12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Glad you like the video and we finally got one out there. Sorry - my life as been planes, demos, and sleep, so not much time to post.

I've been doing this exact demo for a few weeks. It all works and the coverage you're seeing today I think backs that up.

Any anomalies can likely be chalked up to the guys having to do more than one take. I was talking to Marc last night and he was saying that the tech was working perfect, it was more that he was flubbing lines. We're not actors as you can see :)

Enjoy the video and the coverage today! I'll be posting lightly over the next few weeks just due to travel. Can't wait for people to try themselves.

honestly this UI / Feature sets if work (and it should at this point) as in the video is really really impressive ..good job

If that was indeed a proper demo with no post editing shenanigans then color me impressed. I have a PS4 on pre order and I don't plan on changing that but that UI demo should have been released MONTHS ago....

Well, technically, they did show it months ago. It's very similar to the infamous May reveal presentation, and even it's still not sure if that one was real or staged, it was still very representative of the final product.

Yup. You can see where MS was going with the all-digital plan too. You could jump to every game on your HD while on TV. Or while playing one game, you could get an invite to another and join right away. Physical copies destroys that ability.

This is probably a minority opinion here, but Xbox One became less appealing when they did the 180s. I'm not going next-gen for a while, I would have liked to see competing philosophies in action before making a decision.

I agree, I'm part of that minority too. It's still possible to get some of those all-digital features by.. well, going all digital, although the original system had its benefits (there are many offers and discounts on physical discs that I'm forcing myself to ignore because to be full digital I now need to buy everything from the MS store :/ )

People that are impressed by this never talked to their Xbox 360 before. :) It's cool and dashboard looks smooth, but I had huge issues with my 360 picking up any background noise, and I don't think there's technology that can easily fix it...

Really did enjoy the video and it looks much better than I thought it would - in fact of all the things so far this demo has sold me the most..

Soon as a get a new job (talk about the wrong time of year to loose one :(), I recon I'll be saving to pick one of these up.

They got a incoming call during the record game edit, at 7:38, but they didn't have a notification pop up? This was after the Skype call.

I think that notification stuff is like a history, they had the call first so that is the previous notification there, not a current incoming call in progress.

I think.

If they did more stuff before heading to that part of the guide we would have seen more old notifications i'm sure.

Fantastic, much appreciated, seriously blown away with the simplicity and ease of navigating and executing tasks. Havent seen any UI has match this, Well done!

That looked absolutely incredible. They definitely win in the interface department.

Still, I can't help but feel the controller is faster in some applications, like instead of saying "Xbox play Forza Motorsport 5" you could just click the A button...

True, but if you are not sitting on the icon for forza 5, instead of using the dpad or stick to find the icon for the game, saying "play forza 5" would be pretty slick. I do like how it recognizes profiles based on voice. This will be handy for me and my fiancée as we both have different tastes on tv shows etc,

I doubt seriously that this is faked. I mean, if that was the intention, the portion where it was rendering the captured footage would of been instant and you can see some stuff could be faster as they optimize it. I am sure they had some retakes like any captured footage of this nature, but it looks like that is how the OS runs and I think it is pretty fantastic.

I liked the part where one guy said he was sticking with corporate green or something like that....then the look on Marc's face since his stuff is Sony Blue! that was kind of funny.

I'm not impressed by the voice commands. I'm impressed by the seamless transitions, multi-tasking, responsiveness, video sharing/skype, and the personalized TV/video App options.

Thanks for the post Albert. It's looking amazing. Cannot wait for day1.

Nice demo. Not quite "just as fast" as they claimed, but still very good. I still think voice navigation feels awkward though. I never use Siri for example because I don't like barking orders at it.

Wow, I can't believe I actually want Kinect. Microsoft, how dare you put subliminal messages in your videos. Changing my mind, and all that.

No, but seriously. All it took was the right presentation to make me see that I actually would love these features. Thankfully, the games are there. All of this extra is just icing that makes the console unique, and I see that now because I choose to have an open mind away from all of the hatred and mud-slinging that I have even participated in myself.

Does this look like an actual demonstration of the real OS? Or is it doctored again (sped up text input, game switching to previously released trailers, etc)?

Looks real. You can see some things pop up on the sides of the screen at one point when the guy is talking with his hands. ;)

Just watched the GB Xbox impression video they put up today, they said the UI stuff worked well too, so I guess there is no trickery or something.

Oh, OK. That actually makes a lot more sense. I just don't use skype on TV and don't watch TV at all so it didn't resonate with me. The only switching that would impress me would be from Netflix to a game. I'm sure that's possible, but it wasn't in the video :)

Any reason why the big snap feature wasn't shown in all of 12 minutes ?

Good catch. I guess I was too involved in checking this out that I forgot about the snap feature. Perhaps that is part of the OS that they are still having challenges with, but then again, this 12 minute video did not cover every single feature that it is capable of doing, so that can be part of the reason we did not see Snap as well.

Yup, I wish they gave us a way to opt in to the original plan they had for Xbone. At least give us the choice.

My sarcasm meter is not working when I read this post. I mean, it wreaks of sarcasm but I simply can't be 100%.

30 seconds, I think. During the editing part, I saw a "21s" value appearing, I suppose it was the remaining time when they stopped adding their comments.

So the most footage you can record is 30 seconds? Or is there a way to record an entire game session?

This looks fantastic. Good job MS.

Personally, I'm not keen on talking to my TV most of the time however. I also don't have cable and I don't really love the idea of a camera in my living room.

However, I realize that all of those are minority opinions and a lot of people will enjoy these features.

This is basically why I am going all digital with the X1, outside of those Day 1 game editions that I couldn't resist.

we sort of do. All digital baby!!

Not with those game file sizes, it would take me days to download 50gb on my crappy DSL. The original OS would allow me to buy the physical copy, install it in minutes, then never touch the disc again. Can't do that anymore.

Again...to those wondering about i this was faked...you guys do realize a large number of reporters were there right?

Here's joystiq impression of the demo
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/11/08/xbox-one-dashboard-impressions-finding-forza-5/#continued

I think it is just too hard for some to finally give in and say something positive for a change. In their mind, it just has to be a train wreck, no matter what.

Me? I am more than happy to admit some of my venom against these features were wrong. I'm not going to lie to myself and say that this is not impressive or that I would have no use for any of this. It's actually pretty damn slick to have all of this working seamlessly and I would love to have something like this in my house.

This should have been MS's E3 presentation. It does make a case for the pricepoint on Kinect. Sure still not game related, but that was cool as shit.

Video is impressive. No cheese anywhere. Just very down to earth. This video together with the "Invitation" video shows that you're starting to get your grip on good PR again.

This OS was the most exciting looking thing at the reveal, and I'm happy to see it delivering.

Hey, Albert...any reason Snap wasn't included in this demo?

The OS really looks very impressive.

Making me want to keep my pre-order. Can you comment on which television providers will be supported at launch?

Everything I was hoping it could be when they first announced it.

I also will not use all of the features but having so many options for different folks/strokes is what it's all about.

I mostly will use voice commands from and to deeper menus and the tv in (US DirecTV) and hopefully dvr controls?

Also Bing and browsing now on my tv snapped to tv programs may supersede my tablet or phone at times honestly especially if I can voice search Bing for info on web at drop of a hat.

Need to see how it works at home but really loving what I, seeing so far... oh yea and it plays Forza 5 day 1. :)

5 minutes is the limit

To the best of my knowledge, if you want to record something on the fly, you have the last 5 minutes to play with when you say 'record that'. I'm fairly certain that limit goes up significantly when you choose to record a game session in advance.

Video is impressive. No cheese anywhere. Just very down to earth. This video together with the "Invitation" video shows that you're starting to get your grip on good PR again.
Yeah, that has to be one of the least "corporate" presentations MS has done. And it worked great and without the forced "cheese" you sometimes see.

I'm still pissed about losing the fast game switching without discs, and some of those other features. :(

Joystiq saw snap in action.

The 30s seconds limit is only for the "quick record" through kinect. There were talks about the standard recording duration to be around 5 minutes, but I think you need to start it manually from the DVR. Not sure about that, though.
