Your WoW character brought to life (kinda)

Their "3D color printing" claim sounded a bit far-fetched to me, so I read up on this bit in the FAQ:

We use technology previously reserved for the manufacturing industry, called rapid prototyping machines, to convert three dimensional computer models into physical objects.

Seems like that probably refers to stereolithography, where a resin that sets under UV light is used to build up a shape. Examples of these shapes online don't seem equal to the figurines posted above, but the WoW models are all in the painting anyway.

Could be worth risking the $100 for the comedy value of a gnome model. :D

I think I'm gonna log onto WoW and put my old rogue back into Bloodfang armor for one of these things. Would be nice as a memento of good times back in the day. :)

If you're not signed up for WoW anymore would you still be able to get one of your character? I loved how my Shaman looked before I finally got bored of the end raiding and quit.

Wow i do want this, looks great. Get one of my fat dwarf rogue and my Draenei priest. 2.3 patch , now this , must not re-enter the world that is warcraft, arghhh.

Well I signed up. So now I have to wait for a drawing to see if I can even buy one. Even then it takes 2 months to make/send.

I don't think I can resist this. Visits, you shall return in all your level 70 NE druid badassery! Ideally, he should be in his classic "fuck you priest, I'm Innerving myself you whiny prick" raid combat stance.

(side note: after leaving WoW for like 6 months I'm back on the horse. Far be it for me to encourage other former junkies to shoot up again, but daaaaaaammmnnn is the new leveling curve in Azeroth nice!)

Kind of cool, but the actual models look pretty ugly for $100. They retain the blockiness of the in-game models, which isn't the fault of the manufacturer, but also the paint jobs look a bit off.

This is a fantastic idea. I just wish it was in Guild Wars as well. :S

Can't expect something really great since it's a 3d printer, and they tend to make pretty rough figures. Though no way else you'd be able to supply such a large variety of characters.

I think it is really cool. I put a ton of time in back in the day. I have been semi retired since about 2 months after TBC launched. I would love to have a figure of my hunter when he completed his T2 set...back when BWL was the "end" of the game. I have tons of memories and good times attached to that character.

They came up with a really awesome idea.

Seems expensive but the technology they use must also be not so cheap.

Not really; materials roughly cost em 10-20 bucks; the machine paints the model as it builds it (builds in thin layers of colored plastic with a wax cover); these Rapid Prototype versions are actually called STL or Stereolithograph models.

Yes they can be expensive say 2 yrs ago... but now you can have a rapid prototype machine in your own home for a lil under 5K.
the printing result is pretty much the same quality you see above...that all said..pretty friggin cool.

you'd be surprised how much fidelity can come through a 3d printer.
we just did our first model out of Z brush 1.5 mil polys; the unit came out stellar very clean very detailed toy quality dare I say.

I'm doing a 5'3 in 3d wolverine (logan) now ..when i'm done the Zbrush pass I'm getting it R-peed.

Its too bad they didnt get this up faster. They would have made some pretty awesome christmas gifts. Has a price been confirmed ( I saw $100, but is that final)?

This will be tempting after getting some cash for xmas. But i must say, i dont like my current char names. Unfortunatly i wasn't able to get "evlcookie", so i need to transfer my rogue or priest to another server and rename :lol . Might pass on this for a while. See how everyone else's turns out!

Blizzard should have bought this technology and streamlined the process to lower the price somehow. I look forward to the day when I can order a custom model for $30.00-$50.00 instead of settling for Blizzard's official figurines.

Hell this could lead to a revolution in action figure production. 100% custom built figurines!

Curious how many people they pick per drawing. Also not sure if I'm liking any of the poses, was hoping they'd offer more emotes.

Seriously. Having custom figures would fucking rule. If they can extend this to other games like Monster Hunter and Guild Wars (or even single player RPGs with visible armor), I would totally be into it!

I remember seeing something, somewhere about building your own ("low res") 3D printer somewhere on the net recently.

Mii statue time!

This would be perfect for something like City of Heroes/Villains. I've never seen anyone that looked the same so each figure would truly be unique.

Oh, why does WoW get to have all the fun? :(

Ugh. WoW has bad character art. I'd rather have figures of Lineage II, Monster hunter,AION, or Guild Wars character.

Figures of TF2 characters would be brilliant.

Did you seriously just call Blizzard art bad?

This is a really cool idea. I wish I would have seen this back when I played WoW. I always said they should do something like this. Too little too late for me, I guess.

The colors are vibrant and the background design is nice but the character art is really bleh. WOW has really bad in game character art.

They only characters that look good are the ones in the CG intros and videos.

Makes me wanna play WoW again.
i miss my lvl 52 Troll warrior T___T.

Based on the information they give in the FAQ, it actually sounds more like the rapid prototyping machines that I've dealt with, which use plaster and ink cartridges not much different from those of a standard paper printer. The technology is usually just called "3D printing". These machines create 3D objects by basically printing "layers" of colored plaster or other material. A single model could be cut up into hundreds or even thousands of thin, horizontal layers of color information.

The big plus with these printers is that they're fast (a few hours to print a model about one foot cubed in size), cheap ('cause it's plaster), and print in color (which most other rapid prototyping technologies I know of do not). Thus, these models probably would not be painted, unless they're trying to get colors more vibrant than what the machines prints. Which is good, because painting rapid prototyped models is bitchy work.

The $100 pricetag is a lot of overhead, if the models are only 4 inches tall. Some of this overhead is needed with these plaster models though because, y'know, things break. :lol

The thing is these printers can print out pretty much any major 3D file type you want, not just WoW characters. I personally haven't printed anything cool on them in a while, but I have seen cartoon characters and Star Trek vessels printed on them before. Some slow day at work I plan on printing out a 3D model I have from Zelda:TP. :D

Well after 1 1/2 years of being in the monthly drawings, I finally won one of them... just for ability to purchase one.

So, I resubscribed to my WoW account, dressed up my character in her old gear. And made my order which totaled 150 dollars. I'll post pictures of the thing whenever it arrives. Based on how long it took me just to be able to order... it might be a few years.

I'm pretty sure that's 8 months, not 1 1/2 years. It is 2008, isn't it? Or have I lost track of time again?

I got my print ordered in February and it arrived broken. I e-mailed them and they were very cool about it, and started another (better padded). The quality is quite good, although the material is a bit grainy. The colors look nice, and they don't skip on any details.
As for my old, broken figure, I'm not quite sure what to do with him. I thought about buying the gnome action figure, paint the Ashbringer a bit more to my liking and do some simple converting to put it in his hand. Then I'll have two custom draenei paladin figures for the price of one. Sheer madness.

Show it off! pics?

So i'm interested and very scared of this.

On the one hand, its a very cool geeky piece of memorabilia and I'm all about that.

On the other hand, I don't have very attractive looking gear, and even if I did have t6-s4 items and my guy looked super crazy, in the coming months there is of course going to be something way better. I'd be scared of what I COULD have got.

I grew tired of waiting for Figureprints to randomly pick me from a million other WoW fans, and took matters into my own hands. This is a custom, hand-made figure based on MOTU Teela, wearing my pre-raiding lvl 60 gear (which is the only good-looking set I've ever had).

Here's what it's suppose to look like.

I really wanted to do the kneel pose, but it wouldn't of shown off the character as much. It's suppose to capture my character in my raiding days pre BC. The only thing that isn't correct is the boots... since I really wore boots of the shadow flame. But those just use a regular stock graphic... so they looked horrible. Also my tier 2.5 helm and shoulders are taken off so you can see her face.

I don't have that problem since I stopped playing shortly after BC. This figure is basically a way for me to have something physical to represent the HUUUUGE amount of time I spent in that game.
