PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Then he probably should have just answered.

Kagari's source is probably right on considering Sony's past history with DLNA.

Source mentioned DLNA coming post launch.

To further be obvious, the PS4 will have many improvements and additions to features after launch as well.

The important part are the games and having a function OS and network. Of course there will be apps and stuff but this stuff takes precedence over some other things.

yeah, I wasn't really worried about all this. Not surprised that its something that will come post launch.

Don't want this to come across as condescending, but is playing your own soundtrack through your console while playing a game really such a big deal? I only ask because 1. I'm a sucker for Video game OSTs, so I couldn't even begin to think of doing that and 2. What's stopping anyone from just playing music through their phone, mp3 player, laptop, or any other device? Convenience? Well I guess the joke's on me.

This just seems like such a trivial matter I'm honestly surprised at such a negative response.
Night time. Quiet apartment. 5.1 Headset. Gran Turismo 5. Time trials on the Nurburgring as the sun sets. Massive Attack.

Flawless victory.

Better than therapy too.

Got a mix for crackdown that has action movie scores - Bourne Ultimatum, Hans Zimmer stuff, chase music. Its like a different world. Music hits you right in the moods and the feels, and when you get the right mix with the right game the whole thing is a crescendo.

Its not for everything though. I wouldn't do it in something like TLOU, or story based games. But ones that are pure gameplay and pure mechanics? Definitely. Its cranks games up to 11.

Playing split screen Gears of War online with my friend to romantic 80's music is one of my highlights of the gen.

I'm not even joking.

It's not the same playing it through another device. I would need to put down the controller in order to do that and then you have two separate sound sources conflicting with each other. It's much better if it's coming from the same source.

No DLNA, no CD playback, and wtf, no mp3 playback. Everything with an audio capability plays mp3. My Kindle plays mp3 for fuck's sake. It's truly insulting when it's clearly an executive decision to hawk some music subscription service.

I use all of these all the time on my ps3. It shocks me they won't be on its successor. Surely they'll be in some future update? Surely?

I'm so happy I decided to wait at least 6 months to a year before going next-gen. They'd better have this crap sorted out.

Whats a casual audiophile
Sounds oxymoronic

Yeah, reading my own words again, that sounds true. I was trying to say I'm an audiophile but without going in the deep end. I'm more of an entry-mid level enthusiast as I feel that gains are minor beyond that point.

I mean look at the Xbox One. The Snap mode is an added, completely optional feature that's getting blasted by the masses.

xbox snap is interesting but is probably contributing to 720p xbone games because it's playing two full-fledged applications, unlike a mp3 playing in the background

You know, I have to sit back at laugh at all this in some ways. This past year, ive rode pretty hard for Sony, almost to the point of fanboyism

but underneath it all this is my philosophy.

This never more true than it is today. Up until this morning, there was no question that I wasn't going to buy a PS4. Full price on launch day without a quibble. Now Sony can take it and shove it where the sun dont shine.

Arseholes.
I get what you're trying to say but, was it really necessary for you to quote yourself?

Valid point. I guess there are far more people that enjoy custom music than not, given the response. I remember using it when both current gen consoles launched just for trying its sake, and just didnt find much use out of it overall.

PS4 has external HDD support last I heard. You can definitely switch out the main HDD unlike on XBO.

Non-issue for me as far as i'm concerned. When I play games I want to be fully immersed in the game , inserting music from something else just ruins it for me and in a way i think it disrespects the developers that worked hard to make the music for these games.

Ah ok. Definitely haven't considered that to be the 720p culprit, although that does make a whole lot of sense.

Seems to me like a choice of spending time getting an OS that's not buggy and crashing, and putting off non-essential functionality for future iterations.

Remembering the slow Wii U OS, and now the rumoured Xbone OS issues then seems like a sensible call to work on the more critical stuff and leave the features used by, let's face it, 2% of users to later on.

Yea but there are times especially on multiplayer that music is a good idea. No excuse for such a rudimentary feature.

It doesn't support external HDD. You need to fully replace it which isn't exactly convenient. I believe the Xbox One will be patched to support this and the Wii U currently has this feature.

What about those country without Music unlimited service?
It's not that important feature for me, but still a bit disappointed,
I hope they can add those feature on later firmware.

Who actually listens to mp3s while playing games? .01% of the population? If it keeps the PS4 price down i support this.

You can't hate the guy lol.

dear sony.
i've loved you since the ps1.

its a bullshit excuse to re-monetize things i already own.
please don't screw me like this...

1. The PS4 apparently doesn't play mp3s period . Its not just about custom sound tracks
2. What do you think the cost is for adding MP3 playback? The omission has nothing to do with costs, and everything to do with Sony deliberately removing functionality so that they can sell their own service.

When you google DLNA the first link is Polygon reporting that it's missing on PS4

The first is the complete removal of DLNA. For those that don't know what that is, DLNA enabled the PS3 for example to wirelessly communicate and share data with other DLNA enabled devices. That meant sharing pictures from your DLNA enabled phone would be quick and seamless. Such won't be the case with the PS4, since it is no longer DLNA certified.

The second announcement was the gamers won't be able to listen to their own MP3s, since the system won't be able to read them. While this doesn't seem like a big deal to me, neoGAF users are quite upset about this news. In reality, it makes sense that Sony would remove the feature, given that they want to focus on their new Music Unlimited service which requires a subscription to use. The FAQ did state that users will be able to listen to songs using Music Unlimited while playing games.

Is the DLNA and MP3 removal announcement as heartbreaking for you as it is for others?

lol 'heartbreaking'

Yeah but in a multiplayer shooter don't you want to be able to not have music playing over the match so you can hear nearby footsteps and gunfire?

Yea but there's times you won't be playing seriously and just for fun. It still applies for SP too. You beat a game and want to replay it for fun,etc

Judging by this thread, far more than '0.1%'. But by all means make silly assumptions to back up your excuses for Sony if it makes you feel better.

If enough people want it, THEY BETTER FUCKING FIX IT.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. One of the top requested features over the past 6 years if not THE top feature was to be able to change PSN ID's or have a "screen name" that people could go by. You know for people using their real names who have a legal name change or even for people getting hassled by punks online. But Sony still hasn't joined the 21st Century. While people in Japan can do that and every other website/system out there lets you do this, the PS4 still will not. Nope...you're stuck with your original PSN ID. BUT...you CAN have it be your FULL Name and link it to Facebook! Yippie!

2. What do you think the cost is for adding MP3 playback?

75 cents per unit, an additional 50 cents for ripping. Approximately $75 million or $125 million over the life of the product.

It's still a pretty lame move compared to the DVD/BD activation that saves over $10 a unit, but it's not even the worst costcutting move in consoles in the past 10 years.

i'd never listen to my own music in this single edge case scenario, therefore i'm totally fine with my $400 multimedia device omitting the single most prevalent media format on the planet.

if this is a considered decision and not some fuck up, you can bet your boots that it will apply to certain popular video formats too.

LOL.

Btw it seems clear that this global launch FAQ is just the full details about firmware 1.5.
Based on what I've read on the blog, unfortunately the system at launch will be a bit more barebone than I would have hoped, just like happened with Vita.
But there's a long road of firmware updates ahead :D Having people like yosp who are in a high position within the company and listen to our voices on social networks is good thing so people have to make noise on what they want.

you could've said the same regarding kagari's source for not charging for online multiplayer.

I found out about that through another source even though Thuway mentioned it and thread was locked way back. I remember that day.

That being said, I've said enough and don't need to regurgitate my points.

Wow, talk about over-reaction.

Guys, pick your battles. If you keep complaining/campaigning about every small detail, your voice will be less valuable.
