. Could this be another branch of Sony pushing weight around or could it be that in order for Sony to get some subscription service like netflix, they had to get rid of the feature. I am ignorant of the technology of it but I am thinking that this does not take a lot of man hours to put into a console.

At least Shu didn't pretend he doesn't know anything about it. There's absolutely no way Hryb doesn't know everything about the Xbone's basic media functionality.

Going from Major Nelson's track record we are going to be waiting a while.

Still waiting on that UI walkthrough with Albert that was supposed to be coming in a few weeks. Still waiting on the blog post comparing the difference between Xbox One and PS4 hardware. This was all back on 9/8

Major Nelson said:
1) In a few weeks. I want to do a proper walk through w/ Albert.

2) I was thinking the same thing - I need to work on something like that. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, of course I'm joking. However, I do not see this as an addition to DLNA, more like a replacement. One that requires you to update your PC to Win 8 to use.

This is a bit ridiculous. Not that I use my gaming devices for mp3 playback but it's hardly an effort on Sony's part to implement.

Or maybe people are angry because playing MP3s is a BASIC feature a modern device should have, and because magically they somehow have their music subscription service there waiting for you. So if you want to play online, you have to pay now. If you want to listen to music in games, you have to pay now. It's pathetic. I usually only buy Sony consoles, but I'm not going to delude myself and act like this is cool.

It seems less like a matter of effort and more about pushing a subscription service.

lol sorry had to
You really didn't.

Sony is building quite a list of stuff that won't be ready at launch, won't be there at all or require an update day one.

Lucky I have internet in 2013 huh?

My fucking Sony ereader from like 4 years ago can play an MP3 and the system with netflix and all that other crap can't. If I had a PS4 preordered, I think this would get me to cancel it.

Take away a free feature to replace with a more limited paid alternative.
Classic walled garden approach.

And I was worrying about playing mkvs. This is such a crazy back step.

Did they not have the data of how there consoles were being used ???

Props to Yoshida for responding so quick.Hopefully both the gaming media and gamers will keep bugging them until they change this.
