12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Looks pretty good. This is what microsoft should be using to sell consoles. Its a shame they couldn't put out a live demo like this earlier, but I assume it probably wasn't finished.

Here are the screenshots from when Forza is paused and when it is unpaused:

So either it doesn't pause quickly or it's actually faked footage.

This looks amazing. So smooth and I love the way you can customize the home screen - definitely much better than the 360 at this point.

Also, I have to wonder how Microsoft is going to handle the task of getting non-GAF'ers to actually hook up their cable boxes to their consoles--seems like a huge up-hill battle, albeit an important one.
I'm pretty sure there will be big inserts included with the boxed hardware using equally large diagrams and simple instructions showing the cable/satellite box HDMI lead into the HDMI-in port. Pretty simple. If there's nothing plugged in, I'm sure they can pop event windows to remind people that they can do that, as well.

Dragonsworne, what's the point of your scrutiny over a demo using prerecorded video when the system will be out in the wild in under two weeks for anyone to use and see for themselves? Video is video as far as switching out another feed coming from the HDMI-in. Whether it's live or not shouldn't matter to the hardware or software outside of OneGuide programming.

The UI is so fluid it is amazing. Kinect actually seems to have a great use. Now I want these or similar voice commands on my PS4.
:-(

One key takeaway tho....don't expect SNAP! at launch. Why do I say that? Well if snap was working, it would have made more sense to use the function with the Skype portion of the demo. What's the sense of having Skype, Snap & TV if you can't use them as they were designed. Leaving TV to go to dedicated app kills the who selling point of having skype and TV on the console. So prepare for the announcement.

Yes and no. If I'm in a game and I want to chat with a friend then I want to snap skype. If I'm with my family and we want to talk to grandpa then I want snap to be on top of everything. Also, how else would you show the widescreen Skype feature? It would be dumb to talk about it while it's snapped.

You can multi task on ps4 as well, i dont know how it would be a big step up. Snap and ?.

Its more how everything comes together so gracefully. Its damn smart. Kinect being the center of the experience is unlike other UI we've seen so far. Multi signin, switching, tracking... and it does all the hard work, you do barely anything apart from speaking to it.

When he comes back the game is paused, which he didn't do before task switching. The Xbox must have paused the game after switching letting him roll into the turn. That's why he's about to go off track when resuming.

So the whole thing is fake? Damn, I wonder if the OS even has metro tiles at this state, might be floating bubbles even.

I think this explanation makes the most sense, considering they are still in the same general area of the track. If they were in radically different track positions, this would be more fishy. Although, it is odd that he is at a faster speed when unpausing...

I really have no desire for any of the features they showed above and beyond gaming, so I pretty much see the extra effort to design this unless for me personally - but I do have to say that this was a great way of showing it off, and it does seem pretty smooth. I have to wonder - why didn't they just show off the features / ideas like this initially. If they would have done this awhile back - it would have greatly helped their cause and really excited people interested in these additional types of features.

Nicely done Microsoft.

man some of you guys are brutal lol, fake fake fake everythings fake, that girls boobs...fake, that guys teeth....fake......

He doesn't seem to be in the same area of the track either. I guess the real judge will be real world uncontrolled footage then.

it's the same part of the track just up the road. it obviously didn't pause immediately, hence why he is missing the turn when he resumes

also probably why he never goes fast, but hardly faked

Interesting ...anyone notice the track layout bottom left? They seem to be different but this could be me Im not a big racing fan :)

it's just rotated from turning. you guys are looking for something that isn't there

First screen is taken a second too soon, notice where he is at 3.26 and compare that to 3.41. Seems to be the same area of track.

Or I might be wrong.

The ability to suspend gaming right where you want, go do something else and snap back to the game at that exact moment IS next gen.

Oh c'mon guys. They probably just fumbled a line and had to do another take.

Pretty much this.

There are lots of cuts (pretty much any time they are transitioning from talking head view to couch view) but the transitions from game/app/dashboard are pretty responsive.

That being said, MS has taken so much heat lately people won't accept anything but unedited footage; for better or worse.

@ about the 4:40 mark in the video, the guy grabs the remote to turn down the TV volume. I thought Kinect was supposed to communicate with my TV, Receiver, etc.? Is my memory incorrect on this issue?

Sorry if this has been covered earlier in the thread. Thanks.

Really impressive, its a shame they couldn't show this off earlier as this video really helps them get their vision across.

Again. He actually comes back in at 3:39 where the speedometer is 15. I don't know about the track stuff though. Maybe the Xbox continues your last input until it recognizes it needs to pause.

Really? It's not that different from their pre-E3 reveal, where they showed that fake OS demo on-stage. This is simply an actual materialisation of that promise, ready to release in 2 weeks.

I'm actually kind of surprised so many were blown away. It is extremely impressive, but we were shown this demo months ago, only this time it's actually real.

This is absolutely absurd. So the expectations of everyone on here are that they needed to do this all in one take?

There is a serious difference between faking all of the stuff happening on screen and having to do a retake.

People on here really need to quit their complaining over this stuff. The tinfoil hat brigade really need to take a look in the mirror.

If this is representative of real world use, it's very impressive.

I'm still curious as to how all of this is going to work with so many cable providers in the US. Can't even imagine EU lol.

UGHHHH - so much " XBOX"'ing

really distasteful.

at least let me vary commands for the same function or record my own commands.

at the minimum I should be able to say "xbox go to netflix" AND "go to netflix xbox".

i mean the concept for the dash is nice in theory...but it just isn't a game console anymore.

i just want to press a freaking button to start my game.

whats the point of using your voice when you're holding a controller anyways. same goes for using your hand gesture to unpause the game...YOU'RE HOLDING A CONTROLLER STILL - just press a button god damnit.

i've also come to terms that i really don't like yusuf.

Thats the difference, its real. People are so used to companies saying "this is what we are going for" and then jsut not delivering on that promise. now we have seen the xbox one do this for real its awesome because they achieved what they said they were going to.

Looked really good... The fact that the X1 can play the same multiplatform games
lower resolution
as the PS4 AND do all of this stuff is awesome.

Really looking forward to trying this...

Annnnddddd here it comes....The inevitable bad Microsoft news stories that follow after every positive piece of X1 news on Gaf.
