Can someone ask Yosp on twitter at what speed PS4 CPU will be clocked? There is no harm stating it is going to be 1.6 GHz at this point.
 
I think both companies have learned something in the past few years. I have a hard time believing that Sony would put all that hardware in such a small case, with the psu inside, no less, if they weren't confident in their product. It has a lower power consumption too, so I don't think it will overheat in normal conditions (as in not inside a glass cube with no ventilation whatsoever).

Could be wrong, but I can't say I'm worried about this. For any of the two consoles.
 
Just watched the video.

He's hearing from a couple of sources that the retail kits are prone to overheating and believes that everything we have seen so far is running on the debug units which look identical.

My question would be, shouldn't the debug units be overheating too? Those units that are on show for hours and hours and hours at shows?

He's making valid points about HDCP and nobody having access to retail boxes though. Don't buy the overheating though. It's not like hiding it now is going to save Sony any face as they'll get dragged over the coals once people realise at home. Even more so because of RROD.
I never say stuff like this because I hate adding to the anonymous negativity on the Internet but ... Marcus is a shithead and I don't trust him at all. He sounds like he's complaining because the press hasn't had access to retail units. While I agree that those should be out by now, I also think Marcus is the type to whine about it and spread FUD as part of his cranky shtick.
 
Albert had to know this was coming, right?

I mean, there's a few possibilities:

1) He didn't know it'd be 720p/1080p, even though devs have been saying that shit since E3. That means he was honestly out of the loop on what the hell is going on with 3rd parties and really not a useful source of information

2) He knew it was going to explode like this, and chose to make posts and statements like "We invented DirectX" and "Not more than 30%, no" to make him look insane later.

3) He thought somehow the discrepancy would be lessened by launch, or at least ignored. Which is more likely for his line of thought, but unlikely to actually work in 1080p as the rumors were bubbling for a while and he played dumb.

4) Or... ultimately, he's a PR account (Even though he said he isn't PR), as a Major Nelson Jr., and basically has to toe the company line, so he knew ultimately what he was being forced to say is an out-and-out lie.

So he was either out-of-the-loop, insane, foolish or a liar.

I'm still waiting for that list of Kinect voice commands that work in which countries...

1) If he truly did not know anything about the games performance .he should never have brought it up in the first place.

2 How was him pleading insanity going to help him prevent a shitstorm from erupting once the truth was out?

4 even if he knew he was lying through his teeth and knew full well what he was getting himself into he should have known that GAF . a forum full of industry people .developers technical people and PC gamers and hardcore gamers in general is one of the worst places he could have chosen to tout the company line in.

As a gamer who has been around for every console launch since the 2600, I can assure you, the old days sucked, and nobody had fun when they figured out that they fell for some slick marketing bullshit and bought the dud system of the generation, even if they had multiple consoles.

Having access to more real, factual information for consumers to make an informed purchase decision is ALWAYS better than the roll of the dice consumers had to do in the old days.

I once bought Ikari Warriors for NES out of a catalog because the cover looked cool. Dark days man, dark days.

You have the audacity to plead for an apology because we were not buying into your lies that the Xbox One isn't that far off in power from the PS4, Now you want to vindicate yourself by comparing games at two different resolutions? That is some serious mental gymnastics you're playing there.

You should be ashamed there is still a "single-digit fps difference between the two platforms" when one is pushing 125% more pixels and in some cases more effects and better IQ.

Microsoft just needs to admit the power difference and move on to focus on the positive aspects of their console design. You know, like how Nintendo dominated the industry with a less powerful console than all other competitors. Focusing on (read: lying about) your consoles power (or lack thereof) does nothing but shine more positive light on Sony's offerings.
 
What is "single-digit framerate difference" even trying to say? I mean, by my non-native speaker understanding of the term that is up to 9 frames per second, or almost a third of the fps in a 30 fps game. Is that NOT a huge difference in performance?

So... Tell us about the great first party and exclusive titles you have coming,that we cannot play if we buy an Xbox one. Tell us more about how we'll get app support on Xbox one - how many apps are you hoping to having during he first 12 months? Tell us when more than just the US and Japan should get decent TV support.

Give us reasons to buy. Chasing your tail on multi platform and technical parity is a dead end. Has been for a while really, and really you should have known that it would fly with this forum. So why not try a positive alternative?

Not to be over dramatic or anything but the internet has helped topple governments, brought the spotlight to other consumer unfriendly things, like pink slime, forcing them to close plants etc. so you can be sure it can help make the xbone a failure.

The word of mouth is going to kill them.

the difference was 8 years ago there were only interesting and relevant news topics being discussed in those monthly magazines now theres 150 page threads about the dirt grime under marcus fenix's fingernails.

I'm already sold on the exclusives. At this point the only road block I see is the price. It's just so hard to justify when the more powerful system is $100 cheaper. Hell, I have already accepted that it is not as powerful. Just let the price reflect that and I bet there will be far fewer complaints. As we all know that it will still have games that are both gorgeous, as well as fun. It is just not a deal at $500.

It is, but at a cost. Forza 5 isn't exactly a technical marvel/pushing many advanced effects.
 
I would rather keep Forza out of this. All earlier Forzas hit 720p and 60fps on 360. Feat achieved by not many titles.
Only exception you can make is Horizon which ran at 30fps but I guess it had much lessor aliasing.

I read that more as "when there isn't a lot going on on-screen the 32MB can be stretched more effectively." And I don't know how willing 3rd party devs will be to go to such extra lengths if they can just drop resolution to 720p in order to maintain parity.

If you can afford to wait, just wait it out. The games aren't going anywhere.

I'm sure these formats already being used where applicable.

It's trivial to use them for a target, you just change the format type when you allocate your buffer.

They would not necessarily be suitable for all buffers, however. Games today will render to many different buffers and precision will be more critical for some than others depending on the technique. Where they are used you may see a quality tradeoff in color precision.

Changing render target formats to save a bit of space on them would be one of the first things devs would do, and I'm sure already are doing. Improved eSRAM utilisation will require more sophisticated tricks.

Forza is using last gen techniques like forward rendering, it's not surprising to see it being 1080p.

Any compression uses computing resources and the XB1 doesn't exactly have spare resources to do this. Also any compression provides a loss in IQ. Compressing a Render Target is not a great Idea, it can be necessary at times but it really should be avoided if possible

Compressing render targets isn't going to make a difference, it is only one way of rendering at 1080p using the 32mb esram with the other being tiling and both have drawbacks, Tiling requires a relatively large amount of the DDR3 memory bandwidth.

Oh, I probably am. I plan to pick up a PS4 by Spring and the Xbone down the road. But I am still leaving the door open to maybe getting it earlier. Plans change on the fly sometimes.

I assume the main problem MS has with that surprisingly big power difference is, XBox core audience was built on the original console upon this power difference. Then x360 launched and again, the core audience had a reason to stick with the XBox as it was the most powerful console for a year, and then it kept having the best multiplatform ports.

At $500, early adopters should be the core audience, but MS has all reasons to be afraid to lose them, because of this power factor.

The problem for MS is that it appears at this stage, rather inconveniently for them, that PS4 is going to storm out the blocks sales wise.

Why would 3rd parties invest time with complex optimisations for XB1 multi-platform titles when it will have a smaller install base and it is easier and will always be easier to port code from PC to PS4 without the complex optimisations needed to get around a 32mb ESRAM limit.

The viability in devs spending time and effort jumping though hoops to get cross-platform titles to run as well on the XB1 are diminished in this scenario. Therefore the easiest and most cost effective thing to do is to drop the resolution.

And that is what rumours suggest 3rd parties are doing for further upcoming XB1 multiplat titles.

I remember when my dad wanted to buy me a Playstation. Told him to stuff it, I had a megadrive and I wanted a Sega Saturn, which he ended up buying.

It makes little sense considering debug kits are identical to retail units apart from the fact hat they can run unsigned code. So there's no reason why they should be fine while retails units would die left and right.

These guys have been throwing so much sand on their customers eyes. Everything to prevent those pre orders from being cancelled.

Sorry to hijack this topic, but it seems Marcus Beer (annoyed Gamer) is claiming via sources the PS4 is prone to overheating...and this is why no retail units are available for reviewers etc..

anybody else heard this?

There are already hundreds of them in the wild, running absolutely fine. Extremely rare cases of overheating. I say overheating, but when it does it just turns itself off temporarily so it never actually over heats to the extent where it gets damaged. Should be known that the only PS4 in the wild that has shut itself down over this was enclosed in a tiny plastic box with no ventilation what-so-ever.

Could just be a bug in the retail firmware if it is true. Just a problem with properly sensing the temperature and ramping up the fan.

But the press have had a really poor record with negative PlayStation rumors this year. They have consistently heard things that don't turn out to be true. Makes you wonder who the sources are, and what their agenda is...
