Adam Sessler's: On Xbox One and PS4's Resolutiongate, and Day One Patches

This is beyond reviews, calling out the differences between console versions was the bread and butter of DF for a reason.. The gaming press made sure to remind everyone of the technical failings of a particular console that suffered at multiplats despite its untouchable exclusives..shoe switches foot..And suddenly rationality has been bestowed upon all.. sure dude.

Both the PS3 and the 360 have been marked down at different times for being an inferior version. The 360 for usually for having worse hardware, the PS3 for usually being a pain in the ass to develop for.
There is no grand anti-Playstation conspiracy.

It's more than perplexing. Like I said earlier, the 360 had superior third party titles and that was touted as a major advantage. Now that the PS4 is running games at a higher resolution and better frame rate it suddenly doesn't matter? Come again?

Besides the minor differences with the performance this gen, PS3 had a fairly gimped OS from the start. I think that had as much to do with the 360 success this gen than any PS3 performance difference.

I'm sorry but his 'lol fanboys' tirade just makes him sound like a shill. Of course it's still about the games, nobody (sane) has ever forgotten that. Why would waiting for the end of 2014 suddenly mean it is OK to 'judge' a console or its games? Can't we reasonably discuss the merits of this performance gap without discrediting the whole thing?

What's even more amazing is that Adam Sessler's explains how hurtful that is(treating your audience and viewers as beneath them) in the same panel he did at SGC.

omg. It all makes sense now. Someone cloned adam and took out the real him.

Sorry if this insinuation offends anyone but it seems Revision3 is partnered with MS and has an ap for 360 gold members. So surprise surprise it probably is damage control.

That means nothing, its like saying Rev3 and IGN are in Youtube's pockets as well since they're on Youtube. IGN also said they would like to put an app on the Wii U as well, but were rebuffed around the Wii U's launch.

Why are people seeing bias in everything Sessler says? I'm just 5 minutes in, but everything he says in on point right now.

Because the entire premise of his bringing this up is to defend the weaker console. Instead of people just acting like adults and saying "yeah, that PS4 sure is powerful, and it's $100 cheaper", which is the truth, they go out of their way to basically say resolution in videogames no longer matters.

It's a race to see who can downplay technology the fastest, in an industry and hobby built on technology.

Resolution and frame rate was a huge selling point for 360 multiplatform titles and now it suddenly doesn't matter? Where's the Jennifer Lawrence okay gif when you need it?

I agree, because I started out as a Wii owner last gen, and there wasn't a 350/PS3 owner who didn't scream HD this and HD that, when Nintendo held the "its all about gameplay" position which I have always agreed with, now everyone acts like they were about this.

Why are people seeing bias in everything Sessler says? I'm just 5 minutes in, but everything he says in on point right now.

You like the bit where he can't even bring himself to say 720p when just a few months ago he insisted that 1080p was the bare minimum we should expect from the new consoles?

So, after I watched today's Sessler's Something, I thought the whole argument was odd, since I remember Adam Sessler's pretty much arguing that his expectation were always 1080p/60 for these two new consoles, and that they needed to something more.

So I looked up the video from his panel he did last June for this year's Screw Attack Gaming Convention, and well....

Certainly, Adam Sessler has always said that games needs to innovate and show us(the consumers and the press) what a next gen concept is, but he certainly expected both the XBox One, and PS4 to be 1080p/60.

So now that we have confirmation that one system is clearly having issues with it, what changed in Sessler's expectations?
Shiiiiiiet@ 1: 40 Detective GAF doin' work

Put a fork in this one. We're done here.

I'm not sure I can trust the words of a person, who was talking about quitting their work because they couldn't get a free console.

Shame...I used to deeply respect Sessler.
I think Sterling said they get a free one but they have to go to NY for the event and check it out there at the event before taking it home. It's an unexpected flight over three time zones and back.

Imagine you were told your pre-order was available but you had to fly across the country to pick it up. It's not a disaster, but it's a huge and unexpected pain in the ass.

I'm not defending it, but that's not to say I don't understand it.

But they did tell you that the PS4 version is superior. they did tell you that the PS4 is MORE POWERFUL. So is the issue then members of the press aren't screaming and proclaiming how amazingly more powerful the PS4 is than Xbone? That seems to be the issue. NO ONE has said Xbone is stronger than Ps4, quite the contrary. So what's the deal? Is it not "loud" enough perhaps?
No. They downplay the power difference as "minor" and tell us how most of us won't notice it because we're stupid. What they fail to realize is that most of us reading these articles are smarter than the average person. We can read a basic spec sheet. We can read the Digital Foundry tech analysis articles.

We the "core" gamers who keep up with the video game industry are the ones buying these consoles this year. Telling us over and over again how the average person won't care/notice doesn't matter. It won't make this go away. It will only piss us "core" gamers off even more and we'll keep whining and complaining about how these topics and in return bring more attention to them.

Why are people seeing bias in everything Sessler says? I'm just 5 minutes in, but everything he says in on point right now.
When someone says stuff of the "aesthetics are more important than resolution" sort in the midst of a console multiplat IQ war, it understandable appears as though they're siding with the weaker console for no actual reason.

Especially when the Xbox One's 720p is described as "upresed 1080p", rofl.

Eh. I'd rather just let Sessler's confusing argument speak for itself rather than try reach for a conspiracy in a tweet.
You know you seem like you have a great passion for the games industry from what I read in the last topic you weighed in on but I think it would be in your best intrest to stop going to bat for these guys.

I'd rather not have the speculation about money exchanging hands and keep the arguments to Sessler saying 4 months ago the consoles better be 1080p/60 and now he says they shouldn't be.

I agree with you but the money has already exchanged hands. I am not trying to speculate on pay offs just attempting to understand the motivation behind this video. And you are right Adam mentioning the opposite 4 months ago is much more juicy lol.

-edit I acquiesce completely to the rev3 ap not being a big deal, just started looking up who owned Rev3 and noticed some ties to other publications. Sorry bout that.

I can't wait to see the TV movie on all this in 3 years.

Who's gonna play Sessler?

I vote for Travolta!

Shoulda got that Oscar for Battlefield: Earth. If only it was in 1080p instead of 1080i.

He was always a condescending asshole, just more eloquent than others. :P

I remember watching his E3 coverage on G4 and he was alright at the time. Terrible sense of fashion, but he had reasonable opinions. It's a shame that he seems to have such a disdain for his audience like so many other games writers.

By this logic we should have thrown our N64s out the window because they didn't output at the same resolutions our 3Dfx cards could.

When new shit comes out, you expect it to justify its existence. But I guess "exclusives," that term loved so deeply by the console warriors out there, are apparently enough, because a brazen marketing construct like paying off EA for Titanfall is "all about the games".

At least when Nintendo throws an underpowered console out there, it differentiates itself for better or worse.

Except that would be the opposite of my logic. We didn't throw out our N64s, we didn't throw out our PS3s and 360s even though there were "better" hardware options out there. Because in the end, it really doesn't matter that much to people.

The PS3 was closer to $200 more than the 360 when it came out (going by comparable SKUs) and was NEVER (and STILL ISN'T) actually more powerful than the 360. Is everyone that bought a PS3 a total sucker? Nope.

Is that comment later on in the video? So far, all he's said is that Sony and Microsoft showed off impressive visuals but stagnant experiences.

edit: nevermind, I'm an idiot. I watched the second link.

They are, we've been intently discussing both consoles since the February PS4 reveal. We're all very open minded, its just a matter of preference. There's just more things we like about the Xbone over the PS4, and price wasn't really as big of an issue since this is something we are "investing" in for 6+ years. Obviously you feel otherwise, but we all have opinions.

You mean investing for the next 3-4 years, because ms doesn't support their consoles much past that.

Why are people seeing bias in everything Sessler says? I'm just 5 minutes in, but everything he says in on point right now.

A lot of people seem to be equating, "not condemning MS" with "being a shill" at the moment, especially with this point.

I've just had a thought

Sessler, if you were going to see a new release movie and the IMAX showing of a movie was less than the regular showing of the same movie would that matter?

Same movie, same charecters, same story but better image quality, better sound

Pretty sure you'd go for the IMAX showing at a cheaper price 100% of the time

Someone needs to tweet this to him. Stat.

"Whaaa! I have to take a trip to New York to play the lastest and greatest videogames, whilst getting paid to do so! Whaa!"

You know you seem like you have a great passion for the games industry from what I read in the last topic you weighed in on but I think it would be in your best intrest to stop going to bat for these guys.

I'm not going to bat for anyone. Read my other posts in this thread for evidence of that. I just think that reading into supposed coded Twitter messages is a little far for me.

I really think this guy is a tool. His opinions are whack. Resolution and framerate were selling points for multiplats on 360 now that the roles are reversed it doesn't matter?

Yeah, but now imagine that's part of your job, and the trip and console are paid for. Not really a fair analogy to compare it to someone being forced to fly 4 hours to pick up their pre-order. Jobs are a pain in the ass.

Thanks to the RAM expansion we could make the N64's resolution and framerate even better!

wow.................. Even though some of you guys views on games and off topics are out there I appreciate you gaffers for what you do. That didn't even take a whole day to dig...........

Someone should ask Adam whether he actually paid for the 'videogame' he is about to play, or was it provided for free by a publisher?

Why do people act like this is some sort of nail in the proverbial coffin of journalistic integrety? ALL MEDIA REVIEWERS GET THEIR SHIT FOR FREE. End of story. Movie critics are invited to early screenings. Music critics get early access to albums. Even most TV critics get sent episodes a week ahead of time if they have an intent to review it.

Reviews are at their most effective when they're timely, and it's in the publisher's interest for a game's reviews to hit before the game itself (to maximize hype). It doesn't make a lick of goddamn sense to expect them to pay, unless the publisher is trying to sneak a game onto shelves before reviews can hit.

Not after this video

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=88676240&postcount=678

Just 4 months ago he fully expected and thought that these consoles would run games at 1080/60fps.
I don't really see a problem. If anything, he's saying that graphics are going to be better on the xb1 and ps4. But that's not something to be impressed about. That's not that big of a deal. The big deal is going to be what the power difference between generations actually allows. Better AI, bigger worlds, more motion capture, more players. 720p vs 1080p is a large resolution difference objectively. But that's not what developers and gamers should be focusing on when moving to next gen.

And in a way I agree with him. I care a lot more about the player increase to 64 in bf4 than I do about the resolution increase. When the next fallout game comes out I'll be more impressed by better animations, larger environments, and less loading screens when going from indoor to outdoor than I'll be about resolutions. And when I play the witcher 3 next year, resolution will be the last thing on my mind.
