Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

Damn, that's brutal. But whose phone number tho? I mean it could be a pretty intense experience depending on who you're calling and the topic of the conversation

If the game is as gorgeous as it seems, that alone can warrant a few hours of fun gameplay.

I greatly enjoy good art direction and graphics in games. Its really a pleasurable experience.

Eh I know what you mean but you really shouldn't say "gameplay"

More like

"If the game is as gorgeous as it seems, that alone can warrant a few hours of fun playing the game"

Semantics of course

It's funny because I just got done watching an interview with Phil Spencer telling everyone how great Ryse is.

I don't know if there is any truth to this rumor, but I once read that he secretly receives checks to say games on MS systems are good.

Seems like Ryse is exactly what it was designed to be...a Kinect showcase....pick up and play Kinect game with beautiful visuals. Only it's not Kinect any more but its still left with the easily accessible controls that hardcore gamers will shun for not being deep enough.

It's real bad.

Destuctoid: Battle system isn't QTEs, but still isn't great
First, let's clear the air. Ryse: Son of Rome is an action game. While early showings may have had gamers thinking that the gameplay centered around QTEs, the final version had me taking on hordes of invading warriors in an effort to help defend my city and my emperor.

Swinging a sword to engage any enemy feels like any hack-and-slash, though the hits feel slower and more deliberate. Slow bordering on clunky, really. Ryse kicks off with a combat tutorial that encourages blocking incoming attacks with a shield, and then returning with your own hits when the attacker has been properly deflected. It's not the deepest combat system, but it's effective and it feels decent.

Some of the spirit of QTEs live on in Ryse's finishing system, which ties cinematic kills with battle perks. Beat an enemy down enough and an icon will appear above its head, telling you to move in for a finisher. While you won't see button prompts in these slow-motion sequences, you will see faint colored auras around the enemy. Press the corresponding controller face buttons to match the colors in time, and you'll execute the finisher properly.
And that's Ryse's gameplay in a nutshell. As I worked my way through the first three levels I learned that basic combos can be executed, and that precisely-timed blocks can stun enemies. Add in blocking breaks and secondary weapon use (spears), and you have combat that is quite a bit more interesting than an endless string of QTEs.

My problem with Ryse is that the battle system is not fully matched to the wave-based hack-and-slash gameplay. It's a swing and a miss, if you will. As elements of the combat system are introduced, it's fun to try them out and eventually implement them, but the fun only lasts for so long.
My main problem is that there is really one way to engage an enemy (run up and slash at them), and really only one way to finish them off. To be clear, the finishing sequence is not optional. You can choose not to press the prompted buttons, but if you engage the enemy at all when they have the finisher icon above their head, you'll be thrown into slow-mo time.

What's strange is that, even if you skip pressing buttons, the slow-motion hit sequence continues to play out. You won't get your perk charge from the kill, but you're still forced to watch it. Imagine watching these slow-mo kills 50 times in a row.

To be fair to Crytek, I think MS fucked Ryse up when they decided to make the game a core release instead of Kinect based. Crytek were far into development on Ryse as a Kinect game when they got the call to change focus.

As I've said before, I do want a sequel built from the ground up as an action game.

After I saw the IGN-video I can understand this. Combat really looks boring imo.
But graphically it's nice and that's good for MS, so they have something to show at launch.

Dialing a phone is more exciting because mis-dials can lead to unexpectedly amusing results sometimes.

Yep, that's about what I expected but I am surprised that its coming from Game Informer. They are usually pretty positive about most games. Maybe Ryse is actually that bad.

With all due respect, I'm not sure Cryteck is the best way to go for enticing gameplay mechanics. They did really well on the first Crysis, but it's been downhill since then. Imo, of course.

to be fair... I thiiiiink you can handle most battles in ass creed and batman without the left hand.

probably easier in ac... sounds like a fun challenge for batman.

this makes Dynasty Warriors games sound groundbreaking

basically this.....from the sounds of it Dynasty Warriors with all its iterations comes out on top.

Which is fine by me because I love Dynasty Warriors. But Ryse was my game besides Titanfall for near future when April rolled around next year.

Guess I won't even touch an X1 if I can just skip Ryse now and play Titanfall on my PC.

shallow, boring and beautiful sounds like a crytek game...oh wait it is. on a serious note there is nothing surprising about the criticism this game gets, it began with the mixed previews at E3 and gamescom and it's by developed by crytek, the guys who only know how to make pretty games and nothing else.

Can't wait to buy it for myself and try, I know some games here on gaf get praised and i absolutely hated them so i've learn the lesson of try it myself to see if the suckage is massive.

They speak so boldly about the lack of depths in the combat mechanics. Yet, give em something more intricate and rewarding - like The Wonderful 101 - and they don't even invest the time to grasp that.

Not necessarily defending Ryse(it had always looked too simplistic for my taste), but if reviewers are this vocal about poor mechanics in some games, they should at least give themselves more time to exploit the deeper mechanics found in others. Consistency is important for reviewers.

I don't know. When I was a child there was a phone number you could dial from the library where it would run you through a little choose your own adventure story. That was pretty fun. Could be a compliment, right?

Conversely they keep telling me KI is really surprising in a good way

That's good news. The Escapist seems to like Ryse as well. I guess it'll be mixed with this game. Some gameplay first types may find it boring and the the people who see it as a popcorn film may like it.

Given how bad Crysis 3 was, people should have lowered their expectations accordingly.

KKRT00 is probably crying in his mom's basement right now.
