Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

I played what I assume was the E3 build at a Game lock-in event last month. I can relate to the above quote. The combat was quite repetitive, and I should imagine would get old quickly. The demo I played had you in an arena decided into areas where you went in, hacked and slashed through a number of enemies and then pull levers and manipulate objects to open up the next area - and repeat until the Arena was complete.

I hope the rest of the game doesn't carry on in the same way, otherwise I can't see it being received well when it lands.
Same demo I played.

It bored me to tears. I actually immediately restarted because I assumed I must have been missing something.

With my left hand completely off the controller, I was able to slice and dice through tons of enemies simply by inputting the same sequence ad nauseum.

To be fair, you can do the same thing in Batman - the game this combat is most often compared to.

Remember this is the frankenstein child of a kinect game, the gameplay shows it.

It does look nice visually besides animation.

Never in doubt honestly. After the QTE fest that was the reveal I didn't expect much from the game, but they kind of sorted it out recently showing more actual gameplay. Too bad the reality is that the actual gameplay is pretty much consistent of repeated animations and full of QTE itself so there wasn't really much to see there. Oh well, at least it looks good. lol

This game was designed for the original Kinect which was able to recognize a handful of simple gestures... when they pushed this game to next-gen the simply turned up the graphics and replaced the simple gestures with buttons presses.

You know I had a similar experience to this with Dragon Age 2.

I spammed X for so long during the intro sequence, I decided to go to the bathroom while spamming X on my controller. When I came back everything was dead and I had barely taken damage.

Always silly how people take one negative impression and use it to justify their preconceptions while ignoring positive previews.

Not nearly as silly as people making nonsensical Lair comparisons though.

Whether commanding rows of skilled soldiers or cutting a swath through barbarian fire-spinners, Ryse excels in giving Titus some real battle finesse, with a variety of animations that transition quite smoothly into a variety of killing techniques. Every motion is decidedly realistic, with Titus stabbing, punching, and shoving enemies with short, punctuated attacks.
It’s definitely engaging at the start, especially when figuring out the learning curve. But the more you watch it, the more you start getting used to the grisly assortment of brute-force, execution-style acrobatics.

However, that’s not a quirk of the animation or the visual style of the game. It’s the combo system.

Throughout 90 minutes of demo gameplay in locales like the capital of Rome and the center of Colosseum, I had dispatched of most enemies with the same technique — X, X, X, and Y.

Occasionally, an odd enemy forces you to break his guard with a shove of your shield, but for the most part, the combat relies on hammering the two main attack buttons until you pull the trigger on a finishing sequence. Those finishing sequences are fun to watch, but the challenge is minimal, with enemies flashing a telltale blue or yellow to signal which attack will extend your combo score. Failing to play along carries no penalty.

It’s combat that’s definitely more grounded in reality than Kratos’ gravity-defying Daffy Duck routine, but at the same time, a “grinding” flow and feeling to the gameplay almost sets in too early, especially for a short demo.

Sounds like he like it but some of the stuff sounds weird.

The animations from what I watch don't look good.

Not surprising. This always looked like one of those games that people will regret buying at launch and used copies will flood gamestop bargain bins in a year.

From what I remember of my Game Informer issues, they always try to make their previews positive, or at the very least, hopeful. For example if they're previewing a game with issues, they address them, but then immediately say they think said issues will be ironed out by release and that they look forward to the final build.

To hear a preview so blatantly scathing is a bit shocking to me, and certainly does not bode well for the game at all.

You have to wonder how it was humanly possible to have a game playing a Roman soldier hacking at other people with those amazing graphics suck. It should be a blast. What the hell went wrong?

Crytek

Xbox One's Knack. I shouldn't laugh because my stupid ass is buying Knack too.

This was apparent early on, was it not? QTE events, combat that looked entirely scripted, etc. Surely no one is surprised by this? IF I was picking up an Xbox One at launch I would not have given Ryse a second glance. DR/Forza are the only two exclusives that really matter.

Killer Instinct looks good too if you like fighters

Not sure on Crimson Dragon

But I think we can write off Ryse at this point to be honest

I get the feeling, Crytek were money hat into making this game for Xbox 360 Kinect. They got stuck because the original Kinect is shit, so they got told to make it for the Xbox One, they tried but the new Kinect was just as shitty, so they said "right we'll make this a controller game" and then spent the rest of the development time trying to salvage a shitty Kinect title into a proper game, Microsoft then saw it as an exclusive they then pushed as much media and money hatting as possible to get everyone pumped for the game.

Can't wait for them to unshackle themselves from this and start making the next "Crysis".

TL;DR Kinect doomed this game.

Is anyone surprised? The footage we have out there is nothing exciting. Graphics are all it really has going for it.

This sounds frighteningly accurate.

That's true, but Batman was also boring until the game started providing other means of attack. The challenge rooms showcased the combat mechanics well.

Ryse seems limited by comparison.

You have to wonder how it was humanly possible to have a game playing a Roman soldier hacking at other people with those amazing graphics suck. It should be a blast. What the hell went wrong?

You have to wonder why a game with bad gameplay is not good?

All the people who like Ryse are in IGN thread, and all the people who dislike Ryse are here. How about we combine the two threads?...

There you go. Shit looked dumb as hell from the beginning. That stupid Saving Private Ryan riff in that gameplay video was a dead giveaway.

Crytek has zero experience with 3rd person melee action games (right?) and that kind of combat is actually very hard to do well.

not surprised at all and I have said from the beginning the graphics aren't that great-IMO. Crytek has shown us they know what they are doing...but this?

Press B to skip the game.

Lol! It's lovely to have a pretty game, but it needs to have unbroken gameplay to back it up.

I thought it would at least fall into the Heavenly Sword category of enjoyability. I guess it's more of a Lair.

This is the key line for me:

"but at the same time, a “grinding” flow and feeling to the gameplay almost sets in too early, especially for a short demo."

Not going to be able to play this game for more than 10 minutes without getting bored of pressing XXXY or whatever combo he was using.

All the people who like Ryse are in IGN thread, and all the people who dislike Ryse are here. How about we combine the two threads?...

Do you want an ass-storm to break out? :p

Well that depends, are we talking about just pressing the buttons or actual dialing like those old phones?

Because those old phones were fun.
