PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Next up ... 'PS4 doesn't play vinyl ... oh my noes'

Oh so it has Spotify, Google Music, iTunes, Amazon, Pandora cloud streaming service support for background music at launch?

MP3 is the catch-all that is supported by even the future way to experience music (those streaming services). Vinyl is not. Try again.

And? It's not like this is just something they forgot to code.

Moving the functionality to music unlimited requires time and effort, and is a calculated desicion. It's not the dev team that will have any say in it.

But it's not inconceivable that enough of a backlash (or impacted preorders) could cause the suits a rethink. Trying to force adoption of something new by removing something people are used to rarely works. Ask Microsoft.

It can easily be added in future firmware updates. Just like they did on PS3. PS3 didn't have DLNA support until firmware 1.80.

you're putting words into their mouths now.

Just because Music Unlimited is there and MP3 playback isn't, doesn't mean anyone intentionally gimped anything. It could simply be that Sony prioritised their service over MP3. Which would still be a bit shitty but doesn't mean some grand conspiracy to prevent people playing their own music.

Bollocks.

Nearly every Sony device this side of 2007 has been able to play MP3s. Even their fucking E-ink Ebook readers could.

Suddenly they have a online music streaming service that nobody gave a shit about on their PSP, PS3, Vita, their Mobile phones and Tablets, being thrust front and centre to being the premier media service on their brand new 2013 console. At the same time MP3 support, the same support that they have put on EVERYTHING with circuits in time for launch, suddenly "isn't a priority" ?

No. They are taking the piss. They want us to buy into their service instead and they made sure we didn't have a alternative to ignoring it again. It bloody well was a conspiracy.

Lol Shuei has blocked me from following because I said I saw this as a money grab. Yeah definitely for the fans by the fans right shuei?

I can see where you're coming from - at least from the music unlimited happens to work perspective, certainly feels kind of cheap and lame. Depends how you word it though.
I got blocked by Anthony Giagos (sp?) on twitter recently, I really liked the guy but he said something astronomically fucking stupid and I called him out on it, he just cracked it. Shit happens I guess.

Keep in mind the PS3 launched with virtually zero features besides being able to play games. I thought GAF knew better? History, boys. History.

Wait and it will eventually get fixed. Sony has too much invested to let their competitor own a differentiator that they could patch into the firmware. The amount of 40+ page threads in the last week on "PS4 can or can't do x" and "Xbone can or can't do y" is getting laughable.

On one hand, I think Music Unlimited is a great service. It's great that we'll be able to stream music from Music Unlimited while playing a game on PS4.

On the other hand, the total lack of MP3 support sucks. It's bad enough that you can't play music CDs on PS4, but you can't even bring over your ripped MP3s? What a shame.

I haven't read the entire 40-plus page thread, but is it possible that the question regarding the lack of MP3 playback is literally limited to the MP3 format, and that perhaps other digital music files (such as AAC) will be playable? Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but I figured I'd toss out that idea anyway.

Are we sure this is really the case? Isn't it just like PS3 where you can't use an external drive as main storage (game data/saves/etc) but can still use it for something else

Already confirmed to support external drives, only not at launch.

I believe all we know right now is that you can use an external USB device to install new firmware. You have to go through a safe mode type startup to do it though. I don't think we know if you an read USB devices while in the main UI for saves etc. Considering you can't copy video files off of the PS4 yet i'm going to assume that external devices are not supported in any way right now. I hope i'm wrong for the people who like you take their saves around without having to rely on the cloud.

Have to laugh at Sony stumbling at the finish line. Weak launch line up, games delayed, much vaunted GDDR5 making little difference, day one patch needed (you don't have to be online!), no MP3 playing ability in a multimedia device. Seems like it's been months since I heard any good news about their system.

Some valid criticisms in here. (along with trolls but eh)

First of all, it is VERY disappointing that basic features are missing but I will give Sony the benefit of doubt that it was due to rush launch/release.

What is questionable is that Shu said he will mention these criticisms to the PS4 dev for future "consideration" as in these basic features were never gonna be on PS4 to begin with.....WHAT.THE.FUCK!

Huh? How does that make sense. They will consider making MP3 playback, add streaming, BG soundtrack. wah?

Why cant Sony/Shu just man up and say that those basic features will be added on a later FW due to time constraints along with all the other major features? Why is this something that we have to speculate about? What year is this? Some very questionable choices by Sony I must say. Yes PS4 is a gaming console and I know its crunch time and soon to release but dont tell us that they may just consider adding those basic things. Like thats a slap to your face. lol

I trust they will add these features at a later point but dont get why they are not being up front about it besides saying they will think about it.

Edit: And I do believe they are pimping their way over priced shit service MU (that can be played on the background no less) which is another slap on your face shit.

This is really disappointing for me. We use the PS3 for everything. Its a part of our stereo system. I guess theres nothing stopping me from continuing to do that but I saw the PS4 as a complete replacement.

cd/music player
- we rip our holiday music cd's to the ps3 and its a jukebox over the holidays
- i play my 2 year olds music from it that he dances to

i dont care ultimately if it cant play cd's but that leads me to the DLNA missing. I cant even replace the above. Today on PS3 we do the following to see them on our big TV.

- stream music
- stream home videos
- stream movies
- look at family pictures

I'm not going to go so far as say I'm cancelling but these are big omissions for me. I sincerely hope they patch this stuff in. It seems like really basic stuff to have for electronics nowadays.

They also said "the first time you take PS4 out of the box". Could just mean it's only the current firmware that doesn't allow for firmware updates through USB.

I can only go on what I've seen of the BF4 comparison. Higher resolution and better frame rate but they look practically the same in screens and videos.

I just found out you can't change your ID on PS4 either, something the bloody XBox 360 from 2005 allowed and something people have been asking about for months and months.

The BF4 comparison shows superior performance on every level, resolution, effects, and framerate. So the bullshit about GDDR5 and the day one patch shows that you're riding the negativity train just to troll. The lack of MP3 is ridiculous on Sony's part but it seems certain people here have some pent up feelings and they finally found an excuse to express them today. Another example, this person is accusing others of console wars:

It's ok, go to sleep. The console war will be over soon. If we're lucky we can make it out without suffering PTSD.
What?! Really? Hooooly smokes. That Sony arrogance coming back into full swing before the generation even starts. At this rate the Wii U will be giving them a run for their money by Christmas.
Finally the Sony astroturfers are having to earn their keep. They've had it easy for too long!

When I wake up will you be able to give the names of some of Sony's hired reputation managers who are active on GAF so I can put them on Ignore or report them to the mods?

Since you're so sure they are real I don't understand why it's such a problem for you to do that. And for the record, I appreciate your concern over my well being but I haven't had any alcohol and it's only 8:45pm.

Because that would tank the strategy to put their MU service front and center. Why subscribe to it if some of these features will be patched in free of change down the line?

"to expand storage on PS4?"

expand implies adding to already existing system space.

You can't expand the PS3 storage with external drives either, but it still supports them.

Is there confirmation anywhere?

The idea that you require to go into safe mode to read the USB flash drive to install an update implies that there are restrictions for this.

The question in the FAQ is pretty exclusive to "expand" storage, but that can be taken to mean various things.

The lack of DLNA support is especially amusing, considering that the standard was essentially created by Sony.

Hopefully this is an oversight that will be addressed. It won't stop me from getting one though.

For your sake I really hope you're not that naive.

What a load of shit. There's a difference between being critical and being an ass. He does respond to critisicm, if the answer is negative, he still responds anyway, and he responded regarding this very issue.

Not really. There is a difference between complaining/begging and being critical.

Cool, Yosp noticed.

Lets keep making noise until he tweets "FINE WE'LL FUCKING FIX IT."

IMO this whole mess has the signs of an internal decision that was pushed through by someone other then the core PlayStation team.

Hopefully the saner and more consumer friendly voices will get this sorted.

They also said "the first time you take PS4 out of the box". Could just mean it's only the current firmware that doesn't allow for firmware updates through USB.

I stand corrected. The way they word it makes it sound like at least updating will be supported through USB after 1.5 through the normal UI.

Launch lineup being weak is subjective. Killzone looks like the highest quality and feature packed exclusive game for next-gen.

What Sony games were delayed?

Little difference with the higher specs? Every game shown so far on both has a large advantage with PS4. Things will only improve from here.

You don't need to be online. You can download the update from a computer, or get the update from some games. Even without the update, you can play your disc-based games offline. Wii U had a day one update, XB1 will have a day one update, and it's not surprising that PS4 does.

No MP3 support at launch. Yes, that is genuinely disappointing, but about the least important feature it has in the game console, so it's the lesser of evils.

You're really reaching on most of these "negatives". Not to mention, usually it is closer to launch when you tend to hear more of the "fine print" disappointing stuff. It's just that Xbox One has been having that problem since it was announced. Wouldn't be surprised if we hear even more before launch. We know from this massive FAQ about all the problems with the PS4. There's still a lot of small details or caveats we don't know about XB1 yet.

Who the hell uses music unlimited? I was pissed off because I noticed a 15 dollar debit on my card... somehow I had accidently signed up, it had been going on for 7 months! Fuck that shit.

Also lack DLNA is a pain but the whole entertainment is rueing the day they agreed to it. It's a great thing and I've used my PS3 as a DLNA renderer for while, but there are better and more power efficient ways of doing it.

The first time. Besides a firmware update is not exactly your typical USB drive usage. I dunno, it just seems like a really simple thing to not be there.

I tweeted Yoshida about it, hopefully he replies.

Not really. There is a difference between complaining/begging and being critical.

I don't even know what that means.

E3: "Well, there was no killer app, but it's only $400 and XB1 has shitty DRM. May as well preorder now; I can always cancel later. Maybe there will be something cool at TGS."

TGS: "Gee, no new Japanese stuff for launch. But Resogun looks pretty cool, and I guess I could get Watch Dogs on PS4 instead of PC, and even though I'm not really into driving sims it would probably be fun to fuck around in Driveclub PS+ for a few hours. Should be a solid enough launch."

Watch Dogs and Driveclub are delayed: "Well, maybe Knack will be alright? Anyway I use my PS3 for streaming video and music a lot, and that stuff should be more convenient on PS4 because of standby mode. Plus it will probably have a cool new visualizer. I guess that's enough of an excuse not to sell my preorder on ebay."

Today: "..."

LMAO. That's how I feel

I don't even know what that means.

Did you ever have to go into safe mode on the PS3?

I can understand the disappointment.

I can't understand the outrage.

Come on people. It's a box with electronic stuff inside. It's going to be alright.

What is really scary about this is this is a classic Sony move. Forcing something the consumer does not want, did not ask for, and detrimental to their user experience, on the user.

My guess Sony Music and upper SCE execs, basically forced this on PlayStation. I would be willing to bet before this decision was made, PS was not even thinking of not including MP3 support. Somebody came over and basically said, "You are doing this."

I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before, I just don't want to read 47 pages.

Can I still hook up my external HDD and play mp4 videos that are on it? That's all that really matters to me. It will be a MASSIVE blow if that feature's gone.

Nobody knows it was not pay of the faq.

Outrage is understandable because seems like they made a choice not to give you the option to do some of these things and opted to offer your their shit service that cost $120 a year to listen to music.

There is a difference between "its missing due to time constraints/coming some time later" to "we'll consider those options".

Then they better not fix this mp3 nonsense, but just add it to the removed 1.5 web update. Keep calm... etc

Cool, Yosp noticed.

Why do you think Sony gave us one earbud on the headset. So the other ear could be used with your music device to listen while you game.

Did you ever have to go into safe mode on the PS3?

No. Which doesn't really mean anything regarding the PS4. Could have been something that wasn't done in time at launch, could be intentional to get people to update, anything.

But they do specify "the first time".
